This review is written as a warning to the uninitiated. The island is relentless in extracting money for the smallest detail. It's like going on vacation with an ex-wife. Whatever they quote you for the room, at least double it.

The positives are that the hotel or island, whatever you call it, is spectacular. Service is great for the most part. Lots of fun, which is why we have been back despite not feeling completely clean in conscience when we leave.

Negatives are value for money - horrible - and waiting for buggies which never seem to come.

Room Tip: Get a two bedroom "villa" or bigger and get a private buggy. This helps ease the pain of b...

Stayed May 2010:

It has taken me two years to find the time to write this review but my memories of this place are still so special I still felt it apt to write a review. We stayed here for the first week of our 4 week honeymoon (the rest was in Africa) and it was just perfect in every sense. We wanted a really relaxing first week after the hectic wedding organising and so it was.

Starting with the villa we stayed in a beach villa with a pool. Although the over water villa was the same price we felt the beach villa was more private and it was- we effectively had our own stretch of beach as only one person walked past all week. It is also quite windy in May and the over water villas were very exposed to this. Although the pool may seem unnecessary with the beach nearby it was lovely having drinks in there before dinner and nice for a late night swim.

The staff went out of their way to look after you and there were many nice touches such as bringing us hot chocolate out to sea when we were on the sea platform, iced tea and fruit on the beach, leaving special treats in the room and making us a card with the label of our favourite wine that we drank most nights in the Japanese restaurant!

Restaurants were all five star- food fantastic in all three. We attended two events whilst there a honeymoon couples drinks party and the managers weekly champagne and canape event-both great. We loved the bikes for riding around the island- and that you could leave them at any restaurant and they would be 'magically'returned to your villa by the following morning. There was a great buggy service for if you felt lazy to walk or it was raining.

The spa was lovely especially the over water massage pavillions- pretty expensive but worth a try!

We have recommended the resort to many friends subsequently who all are hightly impressed, some of whom have children and say the kids club and babysitting service was amazing.

Room Tip: May-August can be windy- some beaches more than others so ask to move rooms if you are on the windy...

Husband booked us 10 days here,he wanted it to be special as we had not been on holiday together with our young children.

Location was great, views great and staff were friendly ( esp. on the first day).

On our first night in our beautiful villa all 4 of us were bitten by bed bugs, we scratched all night without any sleep. Next morning I complained and had sheets changed. Following night wasnt so bad but my 6 yr old and myself had been bitten by mosquitoes!

On our first evening we had dinner at the Chef's Garden special buffet.Food was not great (fish overdone so dry) and portions extremely small, my boys shared a meal, we had 2 deserts and 2 glasses of wine. The total bill came to £300 (equiv in dollars).

Food prices in the restaurants within the resort inc. room service and kids meals at the club were extortionate beyond belief. We paid 70 dollars for a very bad burger! All 4 of us got food poisoning too.We all vomited for 24hrs and couldnt stomach food for another 24 hrs.

On third day we went to another themed special buffet, where only my husband and I ate very little, boys had juice. Total bill came to nearly £400 ( equiv in dollars).

We were given complimentary bicycles to get around the resort on, all of them were broken or rusted beyond belief so didnt work. Husband got stranded twice, far from our villa in the smouldering heat because the rusted pedal fell off his bicycle. This happened to him twice, again after it was allegedly repaired!!!

The management aren't very genuine and put on fronts i.e. the celebrities and uber uber rich got the daily happy greeting.

I hated the place after day 3 and couldnt wait to leave.I even blamed and fought with hubby for making such a bad choice. I felt we were being robbed as soon we were inside the resort, as we are trapped. If the food was great, my bed sheets were clean to begin with and the bicycles worked I would not be so disappointed.

My best holiday ever was the Datai, Langkawi, Malaysia. The customer service, ambience and food was superb.

My husband and I returned to the Maldives this year for some well needed R&R and decided to stay at the One&Only Reethi Rah - One&Only being one of my favourite hotel chains here in Dubai. We were there for the first week in July - which marks the end of the rainy season (indeed there were still a few rain storms but they were very short and actually added to the overall experience) - the weather was balmy and pleasant - consistently around the low 30's (degrees). The experience as a whole was very enjoyable, much as you would expect from a high end luxury resort in this part of the world. From check in through to departure everything was managed perfectly and we were left to our own devices to relax and chose what we wanted to do when we wanted to do it. The island is one of the larger ones - it is immaculately kept and the surrounding water is slightly deeper than the last island we visited. Sea life for snorkelling immediately around the island is excellent on one side and not the other. One side of the island at this time of year can be quite choppy and the other is very calm. We stayed in a beach villa on the slightly choppy side - which was known at this time of the year as the sunset side (the other side being the sunrise side) we enjoyed and preferred the beaches on our side of the island. The F&B options are great on the island, notable mention for Tapasaki their Japanese restaurant - which is excellent, although every other restaurant was of a very high standard - including the fresh seafood "bar snacks" although i feel i am doing them an injustice by calling them this!. We were made to feel special and valued at the resort by all staff, who were all extremely helpful and friendly - big thanks to our villa host - Shams - who went out of his way to make our stay extra personalised and special without us asking! There are a variety of activities to do on the island - focused on keeping fit and enjoying yourself - the gym is well equipped, there are sand badminton courts, tennis courts an array of water sports (motorised and non) and (quite surprisingly) the resort caters quite heavily for children of all ages with a kids club/nannies etc. there are free classed (yoga and other things) every day at the spa/fitness centre - I am not sure what to make of the fact that there were a lot of children on the resort when we stayed as that is not really what i wanted to experience (we are a childless couple looking for exclusive style luxury and relaxation) - for couples with children that want to have a romantic and relaxing break away WITH the kids - this is a great option - for couples wanting to get away from it all and focus more on romance - this also works - but feels a bit more "commercial hotel" that possibly some of the other "hideaway" style escapes that are on offer in the Maldives.

Room Tip: for beach villas - choose the side of the island (depending on time of year) that is getting the mos...

We just returned from O&O Reethi Rah. A prior review gets its exactly right: “The most perfect resort anywhere - but you pay dearly for the privilege of staying here.”

This is a special spot in the world where the bright aquamarine water stretches on and on and eventually gives way to the deep sapphire ocean. Snorkel with sea turtles? Sure. Swim off your own private villa deck with nurse sharks and spotted eagle rays? Absolutely. Sip cocktails at sunset on a private sandbank in the middle of the Indian Ocean? Very good. Then indulge in a feast of dish after dish (after dish) of specially prepared cuisines paired with the finest south african wines? And this was just day one.

Without a doubt, this is the most perfect resort anywhere. The gem of the Maldives. It should be a wonder of the world. It is true, you pay dearly for the privilege of experiencing paradise. O&O will attract clientele looking for an extremely luxurious and private experience, where cost must be of no concern. Accept this and the keys to paradise are yours.

We were one of three couples staying at Reethi Rah for a week in July 2012, to celebrate a 50th birthday. We all travel extensively for work and pleasure so typically arrive at resorts a little jaded, often with low expectations.

However the One and Only Reethi Rah hit the mark perfectly. We ate very well, exercised, fished, snorkelled, swam, cycled and so on. Great location, beautiful island, excellent food, good service and settings to die for.

I have no doubt we will return. Special mention to our concierge Badhur, the GM Mark and the Resort/F&B Manager Johannes. These people are genuinely friendly, responsive, and professional.
