We just came back from this paradise - it was our first time in Maldives and we couldn’t have been more satisfied with it.
We stayed 11 nights from 8th January - the weather was absolutely pleasant (around the same temperature every day, I guess around 30 degrees Celsius), it rained only once for a very short time after dark, most days it was a little bit windy (perfectly suitable for kiting).
Be careful of the time change compared to Male (nobody told us and we didn’t notice), it is +1 hour in Fihalhohi compared to Male time. It can easily happen that you will miss your lunch if you don’t know about it.
After our arrival, we were greeted by the staff with a coconut drink and soon given our rooms. We couldn’t choose the room as the resort was full - we were given comfort room no. 6 which happened to be one of the best. Rooms 1-40 were closest to the beach, rooms 86-138 were postioned on the part of the island where the beach was almost non-existent. Anyhow, you can move your sunbed wherever you like so I don’t think this is an issue.
The rooms are clean and nice with a small porch in front, there is essentially everything you need (air conditioning, refridgerator) excl. TV or wifi. Rooms were cleaned twice a day which was just perfect for us.
We had full board (for the price of half board as an early booking advantage), the food was really delicious and you could always pick something that resembled European food (less spices, fish & chips, hamburgers) - which I absolutely don’t recommend as the local food was just amazing! We were never hungry and we didn’t need to buy any more food in the beach bar or elsewhere. Every dinner had a different theme - e.g. when in Rome, French cuisine, Chinese, etc. ...and the passion fruit was yummy J
Drinks were overpriced therefore we drank mostly mineral water. 10% service charge + 8% tax were applied on everything starting from drinks and ending with services provided by water sports centre. Mineral water 1.5l bottle for 3,50 USD (+18%), small beer 5 USD (+18%), cocktail 10 USD (+18%). On the other hand, we didn’t need to buy much mineral water as black tea and coffee were always provided in the restaurant and fruit juices were also available for breakfast.
Tip for you: Once you arrive in Male, you can buy some mineral water directly at the airport - we bought 5 bottles of 1.5l mineral water, 2 USD each.
Beach + house reef
The beach was absolutely fabulous, white sand everywhere. Even though the resort was full, the beach was peaceful and the people evenly scattered around the island. We had 3 sunbeds at our disposal, we also took lilos (just in case the sunbeds are too hard to lie on) but we never used them. The house reef was just a few meters from the beach and it was purely beautiful, full of various ocean species, though spotting a turtle was mere luck. Don’t go to this island without snorkeling equipment, missing the underwater beauty would be a big mistake.
We were on 2 trips - snorkeling safari organized by the resort (22 USD + charges) and manta & dolphin spotting organized by water sports centre (50 USD + charges). There were other trips too (Male excursion 45 USD + charges, Island hopping, shopping at Guraidhoo etc.). Snorkeling safari was nice but the 3 places we visited were not as nice as Fihalhohi house reef. We were promised to see turtles, I spotted one and bragged about it to the guide, his reaction was: “You saw a turtle? Really? Here?” So I wouldn’t really have high hopes... Manta & dolphin trip was nice, we were lucky to spot some mantas from the boat, however, not that lucky to swim with them (on the other hand, there were guests who had not even seen them...). Dolphins were glorious, we saw at least hundred of them.
Water sports centre was, in my opinion, overpriced, guests mostly used them for manta&dolpin trips - otherwise we haven’t seen anyone doing any water sports (guess because of their prices) except diving.
Wifi or internet in PC room was available only in the reception area and fisherman’s bar for 5 USD (+ charges) for 30 min or 8 USD (+ charges) for 1 hour.
Be careful to pack a repellent and after-bite ointment as you can easily become a target of mosquitoes (esp. after dark). I was badly bitten the first night which made my few following days a bit difficult.
There was always an evening program starting at 9.30 p.m. in the fisherman’s bar, though for a couple in late twenties, the entertainment was pretty dull. We usually played table tennis, table football in the play room behind the reception. If you are an active person, better pack something to keep you busy.
There is a small souvenir shop on the island where you can buy Maldives handpainted t-shirts (20-30 USD + tax), magnets, etc.
The staff on the island is very friendly, hardworking and useful, we left them some tip money (better leave it with the staff then with the management for the overpriced drinks). They usually work far far away from their families they see once per 2 years or so, however, they never complain.
You are supposed to settle your bill before your departure - be careful to check it thoroughly, we found two bills that we didn’t make in the amount of ca 25 USD.
All in all, it was an almost perfect vacation worth every euro spent. Just pack few clothes, flip flops (you may not need them, most of the people were barefoot all the time), suncream + medicine and snorkeling equipment and enjoy!
