“Overpriced, but good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2012

My boyfriend and I drove late into Playa Hermosa to stay here, as he had been here years ago on a surf trip. We saw signs for a "special walk-in discount" rate and we went to check them out. We had a guidebook with us that gave us an accurate price range of what we were expecting and they quoted us way over that. Not a good start, but we figured we'd stay the night and find a new place in the morning.

AC worked great in the room. However, we discovered that the shower upstairs somehow flooded our shower with dirty sand and bathwater. The TV in our room went out after a storm and a day or two later, hadn't been fixed. The curtains didn't close all the way and the beds were uncomfortable. Also, no fridges in some of the rooms so you can't store cold food and beer. A can of beer at the bar was sold for about the price of a six-pack. No joke. That was the final straw and we left for a place down the road.

That said, the restaurant staff were awesome and the food made in the kitchen was great. The food (other than the beer) was adequately priced. Also, the pool looked really nice, though we didn't swim in it. I saw a fitness center advertised, but never saw it.

This was once a much better hotel, but the rooms are now a let down. It just needs a little updating - including new pillows (currently lumpy) and new sheets (currently 'bobbly') - and the whole experience would improve.

Our party of 5, checked in for one night. We were given the $ 220/night "apartment" with two rooms, jacuzzi, kitchen, etc.
refrigerator, oven and microwave were not plugged in and stank. There was no reading lamp. The jacuzzi was broken. The water went off in the whole hotel. The pool was murky. it was the worst hotel we have ever stayed in in 6 years of traveling costa rica. We understand basic level. This was below because it was so run down.

Room Tip: Never stay here. Promising view, good beach, nice bartender and breakfast. Horrible accommodations...

Playa Hermosa in Puntarenas is just south of Jaco. We spent six nights in this hotel and the staff and hotel deserve a great rating. It has a few frills, but really it's your basic hotel with location, location, location. The most redeeming quality outside of that is the truly warm, hospitable staff. I can't give you the depth this deserves. China (say chee-na) is the manager and takes great care of the rooms--this woman mops like a demon possessed! Those rooms are spotless everyday, and gettting black sand from the beach off those white tiled floors cant be easy. My husband spoke enough Spanish that we could converse with her and get to communicate daily. A little goes a long way. Esteban speaks great English and will willingly help set up any tours you want nearby, such as the Chiclets tree canopy zip line tour--a total blast. Sammy will do the same. A taxi into Jaco is a mere 3500 colones, and trust us that staying at Fuego is a much better option than Jaco. The charming hacienda/ranchera two stories of this white stucco and mission tile-roofed place feels authentic. Polished, no. Adequate? aboslutely. The onsite bar and restaurant is all you need if you don't feel like venturing off site. Breakfast is hearty and fresh--opt for the Tipico, included in the room, in which you get eggs, gallo pinto (rice n beans), and toast (for which they willingly subbed out corn tortillas for this gluten free traveler) with fresh juice and coffee. Tomas (Alberto Tomas) has set the bar for making the best pina coladas on earth (none other in Costa Rica were as delicious as his!), Geiner playing reggaeton on the radio during his bar shift was telling of his youth and I appreciated the music. Great people, the room had a safe and a/c, and TV. I don't understand why guests don't use a SAFE...that is just common sense. They offer it, just use it!

The pool was also not bad for light laps. It's not nearly the length, but it'll get the job done. The beach currents are not swimmer conducive.

If you're a typical American looking for your the Marriott or Hilton do yourself a favor and book a room at Los Suenos. However if you're here to appreciate simplicity and the beauty of this country, Fuego is for you. We have been traveling back and forth to Hermosa for over 7 years, and have always went back to Fuego. The staff treats you like family and welcomes your group with open arms. Yes the rooms could use an upgrade or two and the restaurant is a little sub par but where else can you pay so little and surf right in your own backyard. As for the security, you're in Costa Rica, hide your valuables and be smart...that's the country, not the hotel.

If you're looking for a resort to lay on the beach and relax at again, go to Los Suenos. Fuego is for those wanting to spend their days exploring Manuel Antonio or surfing out back then spending your evenings with a cocktail in the hammock. Costa Rica is about simplicity, Pura Vida...if you want more then don't stay here but I plan on going back time and time again.

I completely agree with the review titled "very disappointed." The rooms are outdated and a bit rundown, the "grounds" are poorly kept, the few beach chairs they have are broken and the beach is not nice. It makes for a very depressing overall experience and definitely not worth the price. We had thought it would be better to stay outside of Jaco but being isolated is only nice if the place is pleasant – this isn't that place. We had planned to stay for 3 nights but left after the first night and switched to a nicer hotel (Cocal Hotel in Jaco) that only cost $14 more per night. Also, the management was great about responding to me when I was making reservations and they were charging me in advance for the room, but once I started contacting them to see if they would be willing to refund any part of the charges for the 2 nights we did not use the room, the management was unresponsive. You can find something better.
