“A little bit of peace and heaven on earth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2012

I have been travelling to the Maldives for 40 years. This was my third time at Fun Island over the last 20 years.

Bear in mind this is a low budget ( for the Maldives ) island, you should not expect entertainment, discos, dancing, instead peace and quiet. Who needs discos when, at the end of the Jetty, at night, turtles, mantas and all sorts of fish are just there to watch. There are only 59 rooms so thee island can never get crowded, in fact quite often we were the only ones on the beach.
The food is average, not cordon bleu but is very well presented with lots of choice and some excellent curries every night, an extensive choice of fruit is also available.
In my opinion the beaches and the views, plus the colours make this the most spectacular of the Maldive Islands I have visited.
The house reef is lovely and full of fish and I noted quite a bit of new coral growth showing the Eco system is recovering. Although I did not dive this time I learnt to dive on Fun Island 23 years ago and i know they have spectacular dive sites to go to. The rooms are basic but well cleaned and our room boy was amazing with his bed designs, see pics.
I hope Villa Hotels Pty look after this lovely, beautiful place and look after their staff, especially MrAli Ibrahim the entertainment manager who, although new to Fun Island was an exceptional host, also in reception I must mention Ismail Hamdaan, who was amazing at supplying humour as well as being a fantastic host.
Thanks all of you guys out there Dee and I will be beck soon.

It's only small, but don't be put off by the island's name, as there's really not too much fun to be had, unless you like lazing on the beach, a few feet from the gently lapping sea, Kindle to hand, with barely a sole in sight, for most of the day, until the setting sun reddens the dusk sky. The snorkelling is very crowded (with fish, not people), and quite good fun, unless you don't want to witness a giant moray eel being attacked by another fish half its size; or hanging around for flipping ten minutes waiting for a turtle to come to the surface, to have its photograph taken.

There's not too much fun to be had in the evening either unless you're happy to just wander back down the jetty, after dinner, to see the giant rays perform under the jetties spotlights, before returning to the open air bar, for some occasional entertainment, inside; or to sit outside under a starry sky to avoid it.

Notable pluses: having the same waiter/table for the duration, and freshly made tea in the morning; and free wi fi. Room for improvement: the sun bed cushions need to be replaced with something inside which is not quite so hard as polystyrene. And the rooms need their own safes - safe deposit boxes at reception are a poor substitute.

While booking this resort , i ws initially sceptical reading the wrong stuff on internet.Somehow, we got d confidence to book it & i just loved every part of it during our vacations 4-8 january.

Fun Island is one of the longest islands on Maldives & fun island resort is located in this island. As soon as you enter the resort you see a beautiful carving of Fun Island that looks very welcoming. The lobby is a very sunny place & looks very neat & fresh. You can feel the sea weed smell at most places. The resort has around 50 rooms and all rooms are pretty modern and posh. You feel the beach house experience. We had a good deal from our holiday company for the Maldives stay & touring activity so it was a fun in all.

The room I stayed in was the base category room, the beds were decorated in green. We had a sofa also with the bed which helped us while eating our meals in the morning. We had a small sit out with a wooden chair which would face the sea and some coconut leaves. Around 100 meters from my room we also had a small hammock which helped us for sun bathing or just taking a nap. We also had a night lamp in our room.

The villas are actually shared in one building so generally one will have 2 houses in one building. All rooms to have a fresh feeling are decorated in green. The roof of the house is made of tilted tiles & wood. Thus is you’re go as a family you can take up the whole block. The room is surrounded by many coconut & palm trees.

The beach is just a hop skip & a jump away. They are many beach activities that are undertaken by the hotel. So we all decided to go scuba diving, as the name suggests scuba is that you dive under water with a breathing apparatus. My hubby know how to swim pretty well so this was not a tough task. The hotel organized this very well. As divers are able to scuba dive only at morning times.

Anyways , a great tour organized by Antilog Vacations – the Indian holiday company which gave us a real cheap package to Fun Island & the staff- Mohammaed , Younus & George. You guys really made our stay a pleasant one

Room Tip: The Pool Villas are a good choice with good views down ocean

.........Begging to get back. I've travelled to many places, my heart belongs here.... Bungalows are great, try to stay jetty side or facing inside the reef. Food, is great for the location and retains a smart causal feel at dinner. Many European hotels could learn a thing or two when it comes to service, nothing is any trouble, even the beach is even swept.

The hotel is not too far from Male - its approx. a 45 mins boat ride (lucky for us - we just had to wait for 15 mins for the boat). As soon as we reached the destination - we were quickly taken away to the reception - post which we were shown our rooms. The whole process was trouble free.

The rooms are very basic - nothing fancy (if you dont intend to spend a lot of the time in the room - like us; its perfectly fine). Since it was lunch-time; we quickly changed and went for lunch. The food is good (not great) - after a couple of days - it does get boring (we were there for 3 days and finally got bored - though there were diffrent dishes everyday).

The island by itself was brillant - the lagoon side as well as the beach side is beautiful. You are served cocktails and beer all day at the bar (and its absolulety brillant to sit on sipping your beer). The water is crystal clear on all sides of the island. The only bad thing was that we were not informed that the best place to snorkel which is near the jetty (hence; wasted a day). But once we got to know; dont think we left that place - managed to see a small shark and a turtle as well. The nights are as beautiful as the day - esp the Manta (and sharks) which comes to the jetty every evening.

We even managed to do scuba diving (and did see a sting ray). The villa diving people were brillant (though we were first time divers); they were very helpful and was an enjoyable experience.

They did arrange a lobster dinner for us on the beach - was quite beautiful.

All in all; the resort is great; the reefs are beautiful; very helpful staff (as long as u ask them). Considering the prices in Maldives; and the deal that you could get on this place; its a steal without compromising on the fact that you are in Maldives.

We would like to sum our vacation as follows: Beautiful beaches, white sands, crystal clear water, beautiful reefs, sharks, mantas, sting rays, snorkeling, scuba diving. (as you may see we have not included food and a brillant room) - for that you need to pay a substantial higher price.

Second time to this fabulous Island to clebrate my Birthday.
Bungalows are great with everything you need, front and back doors opening to sandy beaches, and crystal clear water, quiet air conditioning.
Service astounding, nothing is a problem, room staff so helpfull and friendly.
On my birthday our double bed was covered by staff, with thousands of beautiful sweet smelling flower petals, in a fantastic design, and "Happy Birthday" Wow!!
Restaurant and food and drinks was excellent, with lots of choice.
Being a Scuba Diver I was in heaven. Dive shop was first class and friendly.
Dive trips were safe, well organised, varied, at interesting memorable dive sites, with lots to see.
Snorkelling on reefs at the jetty takes your breath away, no need to go diving really.
Fish life is beautiful and astounding!
After dinner relax with a cocktail and let the "Fun" begin, the entertainment was first class, with lots of amusing games, with prizes, music and dancing, everyone joined in and every night became one "Fun Party"
My wife tried and mastered the Sail Board in a day, we water ski´d every day, took a canoe to next unihabited island, to feel like Robinson Crusoe, apart from Diving, all watersports were free.
Best vacation of our life!!!

So much to do, the days just flew by.
I want to go back!!!
John & Penélope.

Room Tip: Bungalows at end of island, left of jetty just the best !!
