“No Other Hotel Comes Close”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

I have stayed in some of the finest hotels in the World. Nothing comes close to the experience we had at the Nam Hai. We arrived at Da Nang Airport on a hot day and were met by a private transfer to the resort. Ice cold lemon grass infused face towels and water were a nice touch. Not quite as nice as the greeting when we arrived at the hotel. We were met at our transfer vehicle by the General Manager and about a dozen staff, including our butler. Can anyone say 'Fantasy Island'? We were immediately transferred to golf carts which whisked us off to our three bedroom villa complex. When I say three bedrooms I mean three separate villas within private grounds AND a separate building which was our living room. All set off nicely by a large pool in our garden. Our butler set about telling us what was included in the cost of our villas. Pretty much everything... Massages, breakfast, afternoon tea and canapés in the villa, full bar (decanters topped up every day and a fridge full of other drinks). On top of that, your butler is your PA for the duration of your stay. Ours brought extra drinks and non-stop ice every day and, when we decided to cancel the rest of our trip to stay longer at the Nam Hai (it was that good) he took our paperwork, cancelled our other trip with full refunds at less than 24 hrs notice and rebooked our flights. The night we were due to leave (the first time) one of the managers came to see us in the villa to sincerely ask for tips on improving the service. We made a throwaway comment that it could be a little lighter outside the villas at night as we liked to stay outside and read/play cards. Honestly, it was a throwaway in an overwhelming, gushing report of how great the hotel was. The next afternoon, after we'd decided to stay on, we were sitting outside when four workmen arrived to string extra lights outside the villas and our butler placed candles on the steps leading up to the central villa.

Four of us went to the Nam for a 40th birthday celebration. My partner cried when we walked into the villas for the first time. Thinking about our trip now makes me feel the same way. It was absolutely perfect and has ruined us all for anywhere else. Take a look at their website. Unusually, the pictures do not do this place justice.

Now, if you could all just stay away and leave this place to us, that would be great!

Room Tip: Go for a pool villa. You won't regret it.

We had high expectations of the Nam Hai having stayed at other GHM hotels (the Chedi in Oman in 2006 and the Datai - then under GHM - in 2007). We booked a one bedroom pool villa for 12 nights to relax and re-charge our batteries. After a bit of a false start on our arrival when we found that the hotel had lost our booking, we quickly settled down and let the Nam Hai serenity and calmness wash away our stresses. We loved our villa (we ended up being given a 2 bedroom villa which gave us a bigger pool and more outside space) mainly because of the lovely outside space and private pool with great views down to the beach. While it's possible to see people in other villa gardens, they are sufficiently far away that it isn't at all intrusive.

The whole of the Nam Hai property and its grounds are kept in pristine condition and it all looks absolutely beautiful. There is an army of staff - all of whom seemed to be very hard working and trying hard to please.

We had lunch and dinner in the hotel (the main restaurant, the beach restaurant and romantic candlelit dinners on our terrace courtesy of room service) every day apart from one night when we went to the Cargo Club in Hoi An (where we thought the food was no more than average). We very much enjoyed all of the food in the hotel (yes it's expensive but it's good!) but agree with a previous reviewer that daily specials would help provide more variety for those guests on longer stays.

There were a few things we felt could be improved:

We didn't like the room layout which, while 'stylish', we found impractical for reasons other reviewers have given.

We struggled a bit with the butler concept. Our butler was very sweet but we think it would be helpful if it was made clear at the start what guests should expect from the service and between what hours. Of course it's possible to have that kind of discussion direct with the butler but we had come to the Nam Hai to have a break from 'managing staff' so didn't really want that kind of conversation. If we come again, we will probably opt not to have a butler.

Perhaps because we were there during the low season when the hotel was not that busy, we sometimes found the staff to be a little too keen. At dinner there were times when we found our conversations constantly interrupted by staff asking if everything was ok. This was irritating although obviously done with the best of intentions.

While the public outside spaces were in superb order, our villa lawn resembled more of a meadow by the time we left (and was also covered in debris from the trees, which I picked up myself). We guessed that the policy is not to mow the lawns or do other garden work while villas are occupied but that maybe needs rethinking when people are on longer stays.

Overall, while there were things we felt could be improved, we had an absolutely wonderful stay and we were very sad to leave. If only the Nam Hai were not so far away, we would return in the blink of an eye!

Thank you very much for your recent visit and for posting a review. Allow me to add my apologies to the ones extended upon check in when we were not in possession of your booking due to a breakdown of communication between the travel professional and the resort. We were glad to read that you nevertheless settled in quickly and enjoyed the upgrade to a two bedroom pool villa, featuring a large pool as well as a more spacious garden.

At time of writing this reply, our Executive Chef and his team are working on launching a concept of daily specials in both restaurants in order to provide more variety for long stay guests such as yourselves.

We appreciate your feedback about the butler and the staff in general. We will conduct further training and assist our team in finding the right balance of being there for guests and when to move into the background to ensure privacy.

In terms of gardening, we will fine tune the current approach to ensure maintenance continues to take place whilst guests are in residence, seeking the right timing whenever guests are out and about.

Once more, thank you very much for your loyalty towards GHM properties and your long visit. We would be delighted to have the opportunity to welcome you back for another stay at The Nam Hai in the foreseeable future. Walter Hess, Resident Manager.

We had an enjoyable stay at the Nam Hai.
The staff go out of the way to make sure that guests are well taken care of. Huge choices for breakfast. The room was nice and the view was stunning. The shuttle bus to Hoian was on time and very practical. Hoian was a great town, there are so many great restaurants. We loved our stay here.

This resort is absolutely amazing! Right from the time you come up the driveway you know it is a special place. The staff are excellent and the service is first class. The rooms are very spacious and well appointed and beautifully furnished and decorated. The food in all of the restaurants is beautifully presented and an absolute delight to eat! We would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone wanting a 5 star holiday in a beautiful setting!

We stayed here over the long weekend in May. The experience was by far one of the best if not the best experience I have ever had at a luxury resort. All the elements were there:

1. Service: All the staff were cheerful, courteous and remembered who we were, where we went, even our names. I went to the spa for a treatment and the driver who drove me back to the villa remembered me several days later and asked after my experience. On the day of our check-out, one of the staff came to ask us if we were satisfied with our stay and mentioned that the hotel has a program for returning guests.. All F&B and pool service were prompt, friendly, helpful and delightful.

There is a free hotel shuttle 4 times a day from the hotel to Hoi An.

2. Property: located 10 min from Hoi An village, on a serene beach that is not overrun by people. The design of the villas is unique and wonderful to the eye, with indoor and outdoor showers, a bathtub in the middle of the villa. The overall, the property is beautiful, with attention to the smallest detail.

3. Food: the breakfast spread is excellent, with Western and local fare. The pool and lunch menu is varied and offers a mix of salads, local and international choices.

The only thing I would ask for the hotel to change would be to up the quality and authenticity of their local Vietnamese dishes (on their lunch and pool menu) to match the quality of their non-Vietnamese food. The Banh Mi can be more like the authentic Hoi An style Banh Mi. The same can apply to their Banh Xeo, Bun Bo, and other local dishes.

For a luxury hotel like the Nam Hai, the very high prices for these staple local fare might be more justifiable if the quality was higher.

In sum, a highly recommended hotel for couples and small groups of adult friends. The hotel had and still has the Stay 3 Pay 2 nights offer, which is a wonderful for a long weekend. I will be coming back to this hotel soon.

Thank you very much for your recent visit and for taking the time to compose a review about your experiences at The Nam Hai. We were particularly happy to learn that it was our staff who made a lasting impression on you by consistently remembering your name, inquiring about your experience at the spa to mention but a few thoughtful touches. Your feedback about the local fare in The Beach Restaurant is taken to heart and we will assess on how we could render each dish more authentic and essentially more “Vietnamese”. We appreciate you having stayed with us and for recommending The Nam Hai to family and friends of yours. We hope to see you soon again. Walter Hess, Resident Manager.

Have stayed in some nice places, but this takes the cake. Spent 3 nights in an ocean villa, which was about 100 metres from water's edge, very nice room with everything you need. The resort also has a lap pool, an Olympic pool (NO KIDS ALLOWED), and another pool which was available for kids. Everything was always quiet and serene!! Then we spent next 3 nights in an ocean view pool villa, complete with butler dedicated to your every need, This was also only about 100m from water's edge, but here we had our own pool, about 15m long, a separate lounge/dining room, and our butler stayed in the rear room, which housed the kitchen, used for afternoon tea, and later in the day, canapés, all served by our pool. The mini bar was pretty much all inclusive as well. No need to go anywhere if you wanted a real holiday, this place has the lot. The restaurants in the resort were very nice, with a good variety of food, but you can't go past Vietnamese food while you are here. My only slight disappointment was that the pool water in all the pools was quite warm, but it was about 36c to 38c every day. The staff were exceptional, from our butler Thoa, up to Anthony the GM, and everyone in between. This place is worth a look. as they say, quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten!!

Room Tip: our pool villa was close to the beach, south of the main complex, but facing north. great for sun a...

We stayed here for seven nights in May. The villa was huge and our butler (Duy) was very nice and extremely helpful-he organised any request. The butler service is really probably only from 9 AM till around six or 7 PM, which is probably about all that is needed. The evening canapés probably weren't up to 6 star standard and really didn't appeal. Anybody with a physical disability would properly find it quite difficult to get in and out of the bed as it is in the middle of a raised platform so you have to slide across the platform to get into the bed. All the staff were helpful and there was nothing really that we could fault. Breakfasts were great with a huge selection of fresh fruits, pastries and everything that you would expect to find in a top-class resort. Unfortunately we finished up with some stomach problems from outside the resort but Duy organised a visit from the hotel nursing staff and some medication and we were back on track in a couple of days. The facilities in the Villas were great and the Internet connection could not be faulted.Having the luxury of your own private huge pool and being able to walk down onto the beach was certainly a nice experience
