“My dream of a tropical island getaway came true in One & Only Rethi Rah.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

I wanted to choose the best for our 20th anniversary. The choices were vast but we only wanted the Best.. A wealthy friend & high end travel agents recommended One & Only Rethi Rah.. It was more pricey than the rest, but totally worth it.. our dreams came true.. We stayed in a beach villa surrounded by soft white sand beaches & crystal clear water. We couldn't have chosen any better. The privacy was Amaizing!! It was the first time in 20 years my husband didn't mind me walking in a bikini on our beach! Thats how private it was.The rooms were amazing in size & the ceilings were very high.. Jacuzzi filled with bubbles & red rose petals & our bed decorated with baby orchids ..rooms were very clean.. Our host Amira would bring us freezing bottles of fresh squeezed juices every morning & was at our beckon call when ever we needed her. Restaurants were many & food choice was excellent. Were planning in going back in the near future..

Expectation is everything, i came to think before writing this review since i am having a hard time whether to write positively or negatively. First of all there is nothing to be said about the setting of the hotel; it is on a big island where green and blue meets with sandy white beaches and gorgeous tropical trees. The villas, the overall architecture is minimal, chic and relaxing. Even the standart villas are huge with high ceilings, there is a lot of space within and outside the rooms ( even an hammock on your front yard) Because it is a big island it has the possibility to offer maximum privacy for each villa. Most of the time you have the beach right in front of you to yourself and you dint need to see a soul unless you go to the common beach club.
Also another privilage of being a big resort is to be able to offer several restaurants. Some resorts have 1 or 2. We ate at all of them (5) and enjoyed the food except the beach restaurant. In addition they offer half board packages which is unusal for such premium hotels.
We would have been very satisfied and happy if resort was called X and not One and Only. We always thought it was one of the most luxurious hotel in the maldives competing with Four Seasons. Well, we are sorry but the overall service cannot begin to compete with Four Seasons. ( we went there last year). Most of the waiting staff was unattentive. The beach service is good if they care to work on that day otherwise they would be playing pool instead. And they are slow most of time, we experienced it in nearly all restaurants. İt took 45 mins for our villa butler to get us a dvd one night. We couldnt get a nice cold beer anywhere they were all served warm and needed to be put in ice. How about coconut the juice? The signature of maldives, it was served hot since they were claiming that they were cut of from the trees immediately, well one should ask how they do it in four seasons because they were always cold and yummy.
There is a diving school led by Germans but surprisingly we didnt feel they were doing a professional job by throwing first timers into shallow water with no preparation anywhere else oyher than teoric introduction.
Finally i was expecting a small gesture from the management when we missed our flight and had to pay 2 nights we couldnt come to the hotel. I totally understand the policy of no show however even a small bottle of wine, a spa gift etc even would cheer unlucky guests like ourselves. ( Oh the spa is something else, it was the only department in the hotel with explicit service, superb massage treatments in fantastic rooms and resting area).
There many many alternatives in the area and hotels with such a competitive name have to do whatever they can not to lose against the newer resorts. "premium" service requires this and one gets frustrated when it is not fully offered. Maldives is a fantastic but expensive holiday area where even the 4star hotels start from €500 so it should worth every penny and deliver the paradise in full meaning.
To summarize; if you pre-plan get a really good package with transportation and half board etc. DO GO it is a beautiful resort. But if you are paying a fortune and are a picky person choose somewhere else. As i said there are thousands of alternatives.
Finally i'd like to end with a comment with our travel agency; atollparadise was refferred to us by friends. They are a local agency and they have to best rates i have seen so for. They are the first ones to welcome you and make sure u are handed to your resort and last one to say goodbye untill the departure gates. I also liked the fact that they called our room a couple of days later to see how we are doing. Highly recommend their service www.atollparadise.com

Having visited RR 3 times now, I have to say it is a Beautiful island - it is very much man made however this means a great layout and a very clean and well maintained look, rather then the more natural look that some other islands have (not a good nor bad thing, just personal preference)

The Food is exceptional with fantastic choice of menus and the new beach club is a welcome addition for day time activity. The service however can be very slow at times, which can be frustrating, especially when your food arrives before the wine on more than 1 occasion.

Our favourite beach is grand beach, the sand seems nice on this side (although still grainy compared to other islands that have the true talcum-powder sand). The sunset views on this side of the island are very good too. I would recommend a villa with pool. The general pool areas are exceptionally well kept and provide stunning views.

The house reef is best from the best however for marine life there are excursions where you can almost guarantee to snorkel with turtles or eagle rays which are amongst the best trips we have done in the maldives. I would also recommend the sand Bank excursion (where we actually got engaged, on the 'Prince Albert' sand bank)

Overall I would recommend RR for couples however with children I think families may be more suited to one of the Four seasons resorts

Room Tip: beach villa with pool

We took a duplex villa for the whole family which is two villas side by side, one with swimming pool and one without.

The hotel is huge, they gave us our own buggy to use for moving around the resort. They have 4 restaurant all amazing so you can dine at a different restaurant each night.

We were worried to go in the mansoon season but honestly swimming in the rain was an amazing experience and also everytime it rains, you feel a cool breeze afterward.

Hi just spent a week at the one and only Reethi Rah. Our 5th stay in the maldives. The food and service was 5 star plus. You could not ask for more. Attention to detail is paramount throughout the resort. The staff are attentive and not overbearing. Complementary afternoon tea and soft drinks on the beach. There are numerous alternative venues to eat and activities. We have stayed at other resorts in the Maldives but this must be rated as one of the best!!

We stayed her on our honeymoon in December 2010, so this is a much overdue review. It was simply the best place, most calming, but still luxurious experience we've ever had traveling. Service--best ever. Staff-to-guest ratio is unrivaled anywhere. Felt like a king and queen. But the service was kind, friendly, quiet--not overbearing at any time. The beaches were pristine. The weather when we traveled was perfect. Maybe 1-2 overcast, somewhat rainy days. But 80% of the time, sunny and beautiful with a nice breeze. Food was great--enough choices across the 3 restaurants, to keep things interesting (though we love sushi, and went there about 3 times). The resort was probably 80% occupied--but it felt like we had some much space, comfort. If you wanted some 'scene' there were a few areas to socialize--which was nice. We had originally booked 5 nights at O&O Reethi Rah, and 5 nights at Four Seasons Landaa Giravaru. Our first 5 days were at O&O. We were sad to be leaving on the seaplane on day 6. We checked into Four Seasons took a tour around...and my wife within 1 hour, regretted that we weren't staying at O&O the whole time. Me too. We called our US travel agent (Lindsay at Linara Travel) and he was able to get us back into O&O. So we literally cancelled our stay at Four Seasons, and checked back into the O&O/Reethi Rah, within 24 hours. I also highly recommend staying in a Beach Villa vs. an over the water Villa. You have a lot more space to move around---and even with the resort 80% occupied--it felt like we had our own private beach. Rarely saw others on the beach. I've recommended this trip to anyone who will listen to me, planning their own honeymoon. Worth every penny and more (felt like I'd rented out the whole beach!).

Room Tip: I think Beach Villas are the way to go. We had one with a pool, one without. Pool is not necessary...

Where to start?

The place is astoundingly great :) We spent the first couple of days walking round smiling and saying just how perfect the place was. My wife was saying constantly that she didnt realise places like this existed.

We stayed in villa 199 and from start to finish it was just perfect. The beach in front was essentially ours as was the beautiful blue ocean in front. The villa was beautiful with a massive bath, lovely shutters which open directly in front of the bed and give you an amazing view of the world...the sea, sun and beach in front.

Our villa host was great as were all staff throughout our stay - a real commendation to O&O as it cant be easy to motivate and train staff to be so consistently exceptional across the board.

The facilities and service are second to none in our experience and everyone we spoke to at the resort agreed this place is something else.

Key things to note:

Breakfast - I have had the pleasure of staying in many luxury properties but this was the best breakfast ever and honestly we didnt need to eat lunch...the variety available, the quality of the ingredients and the flavours were just perfect

Dinner - we actually got a deal which was half board and as a result I thought perhaps the food in the evenings would be fairly average...well we got a great surprise. 4 great restaurants albeit we only managed to eat in 3 (due to weather on last night).

Takesake - Japanese was exceptionally good...beautiful views across the ocean and on our second last night we had a pavilion which juts out into the ocean - truly unforgettable. The food itself was 1st rate...I have had the pleasure of eating a lot of Japanese in London and Japan itself and this was right up there...imo better than Nobu :)

Fanditha - In honesty I didn’t think the food there (lobster and fish) was quite as good as the other restaurants but then that is a very high bar that had been set. The setting was unforgettable - tables arranged on the sandy beach as the waves lap at the shore...

[This is also Sunset bar - cool mellow tunes are played by a great DJ as the rougher sea crashes on the rocks - You can lie on beds in a truly romantic setting]

Reethi restaurant - actually it is 3 restaurants in one area with different themes - we ate here most nights - the food across the board is of a very high standard and mouth-watering

Afternoon tea - each day in the hotel there is afternoon tea which is complimentary and as usual this exceeds initial expectation with a wide array of options including freshly baked pancakes and lots of yummy snacks

Bars:

Fanditha as above was exceptionally nice for sunset

Club 1 - Beach club where there are lots of watersports, tennis close at hand, table tennis, pool and other things too. Beds on the beach to lie on - think Ibiza...really cool place we went every day and were given complimentary Evian vaporiser spray and ices teas...cocktails could be ordered and the staff were exceptional

Rah Bar - Main bar with entertainment every night and nice spot

Swimming pool - infinity pool which juts into the ocean and was amazing and another nice pool too

The sea is like nothing else and there is lots to do on the island...buggies take you anywhere you want or you can bike...

Activities:

Flippers and snorkel can be picked up from the dive centre, Tennis, Yoga once a day (in an amazing hut over the water) and non motorised watersports all complimentary.

We did a great snorkelling trip and I swam super close with a massive turtle...there were thousands of fish and generally a good day :)

It sounds amazing but at what price?

It is AMAZING! Celebs are there quite a bit (beckham was there as reported in the sun last Christmas) and at high season it would be way way out of our price range. It was our honeymoon and it was a week of splashout...having said that if you manage to get a decent deal I could not recommend highly enough.

I think if you come to this place you know you are not in for a cheap week but in honesty (with the half board) I thought it could have been much higher prices. A cocktail I guess is $25, a beer maybe $12, snorkling trip for the day $100, dinner quite punchy if not on the half board I guess with mains maybe around $65 average

Spa was a bit expensive and not that great in honesty but that was probably the only thing I would have said was not knockout

Overall, could not recommend highly enough - as the previous guests of villa poignantly noted, the only thing you have to be aware of before booking is that this place could quite easily ruin every holiday for the rest of your life as nothing is going to be this good!

Was perfect as a couple but lots of small families and perfect for them too...

Enjoy...
