“We had the most wonderful week and will definitely return”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

We were greeted on arrival at Male airport by Lily's rep that managed to get the seaplane check in done very quickly even with all the confusion surrounding the MAT counters. We had to spend more time than usual at Lily’s Male lounge due to persistent thunderstorms that delayed our seaplane departure. The lounge is very comfortable but after spending a few hours there we only got some snacks after enquiring. A variety of drinks were readily available though.

Arriving at Lily Beach by seaplane is an experience on its own and we were pleasantly surprised with all the arrangements. We had a staff member waiting for us at the pier to take us immediately to our water villa where we did the check in due to the long wait we had at Male, we were told which we thought was very thoughtful.

Due to the recurring thunderstorms on our arrival day and evening we thought our week was completely ruined but following day was business as usual with the odd shower but wonderful weather overall. Food is good, especially at Lily-Maa where you can choose what and how much you want to eat. Due to the platinum package you end up over doing it in the calorie intake chapter and after a couple of days we decided not to have lunch at all and just enjoy the sun and pool at our water villa deck and the uncountable hours of snorkeling. At this stage we want to call the attention to management irt the mini-fridge which is refilled every day as part of the platinum plan. The drink list excludes juices or any kind of non sparkling beverages which we believe is wrong when you have 2 different brands of beer?? It would also be an excellent touch if they added a couple pieces of fruit or even “leftover” pastries from breakfast?

We would like to thank all the staff members at Lily Beach but 2 in special, Mr. Waheed from housekeeping and Faseeh from Lily-Maa restaurant, well done to both of them, they quickly learnt our names, our tastes and our needs and helped our stay be as memorable as it could be.

Another word to management… where were you? We spent a bit of a fortune in this resort, spent one full week there and we still do not know who runs the place? It would have been nice to have been introduced to management just for that extra feeling of “home away from home” you so advertise…

A word of thanks to Iroshi from Ocean Dive Pro Centre for his patience and making my birthday a memorable one.

One thing left a sour taste in our mouths and we hope it was just bad luck and not a recurrent thing. After all was so very well organized at Lily Beach for our very early departure, early wakeup call, early bag collection, early breakfast, as soon as we got out of the seaplane at Male, we saw no one from Lily Beach to help us until we flew out of the Maldives... We called Lily Beach twice to enquire just to be told the first time to wait as they were going to check and after not receiving any call back and now panicking as we could not find our luggage, we were told that there was nothing Lily Beach could do and I should address this with management on my return. We finally found our luggage and did all departure procedures on our own.

All in all an excellent value for money experience, we do recommend it and will return but next time for a longer period as when you spend just a week when you settle down and start really enjoying the place it is time to leave…

Room Tip: Water villas definitely... further away from the Island the better if looking for privacy

Upon arrival in the Male airport, we were met by the hotel representative and taken by bus to the hotel dedicated lounge in the seaplane terminal. The lounge appeared to be small but comfortable. It offers complimentary snacks and beverages and has comfortable sofas for a short nap. In about 20 minutes we were escorted to our seaplane. It takes 25 minutes by a seaplane to get to the hotel and the flight offers an amazing view of some other islands.
Maldives is a snorkeling/diving paradise. Snorkeling at the hotel is just perfect. The house reef is just a dozen of meters from the beach and the variety of fish is impressive. Bear in mind, however, that due to the tide no swimming is allowed after 5.30 pm.
The hotel has been renovated a few years ago and generally is well maintained. It has all essential facilities for the beach vacation at the Maldives. Shower and the toilet are outside of the room. With all the people walking by your villa you have a feeling being in public even though the facilities are separated by fence.
Water villas are not worth paying extra. They do not have their own territory or a piece of a beach for the sun bed.
The problem is that the hotel territory is simply too small for the number of guests. The island is packed with villas. As a result, you can smell the food walking on the terrace of your villa. Unlike some other hotels in the Maldives, the staff lives on the island as well. A huge part inside the island is surrounded by a high fence.
The hotel offers a platinum plan which basically means that unless you go for diving you do not have to spend any money at the island. Restaurant meals, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, rental of snorkeling equipment, non-motorized water sports are included. You may also choose two tour offered by the hotel. However the only one that is worth taking is a sunset fishing. Strangely enough, it usually starts an hour before the sunset and there will be no fish before the sunset.
The rented equipment is free but the quality is poor. It is worth bringing your own mask and the tube. Furthermore, on our first day all of the equipment was rented out and we failed to get one mask.
After Dubai we were shocked to see no lifeguards on duty. Only occasionally the staff from the water sports center would notice breach of the rules and intervene. The security does not seem to be the priority of the hotel. When upon checking in we noticed that an emergency torch was missing, we were told simply by the reception that the hotel did not have enough torches. Feeding of fishes and sharks is an amusement that the hotel offers for free on a daily basis, however there is nothing between the crowd full of kids and the dangerous creatures. We wonder whether anyone has fallen down in the water.
The hotel has several restaurants offering meals at various times. The variety of meals is impressive, but after the first day we realized that we do not want to approach most of the dishes. You will not die of hunger however.
Most of the guests during our stay were from China. They did not speak any English or at least pretended that they do not. Their behavior was quite unpleasant at some times. They would consistently occupy sun beds allocated to our villa and would be reluctant to move. Drinking water in the fridge at the beach they would use as a shower. Their kids would enjoy the time splashing in the quite zone swimming pool. The staff did not pay much attention to this.
We have read that prior to the renovation the resort was a three star hotel. The facility has been upgraded but most of the personnel remains from the old times. This seems to be true. At the very least, the staff has not been trained to greet the guests and would often not even respond when you say hello.
Wi-fi is free but unstable.

Pros
- Perfect snorkeling at the house reef
- Well maintained facilities
- Platinum plan allows you to budget your spendings

Cons:
- The hotel territory is too small for the resort
- Staff not properly trained
- No lifeguards on duty
- Smell from the restaurants on the beach
- Poor quality of rental equipment
- Limited operating hours of the fitness centre

Room Tip: Water villas are not worth paying extra; don't take lagoon villas

We have just returned from our amazing stay at the Lily Beach Resort and Spa and we cannot recommend it highly enough. From the minute we arrived off the seaplane we were greeted by very welcoming staff and pampered immediately with fresh towels and refreshments. We took a boat from the seaplane to our island Huvahendo it was lovely as they greeted us playing bongo drums. Our first impressions of the Malives weren't great as we got quite a shock to say the least at the airport. It was very run down, there was no AC and the staff were very slow and unhelpful. There were endless queues of people and they took forever, not what you want after 23hours travelling!
Any negative thoughts we had from the airport were erased as soon as we reached our destination. If you are worried about the weather with it being monsoon season, don't let it put you off. If I'm honest that's the one concern I had too, but it was amazing from the minute we got there. Despite there being thunderstorms prior to our arrival. We were so lucky as it didn't even rain once the whole 10 days. Overall we had a fantastic stay, there are so many things Lily Beach have to offer. We were so sad to leave and wished we'd only a few more days to chill by the infinity pool(our favourite spot). We had our own private area on the beach with cool boxes full of beer and drinks everyday. Our room was beautiful too, our bathroom was outside, felt weird showering but it added to the whole experience of being on the island, it was so remote, quiet and relaxing which was just what we'd hoped for! We enjoyed complimentary honeymoon treats such as full body massages in the stunning spa, the girls were fantastic. And a meal in the Karamari Indian restaurant which was gorge and they even served our favourite Chilean red wine( all booze was real deal/same labels at home). We were also treated to a beautiful candlelit dinner which was fantastic, the steak was cooked to perfection! It was my 30th Birthday whilst we were there and my husband asked the waiting staff to do a cake for me, they went that little bit further and gave a cake/singsong and did up our room as a surprise with fresh flowers and a little note on the bed with an arrow pointing to the Jacuzzi which too was outside and filled with flowers. It was such a nice experience from start to finish and we really made the most of the facilities and the all inclusive package available! Overall a fab honeymoon, would definitely go back again! Most certainly a luxury 5* resort, with friendly staff (especially the man at the infinity pool and Abdul our waiter:)).

We recently stayed two weeks in the Maldives – the first at Maafushivaru and the next at Lily. We absolutely loved both, but for anyone thinking of booking, here are a list of pros and cons for Lily:

Pros
- customer service: every single member of staff was polite and courteous. This included when reporting any minor faults in the room eg a light bulb that needed replacing was fixed almost immediately.

- the wonderful welcome - we were given cold flannels, water and fruit on the journey to the island, and when arriving at the jetty were greeted by a drummer in traditional Maldivian clothing and a small group of hotel staff providing a warm welcome

- the food is just delicious, there is so much to choose from! There are live cooking stations and the chefs there will cook to order for you. The bars at either end of the island also provide delicious food, and the name 'bar' doesn't do justice to the Vibes bar when the food there is of fine dining quality!

- the reef is excellent: huge variety of fish, rays and many turtles just meters from the lagoon villa we were staying in.

The cons

- While there are some very pretty spots on the island, particularly looking out over the beautiful infinity pool at Aqua pool bar, there are some areas where Lily really struggle. The wave breakers are of course essential, but there's no doubt they ruin the view, and there are some very visible sand bags near Vibes bar, all of which ruin the illusion of paradise. Lily just doesn’t compare to Maafushivaru in the beauty stakes I’m afraid.

- Excursions - we chose to go on the sunset cruise and snorkelling trip. Both were disappointing. The crew on our snorkelling trip took us to three very bland areas for snorkelling, and we were able to see much more just outside of our own villa. We felt they could have taken the opportunity to talk about the sea life to us on the boat ride, but this didn't happen. The sunset cruise was set up well, the upper deck of the boat had mini tables for couples to share, with a mini bottle of Cava on as well as nibbles. Great idea, but why provide the cheapest and blandest food and drink on a boat when the island provides champagne and delicious food for all inclusive guests? We didn't understand why there was such a difference in quality!

- Tamarind restaurant: the restaurant is beautiful at night, we were fortunate to get an outside table on one of the the pretty balconies and the clever lighting made a very romantic evening. We had high hopes for the food, as the 'Asian platter' lunch served at the Aqua bar nearby was the best I've ever eaten, and felt sure that Tamarind would be on the same par as this was it's speciality cuisine. Unfortunately the food just didn't meet the high standard the rest of the island had already set, and we left feeling disappointed.

- Puddings: While the food was delicious, the small single bite portion puddings all had the same bland taste. These beautiful looking desserts were items such as mini cheesecake, lemon tart etc. The desserts were exactly the same at Maafushivaru and it almost seemed that the resorts ordered them in bulk from Iceland supermarket they tasted so bland! The other bigger portion desserts such as crumble served from a large dish were delicious!

Overall, this is a wonderful place to stay, there are a few minor issues but the food alone would have us come back and stay here!

My rating here is a bit biased in that I am comparing this against other five star properties I have stayed. This is my 15th visit to the maldives and if this were a four star property I would give it a 4 or 5. There is nothing wrong with Lily beach. Service is adequate, but it is only adequate. We stayed in a sunset villa with a room butler and our butler was just ok. He did what you asked but nothing more. I have been to resorts where your private butler went out of their way to service you but that was not the case during our stay. The best for instance i can give is that the first two mornings we agreed he would pick us up at a certain time for breakfast. Fifteen minutes after that time we had to call and wake him up.
The rooms were very nice and comfortable. The food and beverages were plentiful and the wine offer was not bad for an all inclusive resort. You can upgrade if you choose. The food quality was OK but lacked creativity and flavor. Perhaps I am looking for too much but it seemed that the resort was lacking an executive chef to add life to the food.
I rarely ever saw the management on the property and it showed in lackluster service levels. Important to note that the service was never bad, but was also never that great either.
All in I would rate the lily experience as average but the value is slightly above average especially if you take advantage of the all inclusive bar offer.
There is nothing wrong with this resort it all depends on what you want. I prefer high food and wine quality over price so this resort is only average for me. The greatest disappointment is that the staff just appeared to be poorly trained and there was a clear lack of management presence tat the resort.

Lily Beach really is a tropical paradise.
The island is spectacular offering an amazing sea/beach experience. Especially the snorkling opportunities directly outside your room

The room is fanatstic, offering all services you can think of. An excellent layout and setup, especially the open planned bathroom. Always very clean and refreshed atleast once a day.
Feautures include free wifi, minibar, tv, aircon, dvd system, safe, coffee machine.
The veranda, equipped with loungers, leads directly to the beach.

The guest areas are very impressive and well looked after.
Bars, restaurants and lounges offer a wide variety of drinks and cuisine.
There are so many options but always something available for all tastes.

Staff are very friendly and helpful, and complement the whole experince.
Meals and drinks are available almost all day, from breakfast to whe the main bar closes at 1 in the morning, you can get whatever you need at one of the bars or restaurants that is open.

There are many activities that can be undertaken. from just snorkling in the house reef (equipment is provided) to taking excursions, like fishing trips, snorkling adventures or sunset cruises. watersports are available (motorized and non motorized) and many others like a gym, tennis courts, beach volleyball, billiards and much more.

Shops are also provided on the island, with a wide variety.
Even a clinic with a very friendly doctor is available.

Weather was very favourable, sunny and hot. occasionaly a shower, but it was the time of the year.

Overall, Lily Beach is a paradise with so much to offer, for every sort of personality, you just have to go out and do it. Staff will help and are very knowledgable.

Very good hotel for families with children. If your child is from 1-12 years old you can easily go snorkeling or diving while they can stay in perfect kids club! Teacher from Philippines is very kind to children. They go to collect shells, crabs and they actually have very nice program for every day) The food is very nice you can choose whatever you want. Shops are very expensive so dont think that you can buy T-shirt or hat or sun creame. It is better to buy it in airport. be careful with your tickets because if the weather will be bad you can't use seaplane.
