We have chosen W retreat and SPA to experience the W brand outside key City in the world and have to be honest they have just exced our expectations. The Hotel is very charming, the island has a good coral reef and teh Villas are amazing... Good thing about the W is that despite the difficult situation all over the Hotels in the world thay have kept the standards and the service on a high level.
The Restaurants have beautiful concepts and if you are a real 5 star client you would enjoy ..i completely disagree with other comments previously posted....meaning it is obvious that is a bit expensive , but do not forget you are inn the middle of the Indian Ocean and of course would be more expensive than your pub back home! If you are expecting free drinks, stay home or go to a camping hotel
Our Beach Villa number 111 it's just amazing, very cosy decor, modern but warm at the same time..the Beach is the best you can think of and the plounge pool is very relaxing.
We are a W hotel fan an we will stick to it. Luxury, design, ambience and funky service.
Sorry for other guests that enjoy cheap hotels with free drinks. Honest opinion

After a long journey we arrived in their lounge area at 8am for a 9-45 seaplane to the resort only to be told at 10 that we had to wait for more passenegers who turned out to staying on 2 other islands and we were the last drop-off so finally arrived at the W at 11-45 ,when i informed the manager of our frustration at the delay he blamed the air taxi company but said he would look into it, which was never forthcoming,
The photo they take of you at Male which is supposed to be in your room on arrival, they gave us on departure,
They refer to you by your christian names which I have no problem with but it is awkward to get to know the staff as they dont wear name badges, I spoke to the manager about this on departure and he said that it wasnt the W way but other guests had also mentioned this as a problem, perhaps they should listen to guests more than their PR people,
Be aware that everything is subject to a 10% service charge , no problem with this in relation to food and drink but another $20 on a massage that is already expensive seems to be taking things a little too far,.
The food is fairly average and overpriced and complicated in Fire, guests were milling around not quite sure what to do.probably the worst omelette at breakfast I have had in a good hotel, flat as a pancake and tastless.
We have stayed extensively in the Maldives at the top-end and this is by far the worst in terms of value for money,
The beach villa we had was in need of a external spruce up, the sunbed mattresses are grubby and the beach cleaning staff seemed to want to use our side path as a short cut to the beach with their wheelbarrows!, not what I would call secluded.
The "free" water in the room is that cheap bottled tap water make by Coke.
No welcome cocktail party or events where guests could mix and meet each other, again apparently this is not the W way!. not so much as single free drink from this hotel.
It felt like they were out to extract every last cent from you, this is where they excel in spades.
If you want to be treated well and come away feeling that the money yu have spent has been worth it then either go to Huvafen Fushi or Hilton Rangali both have got the whole experience off to a fine art. lets hope they sort out the difference between branding and customer service and value for money as it is a lovely island and with the right balance could be very good but not right now.

atleast they managed to get the World Cup in time just, so one positive to mention.

My stay for a honeymoon was for 5days at a beach oasis which we really liked. It had the full slush for privacy as tree and greenery made a beautiful surrounding. I didn't have a diving license neither did my wife and we really didn't need it as snorkeling just did the job perfectly. I think the resort is generous as it offered food stations all over the island for free (Ice creams cokes etc.) The funkiness in the hotel just made it stand out as the naming of restaurants and places ( like Fish, Fire, Kitchen, below 15m wet etc.)

Down under the hotel water sport facility could do a better service as they weren't keen to work. We wanted to do some water sport though the boat was out for service for a week. I don't know how big the boat to take a week to repair.

I didn't really think the Whatever/Whenever service worked perfectly as much as I wanted it now. There is a certain rules and terms as you need to inform them earlier like having a private BBQ on the porch needs 4hours.

WOW!!! This word covers everything about the W Retreat.. The attention to personal service is remarkable. It is as if you are the only couple on the island that the multitude of staff have to look after. I can't imagine the Queen of England being treated any better than we were.......seriously. And we have travelled extensively and stayed in outstanding places before but there is nothing like the "W".

It all starts when you are taken to the W Retreat (its own) waiting lounge at the seaplane terminal at Male and the staff check you in at this point so that there is no delay in getting to your room on the island. You are asked how you would like the staff on the island to address you during your stay. You then have your photo taken which is already enlarged and framed and and sitting on your coffee table in your villa on the island by the time you arrive 45minutes later!!!! When you arrive at the island the management team are on the jetty waving and greet you by your (advised) names as if they have known your for years (and recognise you at first sight.....from the photo being emailed earlier I presume). As if this isn't impressive enough all of the staff members with whom you come into contact in the restaurants and bars and room service know you at first sight and call you by name and do it with a sincere and relaxed smile!!!!!!

My husband and I were upgraded to an ocean oasis (over water villa) which was exquisite. A beautiful coral reef just off our deck assured us of great snorkelling any time if we didn't (which we did) want to go to the other side of the island (about 300metres away) to snorkell on the amazing house reef. We have scuba dived and snorkelled the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and were blown away by the spectacular sea life on this reef. The best we have ever seen!! Every day we swam with several turtles and reef sharks (easy going so don't be put off), stunning spotted eagle rays and an abundance of fish and coral that meant you saw something different every time you snorkelled.

You don't need to pack your bags with hairdryers and bathroom products as all of this is provided and plenty of it. The rooms are serviced twice a day which includes fresh towels both times, bathrooms cleaned each time, bed making or turning down, candles lit in the evening and a delicious treat left each day. We always looked forward to those.

The plunge pools lit up by little star lights on the pool floor at night, next to the magnificent circular outdoor bed helped set the romantic atmosphere as we watched the stunning sunset while sipping wine and then lay down to admire the starlit sky before our leisurely stroll to dinner each evening.

Which brings me to the food!!!!!! Fish is the name of the resorts "fancy" seafood restaurant and is a must. The seafood is cooked to perfection and the sauces or accompaniments they are served which are appealing to the eye as well as tantalising to the taste. The bonus at Fish, as if the meals your order are not enough, are the extra "treats" provided by the restaurant like the dips and bread (which change each night), then the little taste sensation that chef cooks as a palate teaser before your entree arrives and then the plate of chocolates and chilled mulled wine "shooters" that follow after your main. Very special indeed. You should have a drink at the Sip bar next to Fish before you dine and at sunset as it is located to take full advantage of the magnificent sunsets. If there is a drink that isn't on their list just ask them to make it........they will.......whatever, whenever you want it. Hence the "W". The other restaurants, Fire and the Kitchen we found to be of equal high standard when it came to the quality of the food and the service provided.

"W" (for whatever/whenever) staff stand by that logo and they deliver. This and the amazing personal service is what makes this resort special and like no other. My husband does not de-stress easily but was calm within minutes of arrival and remained so for the duration. In fact, a week later, even though he is back at his stressful job he is still calm and happy. It doesn't get better than that.

Nobody shoud miss the "W Retreat" experience so if you can.....go....SOON!!!

We just got back from 7 days in W Retreat & Spa. It´s a classic location-location-location hotel, because its all about the island and the reef, but the service it´s absent. We stayed in Ocean and Beach Oasis, the rooms are very nice and well equiped.
The rooms all cost the same but you may be lucky and get a good room or not… Our Beach retreat (#103) was too close to the seaplane landing zone and had very serious privacy issues: no vegetation on the sides so the neighbours and everybody walking in the path could see us in our plunge pool or deck. On the other side, there was so much vegetation on the front (Beach side) that we couln´t see the Beach from the room!
We also had problem with the hot water during 2 days
The whatever/wherever service is a lie. The whatever/wherever team just smile at you but give not service at all. They don´t solve any issues, even the most simple ones… or propose activities, or inform about the hotel or the activities, they don´t even remember your name or the room number you are staying in. The same happens with the rest of the staff, at our last day they were still asking our room number and the hotel was 50% occupied!! Most of the staff is bad predisponed.
The Beach staff don´t even give towels when you arrive at the Beach, no mention of bar service or anybody asking if you want to order something to drink or eat. The Beach or the Beach chairs are not cleaned either after being used by other guests.
The watersports team doesn´t exist either, they just doesn´t want to work or give you any service, always answering thay there is no wind if you want to windsurf or do the catamaran. They make everything so complicated that it makes you feel that they doesn´t want you to do or use anything. It surprised me and my husband that nobody controlled them and their performance because they were all day lying or ussing the hotel equipment for their own enjoyment!
The restaurants are nice but the food isn´t. We tried all..Kitchen has nice pizzas and breakfast, but the rest of its food is not good and its complicated cuisine…Fish is good but without variety, and Fire is too expensive for what it offers. At the last days we were begging for a simple pasta or grill meat with salad!! Besides, going back to the whatever/whenever service, it doens´t make posible for example if you want to have a pizza at the bar…you have to go to your room and ask for room service…¿?
The Spa is too small and always busy, or that is what they try to sell…because we never had the chance in 7 days to try anything or even see the treatment rooms..
If you like to feel special or at least surprised each day with the service and hotel proposal, this is not the place for your.

I know one or two things about hotels and I promise to write this review in as fair and objective a manner I can so that anyone thinking of going to the W Maldives knows what to expect.

On the positive side, the resort is beautiful, the design, FF&E, and overall atmosphere is very beautiful, and as an added bonus the surrounding coral reef around the island is stunning (just remember to sunblock your back and calves when snorkeling ;) a lesson i learned the hard way!) we saw more marine life snorkeling around the island than all of our other dives combined!

Also, the staff which are mainly from the Maldives and Sri Lanka, are warm, kind and very polite, so any following criticism is not targeted at them, but rather at the very poor training and standards which the management holds them to.

Now for the negative. I want to start with rooms and housekeeping, because the first part of the experience is getting settled into the room. The bed, floor and toilets were clean. everything else was filthy, tables, counter tops, cloth hangers, light switches, remotes, phones and pretty much all other surfaces and devices were either sticky or dusty or dirty. The room is cleaned in a very fast and haphazard approach, with seemingly no inspection before arrival, and for the rate we're paying, it should be bang on spotless, this was the first sign of sloppy management. Also the water villas have AC units with compressors that are so loud you can't have a moment of pure silence, a highly sought after natural resource in the Maldives!

Next, the service of the staff and attentiveness is very bad. The hotel seems to focus on silly perks like Whatever Whenever, I kept thinking: how about basic service now maybe? I mean spare us the good morning and good evening welcome mats, and the superficial wave hello when you arrive in the seaplane, and maybe find me a waiter that remembers I exist, or orders that are correct, or bills that are accurate, or good food.

which brings my to the next, and most serious issue. The food is way below standard. I'm sorry but for a four star resort on some cheap beach destination, it would be acceptable but not on a tho thousand dollar average room night in one of the most pristine places in the world... frankly they should be embarrassed to serve that crap. Unless the head chef cooks it himself, it sucks, and even then, he's not that much of hot shot. We had to stick to basics, grilled meat, and a salad, and still, when then orders came out they were often wrong, and the food was at best, average, nothing I can't do in my own backyard any day of the week (because trust me if you go for anything elaborate, you'll be highly disappointed - the skill just isn't there period)

Finally the spa treatments were below average, and as a spa experience, this place also failed to impress once again, with the relaxation area buzzing with the AC compressor sounds again.

Overall I had a great trip, thanks to the natural beauty, resort design, and the padi center, as well as a positive attitude and a great companion, but anyplace can get away that, so I couldn't help but feel disappointed and very unfairly charged for this experience, because the hotel management simply did not deliver anything memorable besides the bill, which I would have been more than happy to spend at another resort.

I highly suggest people go to the One and Only, Four Seasons, Huvafen Fushi or a unique boutique resort instead of the W, and spend your money where it's more deserving.

Really it is best of the best of all, no matter it is the Island, the hotel, the staffs, the services, the facility , food and entertainment ! Everything is well thoughts and cater for your need and best comfort. It is very detail that you would just WOW WOW WOW. My husband is very fussy on hotels and he has thumbs up for this one : D We like the lagoon oasis a lot. I think everyone should go to Maldives at last once in their life. And W is really a very good choice. We went around Easter, so it is not peak and it is half the price of Xmas ($4K). Easter has nice weather too. xxx
