We met Antonis and his cousin George watching the sunset in Mykonos. We told them we were travleing to Santorini. Antonis said that he owned a restaurant and we should come for dinner. We chatted with other travelers we just met and agreed to meet at Aegialos 3 nights later for dinner. OMG - the combination of food, wine, and people made this a night to remember.
Aegialos is off the beaten path but the cab drivers know where it is. The hotel concierge said it was one of the best restaurants on Santorini and he was right.
Three pairs of travelers (from Boston, Chicago, and Atlanta) met at 8pm on Sunday evening on Fira Beach. Antonis greeted us warmly and we settled into the iconic "boat" settee covered with a canopy: Very romantic on a secluded beach. The food and the wine never stopped. we started with fava beans (think hummus) and other vegtable and cheese dips that were so tasty. We had roasted eggplant and squash from his grandmother's garden. Words don't do justice to the grilled squid stuffed with cheese that I ate. Others had a variety of fresh fish that were equally as delectable.
We all agreed after several hours of food and drink that it was one of the best meals we ever had. And here's the kicker: It was one of the least expensive meals we had on the entire trip.
