“2003 to 2013 - A Review of Thornley House”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

We have been visiting Thornley House, for weekly breaks, for over a period of ten years. We look on ourselves as being friends as well as guests of Eileen and Shirley.

We have only ever used the en suite accommodation that provides; two single beds that give us a good nights sleep. Also provided is a shower and toilet, a TV and coffee/tea making facilities. We like this room and always request it when making a booking.

From the room there is the opportunity, in the spring, to be entertained by the antics of the latest crop of lambs in the fields of the adjacent farm. A most pleasant way of passing the time. The lambs are but one of the animal entertainment features available at Thornley House, there are the cats. At the last count, April 2013, there were six in residence, ranging from kitten, Lang Lang, to two huge Maine coons. The ensemble represent "The House" entertainment troupe that can provide much laughter and comment amongst the guests. Yes, a visitor does have to like cats and, needless to say, we do. Furthermore, there are two donkeys, now part of growing animal residents. To cap it all, there is a beautiful garden well stocked with flowers, shrubs and trees, where one may sit, relax and, watch the world go by.

Eileen and Shirley have proven to be the most accommodating in respect of breakfasts, providing healthy varieties for the weight conscious as well as a hearty "full English" who enjoy their Holiday liberties. Such a meal sets one up for the whole day.

What to do? Hadrian's Wall; walking, and only a few miles north; Vindolanda, museum and archaeological excavations (12 miles); Allen Banks (NT nature trail and walk, 10 miles); the Northumberland coast with its breathtaking views; Shopping? Newcastle and Gateshead Metro Centre, (40 minutes by train from Hexham) Plus so much more.

For eating, in the evening, there are three pubs in Allendale, but they change with time and licensee, so it is as well for the visitor to try themselves.

We believe that we have been very lucky to have found Thornley House and have thoroughly enjoyed our many days, over the years, there. Our enjoyment and the good times we have had are in no small way due to the wonderful way that we have been looked after and advised by Eileen and Shirley. We give a hearty "Thank You" to them both. We hope that future guests find their stay to be at least as good as our own. We shall return again next year.

Thank you for your very kind review. t is always a great pleasure to see you when you come to stay. Pub owners may change with time but there isn't much changes at Thornley House, onlly the size of the family!

As with the previous poster we did not meet the owner Eileen who if even half the stories about her are true sounds quite a carachter.

That aside we were looked after wonderfully by Shirley who made us feel as at home as we could have ever imagined. She takes the time not only to make sure you have everything you need but also to chat, she makes you feel like you are visiting an old friend even though you have just met for the first time.
A wee mention should also go Mike and his lovely wife who were there to let us in when we arrived and serve us with coffee and cakes in the garden, a wonderful start to a wonderful weekend.

The house is in a lovely area and the garden is beautiful and so relaxing you could stay there all weekend without having to venture further afield although there are 3 pubs and a co-op and Allenden village store 1/2 mile up the road and Hexam is only 15 minutes by car. You even get to take a wee bit of the garden home with you as a memento in the form of potted plants.

The real stars of the show of course are the cats (and the rescue donkeys, and the cows, and the sheep). They treat guests as extended family and you cannot help but fall in love with them. Yes they wander into rooms, climb on the bed and sit on the sofas (the cats that is) and while this might not be to everybody's taste, it comes with the territory. Thornley House is a home as much as a B&B and is one of the reasons this place envelops you like a warm blanket. My partner and I have no pets (although we grew up with them) and it was wonderful having all them around, they make you forget the world outside and let you get on with relaxing and enjoying your stay, as the headline says, it truly is a sanctuary.

If we were nit-picking my partner found her bed a wee bit on the soft side but on the other hand I found it perfect for me and would have gladly stayed longer had time allowed.

As mentioned previously, the only downside was that we did not get to meet the intrepid Eileen as I could easily stay a whole weekend just listening to all her travel tales from underneath a bundle of cats while my partner enjoyed the delights of the garden.

...this was because he was trying to get to sleep but young Lang Lang was jumping up under the bottom of the duvet and nipping his toes!

We were sorry to miss Eileen this visit, but the cats kept us highly entertained, especially Lang Lang - whether he was jumping on Sergei's back like a small jockey (much to Sergei's indignation!) or curling up on my knee while I was trying to eat breakfast. All the other cats appeared at some point during our stay, they are all friendly and lovely - what a charmed life they have!

Special mention as always for the delightful Shirley who looked after us during our stay - the baby figs soaked in Amaretto at breakfast have been mentioned in previous reviews, but are worth bringing to your attention so you don't miss them when you visit.

This place is an absolute tonic - it calms your mind and lifts your spirits - well done, Eileen & Shirley.

Here we are again at Thornley House we couldn't wait to return and we haven't been disappointed.
Still a little piece of heaven, and we were delighted to see that Eileen has added to her family since our last visit. Lang Lang a delightful Burmese Red kitten who is causing havoc with the other cats.
Haven' t seen Eileen this visit as she is off on her travels again, this time Iceland!! However we are being looked after as always by Shirley. Thank you Shirley for taking such good care if us. Once again I thoroughly recommend Thornley House for all you cat lovers out there.

Room Tip: We had the room with king size bed and separate art decor bathroom last time. We couldn't book t...

A family visit which we all enjoyed especially the granddaughters who were very reluctant to leave. We were made very welcome in this well maintained property with many original features instead of the bare minimalist features of many modern hotels.Breakfast was served around a large dining table and the choice and quality of the. Food was excellent.

Allendale is an oasis of peace and tranquillity with a small island called Thornley House. If you are looking for somewhere to de-stress this is for you. The pace of life is that of a trotting cat or six to be precise. I never thought rising at 4.00 in the morning could be a pleasure but the view from my window made it an imperative.
The breakfast was the best I have ever eaten from the freshly squeezed orange juice through an eclectic range of cereals and compots. Follow this with a beautifully cooked Northumbrian breakfast but make sure you leave room for the homemade preserves and toast.
Its then time to explore the surrounding town and countryside and enjoy the spectacular! Start though with a stroll along the house's garden trail.

Room Tip: Don't pull the curtains; view in the morning is fantastic!
