Stayed seven nights in a beach front villa in September. Couple in mid 40's.
Transport: The hotels' fleet of X5 are shiny and new. The driver was waiting at the airport gate and the car cooled with free WiFi and drinks ready for the 30-40min drive to the hotel. The hotel is nearer to Hoi An than it it to Da Nang.
Rooms:The "10" and "20" numbered villas are closest to the water. The resort is built in a series of "U" shapes and some villas, while technically on the sand, can be a fair way from the water itself. The series of private pool villas up the level of luxury if you wish to be secluded.
It is a typical GHM Hotels property. Beautifully planned and built. The gardens are verdant and lush. Photo's really do not do the place justice.
Staff: The main restaurant manager Ms Ai is a standout lady - friendly and warm. So to the other staff members - and the (relatively new) F&B manager was always at hand.
The house keeping staff were discrete and efficient. Rooms and belonging carefully cleaned. Laundry service efficient, accurate and relatively cheap. Well worth using.
The concierge team members where also great providing accurate recommendations for the sourcing of a marble sculpture from a local reputable suppler who carved more contemporary style works than the other producers. Our sculpture was shipped back home and arrived in pristine condition three weeks later.
The concierge team also arranged a day tour to Hue using the hotel's BMW X5. A comfortable ride for a long day trip to and from Hue. It was not cheap - but you pay for what you get - a new X5 and a driver to yourself for about 8-9 hours so it is was well worth the price. Worth a day doing this to see the UNESCO listed imperial city.
Finally the team also arranged a two night cruise in Halong Bay using the Au Co Line and it was all handled efficiently and promptly.
The Spa: It was tranquil and peaceful. The massages/treatments performed with competence and skill.
Food: As we stayed seven nights we really got to know the menus at the various restaurants and bars.
Breakfast. Good selection of western and local foods including Pho ( "Fur"" a soup of either chicken or beef). Champagne either on its own or in cocktails included in the buffet was a nice touch. The ginger/passionfruit/lime juice mix was awesome.
The standard of food was exemplary - in not many places could you be treated to a comparison freshly flown in french oysters up against those from local farms at Na Trang ( the local oysters were in fact sightly better) on a complimentary basis at the bar one evening. Prime fillet beef from Australia cooked precisely to order topped with fois gras was succulent and with good grass fed beef taste .
The out door Vietnamese restaurant for lunch and dinner also great - it getting an over haul and all dressed up for the dinner service. An eggplant hot pot was terrific and so was the sauteed local mixed mushrooms. In fact the quality and taste of the vegetable dishes was great - even for a committed meat eater.
Pool service: The snack of grilled local calamari marinated in fish sauce and palm sugar was a stand out. The Pool side team are polite, friendly and unobtrusive. Complementary sun screen and cool bottles of water were a nice touch.
Wine: An extensive list that is not cheap by any standard, but you have to remember that you are on a beach in the middle of Vietnam tens of thousands of miles away from France/Australia/NZ. Wine is a luxury in these parts and costs good money to get flown in. On par with prices in a very good resort in Thailand and not out of kilter when compared to a good restaurant in Sydney, HK or Singapore.
Gym: At the entrance to the resort. All new gear and great design for the his/hers change rooms leading to the gym. Two tennis courts (hard court) and a basket ball hoop area . They have a team member that you can hit with on the tennis court when your better/other half decides the spa is a better option than running around a tennis court.
Outside the resort: Hoi An: A relatively short taxi ride (US$7) to Hoi An (about 15 -20 mins). The hotel does a shuttle bus but the taxi is far more convenient. Why skimp on a few dollars on transport when you are staying in a place like this. A lovely ""old town" with plenty of options for shopping and eating. Certainly cheaper if you want to catch a taxi into the town and have a meal there. Morning Glory Restaurant was recommended by the hotel and was spot on. The "White Marble Restaurant and Wine Bar" was an awesome place to spend a lazy afternoon watching the local world go by .
Overall, a beautiful resort with in an idyllic location. It is a credit to the manager Mr Hess and GHM generally, to run a great hotel in what is a fairly remote area of Vietnam.
