“Best...place...ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2013

We stayed her on our honeymoon in December 2010, so this is a much overdue review. It was simply the best place, most calming, but still luxurious experience we've ever had traveling. Service--best ever. Staff-to-guest ratio is unrivaled anywhere. Felt like a king and queen. But the service was kind, friendly, quiet--not overbearing at any time. The beaches were pristine. The weather when we traveled was perfect. Maybe 1-2 overcast, somewhat rainy days. But 80% of the time, sunny and beautiful with a nice breeze. Food was great--enough choices across the 3 restaurants, to keep things interesting (though we love sushi, and went there about 3 times). The resort was probably 80% occupied--but it felt like we had some much space, comfort. If you wanted some 'scene' there were a few areas to socialize--which was nice. We had originally booked 5 nights at O&O Reethi Rah, and 5 nights at Four Seasons Landaa Giravaru. Our first 5 days were at O&O. We were sad to be leaving on the seaplane on day 6. We checked into Four Seasons took a tour around...and my wife within 1 hour, regretted that we weren't staying at O&O the whole time. Me too. We called our US travel agent (Lindsay at Linara Travel) and he was able to get us back into O&O. So we literally cancelled our stay at Four Seasons, and checked back into the O&O/Reethi Rah, within 24 hours. I also highly recommend staying in a Beach Villa vs. an over the water Villa. You have a lot more space to move around---and even with the resort 80% occupied--it felt like we had our own private beach. Rarely saw others on the beach. I've recommended this trip to anyone who will listen to me, planning their own honeymoon. Worth every penny and more (felt like I'd rented out the whole beach!).

Room Tip: I think Beach Villas are the way to go. We had one with a pool, one without. Pool is not necessary...

Where to start?

The place is astoundingly great :) We spent the first couple of days walking round smiling and saying just how perfect the place was. My wife was saying constantly that she didnt realise places like this existed.

We stayed in villa 199 and from start to finish it was just perfect. The beach in front was essentially ours as was the beautiful blue ocean in front. The villa was beautiful with a massive bath, lovely shutters which open directly in front of the bed and give you an amazing view of the world...the sea, sun and beach in front.

Our villa host was great as were all staff throughout our stay - a real commendation to O&O as it cant be easy to motivate and train staff to be so consistently exceptional across the board.

The facilities and service are second to none in our experience and everyone we spoke to at the resort agreed this place is something else.

Key things to note:

Breakfast - I have had the pleasure of staying in many luxury properties but this was the best breakfast ever and honestly we didnt need to eat lunch...the variety available, the quality of the ingredients and the flavours were just perfect

Dinner - we actually got a deal which was half board and as a result I thought perhaps the food in the evenings would be fairly average...well we got a great surprise. 4 great restaurants albeit we only managed to eat in 3 (due to weather on last night).

Takesake - Japanese was exceptionally good...beautiful views across the ocean and on our second last night we had a pavilion which juts out into the ocean - truly unforgettable. The food itself was 1st rate...I have had the pleasure of eating a lot of Japanese in London and Japan itself and this was right up there...imo better than Nobu :)

Fanditha - In honesty I didn’t think the food there (lobster and fish) was quite as good as the other restaurants but then that is a very high bar that had been set. The setting was unforgettable - tables arranged on the sandy beach as the waves lap at the shore...

[This is also Sunset bar - cool mellow tunes are played by a great DJ as the rougher sea crashes on the rocks - You can lie on beds in a truly romantic setting]

Reethi restaurant - actually it is 3 restaurants in one area with different themes - we ate here most nights - the food across the board is of a very high standard and mouth-watering

Afternoon tea - each day in the hotel there is afternoon tea which is complimentary and as usual this exceeds initial expectation with a wide array of options including freshly baked pancakes and lots of yummy snacks

Bars:

Fanditha as above was exceptionally nice for sunset

Club 1 - Beach club where there are lots of watersports, tennis close at hand, table tennis, pool and other things too. Beds on the beach to lie on - think Ibiza...really cool place we went every day and were given complimentary Evian vaporiser spray and ices teas...cocktails could be ordered and the staff were exceptional

Rah Bar - Main bar with entertainment every night and nice spot

Swimming pool - infinity pool which juts into the ocean and was amazing and another nice pool too

The sea is like nothing else and there is lots to do on the island...buggies take you anywhere you want or you can bike...

Activities:

Flippers and snorkel can be picked up from the dive centre, Tennis, Yoga once a day (in an amazing hut over the water) and non motorised watersports all complimentary.

We did a great snorkelling trip and I swam super close with a massive turtle...there were thousands of fish and generally a good day :)

It sounds amazing but at what price?

It is AMAZING! Celebs are there quite a bit (beckham was there as reported in the sun last Christmas) and at high season it would be way way out of our price range. It was our honeymoon and it was a week of splashout...having said that if you manage to get a decent deal I could not recommend highly enough.

I think if you come to this place you know you are not in for a cheap week but in honesty (with the half board) I thought it could have been much higher prices. A cocktail I guess is $25, a beer maybe $12, snorkling trip for the day $100, dinner quite punchy if not on the half board I guess with mains maybe around $65 average

Spa was a bit expensive and not that great in honesty but that was probably the only thing I would have said was not knockout

Overall, could not recommend highly enough - as the previous guests of villa poignantly noted, the only thing you have to be aware of before booking is that this place could quite easily ruin every holiday for the rest of your life as nothing is going to be this good!

Was perfect as a couple but lots of small families and perfect for them too...

Enjoy...

The last time I stayed at Reethi Rah was 6 years ago, since the resort has become an amazing place. The Villas are spacious, very comfortable, everything is there for you. The pool are great with amazing sea views.
Different restaurant concept available, I loved the open air Tapanyake restaurant, the tuna is unbelievable. The restaurant Earth is offering fish or meat cooked on a Himalayan salt brick, very original. Their antipasti buffet section is fantastic with a large selection of different olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The setting of Fanditha is magical, you relax, enjoy a cocktail and life is amazing.
For me the highlights are the attention to details all over the resorts and the friendly & elegant service from all resort staff. They smile, they greet you, you feel at home.

Reethi Rah experience was exceptional, an opportunity to reconnect in an amazing environment.

This stunning resort is on a large island with plenty of facilities and activities for all the family to enjoy, the children particularly enjoyed a fishing trip where they caught lots of fish. We stayed in a beach villa which was beautiful and really spacious, the private beach and pool felt extremely secluded and was the perfect place to relax. The service and food was great throughout the resort, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The landscaping and views on the island are stunning. This was like no other beach holiday in the Maldives or elsewhere, it was so good we extended our stay by two nights.

Room Tip: Book a villa with a private pool.

This resort is one of the most expensive in the world but you get every single penny's worth. It is a magical place. The staff are extremely friendly, the food at the Tapasake Japanese restaurant is one of the best in the world (making such a statement after living in Japan for a while). The island is one of the biggest but belongs to the whole resort. They have bicycles that are allotted to your bungalow which you can use while to stay there. During the day we would explore the island and visit the different beaches.
My husband and I stayed in the water villa. This is a must as its quite an experience to wake up and just plunge into the ocean and swim with your new friends under water (I mean the fish).
But if you are going with kids I highly recommend the Beach villa that has it's own pool.
There are several activities you can do at the resort, mostly water activities. We went diving. Every night there is some event which you can reserve to go to by telling your own personal Concierge... yes your own personal one!!
It is so beautiful that our favorite line through the trip was : "Oh my God, this is amazing!" We sounded like broken records. I would go there again in a heart beat!!

We needed to pinch ourselves a few times to make sure we weren't dreaming. Absolute perfection. Overwater bungalow, room service, restaurants, service, beach, pool, spa, doctor - all perfect. Little things make a difference and they certainly deliver them - I'm still wait for someone to come by and offer to clean my sunglasses anytime I'm relaxing by a pool or on a beach :) This resort is a slice of heaven. Best of the best. Highly recommended.
