“Massively over-rated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

I've eaten at the Chardonnay three times - due to being invited by friends so you can't say no, and it's a good thing they're so pleased with themselves, because no-one else we ate with was.

Poor service, tiny portions and big bills

“1980's throwback experience.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

You sit down before dinner to eat some nuts, browse the menu adder a drink. Then they take you to the table sit you down to eat. Very 80's but very enjoyable. Ben here several times for the experience and the food is always outstanding. Sometimes the tables can be a bit cramped. Make sue you order coffee sweets at the end, they come in dry ice...totally pointless but very retro!

“a shame”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

The food was excellent. The service was helpful as we were given our bread to take home. However, service was very slow with 25-30 minutes between courses. A noisy group close to our table made conversation impossible. Perhaps we were unlucky. The price for a la carte at around £40 per head was OTT. More staff would be an improvement.

“Lunch with Friends”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2012

We were amazed at the value of the set lunch. Excellent food and service and really good value for money. Fresh loaves on the table and the birthday girl took home what we could not eat, a very nice idea.Calfs liver excellent. Have also visted the resurant in the evening for dinner and can report the same high standard. We will be back again very soon

“Every course a delight!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012 via mobile

My first time here, set lunch for £14.50.

I was amazed by the quality of the food served for this extremely well-priced set menu served in this delightful restaurant. First of all we two small half loaves of fresh baked bread, one with sultanas, and the other, white, served with a board and knife to cut one's own helping. Then we were given a small portion of pâté, delicious.
Then our first course - mine was satay of chicken - delicate and tasty - and succulent. Normally I avoid breast of chicken because it is frequently rather dry, but this was perfect. My daughter had a lovely sharp soused herrings with a mustard sauce. She loved it.
Our next course was, for me, calves liver and bacon on mash with onion gravy. Two appetizing slices of slightly pink liver, so tender and nicely caramelised, the slight sweetness of the bread accentuating the flavours. My daughter had the salmon and noodles, and she pronounced it excellent.
Finally, a choice of puddings, I had the light meringue in egg custard - it had a lovely crispy caramel crust which cracked when tapped. A nice change from the version served by the French in restaurants abroad.
With the coffee an intriguing pot arrived and when the lid was lifted the vapour of dry ice poured out, showing finally some fabulous chocolates, quite obviously home made and melt in the mouth.
Each main dish was accompanied by either a vegetable or noodles. It would have been more expensive if extra vegetables had been ordered, but they weren't necessary. I had more than enough to eat.
I unreservedly recommend this restaurant, my first visit from Hampshire, but definitely on the books for a second foray soon.
