“More than we expected...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

We just came back from this paradise - it was our first time in Maldives and we couldn’t have been more satisfied with it.
We stayed 11 nights from 8th January - the weather was absolutely pleasant (around the same temperature every day, I guess around 30 degrees Celsius), it rained only once for a very short time after dark, most days it was a little bit windy (perfectly suitable for kiting).
Be careful of the time change compared to Male (nobody told us and we didn’t notice), it is +1 hour in Fihalhohi compared to Male time. It can easily happen that you will miss your lunch if you don’t know about it.
After our arrival, we were greeted by the staff with a coconut drink and soon given our rooms. We couldn’t choose the room as the resort was full - we were given comfort room no. 6 which happened to be one of the best. Rooms 1-40 were closest to the beach, rooms 86-138 were postioned on the part of the island where the beach was almost non-existent. Anyhow, you can move your sunbed wherever you like so I don’t think this is an issue.
The rooms are clean and nice with a small porch in front, there is essentially everything you need (air conditioning, refridgerator) excl. TV or wifi. Rooms were cleaned twice a day which was just perfect for us.
We had full board (for the price of half board as an early booking advantage), the food was really delicious and you could always pick something that resembled European food (less spices, fish & chips, hamburgers) - which I absolutely don’t recommend as the local food was just amazing! We were never hungry and we didn’t need to buy any more food in the beach bar or elsewhere. Every dinner had a different theme - e.g. when in Rome, French cuisine, Chinese, etc. ...and the passion fruit was yummy J
Drinks were overpriced therefore we drank mostly mineral water. 10% service charge + 8% tax were applied on everything starting from drinks and ending with services provided by water sports centre. Mineral water 1.5l bottle for 3,50 USD (+18%), small beer 5 USD (+18%), cocktail 10 USD (+18%). On the other hand, we didn’t need to buy much mineral water as black tea and coffee were always provided in the restaurant and fruit juices were also available for breakfast.
Tip for you: Once you arrive in Male, you can buy some mineral water directly at the airport - we bought 5 bottles of 1.5l mineral water, 2 USD each.
Beach + house reef
The beach was absolutely fabulous, white sand everywhere. Even though the resort was full, the beach was peaceful and the people evenly scattered around the island. We had 3 sunbeds at our disposal, we also took lilos (just in case the sunbeds are too hard to lie on) but we never used them. The house reef was just a few meters from the beach and it was purely beautiful, full of various ocean species, though spotting a turtle was mere luck. Don’t go to this island without snorkeling equipment, missing the underwater beauty would be a big mistake.
We were on 2 trips - snorkeling safari organized by the resort (22 USD + charges) and manta & dolphin spotting organized by water sports centre (50 USD + charges). There were other trips too (Male excursion 45 USD + charges, Island hopping, shopping at Guraidhoo etc.). Snorkeling safari was nice but the 3 places we visited were not as nice as Fihalhohi house reef. We were promised to see turtles, I spotted one and bragged about it to the guide, his reaction was: “You saw a turtle? Really? Here?” So I wouldn’t really have high hopes... Manta & dolphin trip was nice, we were lucky to spot some mantas from the boat, however, not that lucky to swim with them (on the other hand, there were guests who had not even seen them...). Dolphins were glorious, we saw at least hundred of them.
Water sports centre was, in my opinion, overpriced, guests mostly used them for manta&dolpin trips - otherwise we haven’t seen anyone doing any water sports (guess because of their prices) except diving.
Wifi or internet in PC room was available only in the reception area and fisherman’s bar for 5 USD (+ charges) for 30 min or 8 USD (+ charges) for 1 hour.
Be careful to pack a repellent and after-bite ointment as you can easily become a target of mosquitoes (esp. after dark). I was badly bitten the first night which made my few following days a bit difficult.
There was always an evening program starting at 9.30 p.m. in the fisherman’s bar, though for a couple in late twenties, the entertainment was pretty dull. We usually played table tennis, table football in the play room behind the reception. If you are an active person, better pack something to keep you busy.
There is a small souvenir shop on the island where you can buy Maldives handpainted t-shirts (20-30 USD + tax), magnets, etc.
The staff on the island is very friendly, hardworking and useful, we left them some tip money (better leave it with the staff then with the management for the overpriced drinks). They usually work far far away from their families they see once per 2 years or so, however, they never complain.
You are supposed to settle your bill before your departure - be careful to check it thoroughly, we found two bills that we didn’t make in the amount of ca 25 USD.

All in all, it was an almost perfect vacation worth every euro spent. Just pack few clothes, flip flops (you may not need them, most of the people were barefoot all the time), suncream + medicine and snorkeling equipment and enjoy!

We have just returned from our third visit to Fiha (8th trip to Maldives) and have already booked for New Year 2013/2014.

We both had a fantastic time as we always do and made some lovely friends that helped to make our holiday even more enjoyable.

However, after reading some of the reviews on this site I sometimes wonder if I have been to the same island.

I appreciate there are finicky eaters amongst us, but if people cannot find something to satisfy their tastes from the food on offer …then maybe they should stay home. There is plenty of variety. The Staff are always willing to help in the case of food allergies or special dietary needs. I myself have a severe allergy to pineapple and the chef chopping and serving the fresh fruit in the dining room would always send out to the kitchen to make sure that some fresh papaya was prepared with a separate knife well away from any pineapple and they were always ready to tell me if there was pineapple in a recipe when it was not immediately obvious.

The Gala Dinners at Christmas and New Year have SO much choice of well cooked and beautifully presented food. I think people forget that all produce has to be shipped in first from other countries then distributed from Male by supply boats. I despair at the tourists who expect 5* cuisine when they are visiting a tiny island in the Indian Ocean and paying 3* prices.

I cannot fault Fiha…the staff: from Gardener to Room-Boy to Waiter to Office Staff are all helpful and polite. If you encounter a rude staff member…maybe you should question your own attitude towards them or simply remember that everyone can have an ‘off’ day.

The new Dive Centre Staff have quickly achieved an excellent standard and many of the changes they have implemented have improved the quality and standard of service being offered.

I would recommend Fiha to anyone… but please don’t go with unrealistic expectations. Yes, there are mosquito’s so take repellent and bite cream, there is internet connection but you pay extra for it, and the shop can be expensive on certain items compared to our prices but remember many of the products have all had to be imported.

Other than that….remember to relax, smile and enjoy being in Paradise.

Our 4th year at Fihalhohi and have just returned from there on 14th Jan 2013. This year we upgraded to a water bungalow which made it a whole different holiday, if for no other reason than sitting on the desk and watching some fantastic sunsets. We also couldn't help but notice that quality of the food had increased, with plenty of fresh fish, delicious curries and and as always ,a great choice.
It was the first time I had dived with with new team at Aeolus Dive. Professionally managed by Winnie & Issi and for the majority of my 17 dives, in the very capable hands of 'Hucky' our Dive Master / Guide, who not only gave me some very good advise, but all of us divers informative briefings in both English & German on the site we were about to explore. So overall, a great experience of both Fihalhohi Island Resort & Aeolus Dive and yes, we're booked for December 2013

We have just returned from a two week stay here and had a fantastic holiday. The island is beautiful and the house reef amazing! Upon arrival we were greeted with a cold drink and shown quickly to our room, it was very spacious with a lovely big bed, I would say however the bathroom was a little tired. We stayed over Christmas and felt the staff put in an enormous effect to make it special and there were alot of events arranged for people to join in if they wished. Food was good but could have been a little more varied, Drinks were reasonably priced for the Maldives, all in all we had no complaints and would love to return in the future.

We spent ten days and just returned (04 Jan 2013) together with three kids.
Very good resort for a family with kids. Stayed in two comfort rooms. Rooms are spacious but a bit dark and need more fresh air.

Our second floor neighbours were very sensitive to doors slamming too and they warned us because of kids. Too much mosquito bytes. Got too many bits. Had mosquito repellent but that animals find a small point to het through your skin.

Island is generally very silent. No tv, no internet, no telephone... very good for a good relax. Also tried spa. Massage was very good. After the couple discount we payed 185 usd and it is much for 60 minutes.

House reef excellent. Made snorkeling with family every day and seen all kind of fishes and even sea turtle. Impressed with house reef.

Oh, diving center: Before going to Fihalhohi; read diving center is not good, service was bad, etc. After seeing and diving with Aeolus Diving Center I must admit I am impressed with service, professionalism and team play. All very professional, experienced and very helpful. Planned to make my advanced open water divings but had bad luck and got flu just before arrive. Did only two dives and no more because of flu and sea sickness. My 16 years old son also tried discover scuba dive and he was very happy with it.
Dive center manager Winnie, vice manager Issi, Instructors Haki, Udo, Erna and Daniel makes great job there. Definitely advice diving there (didn't have any discount ;) ).

Definitely give a try to snorkeling in this island. Instead of renting there, buy your snorkel set before.

Food is not that impressive. May be we look for delicious Middle Eastern food, but it is average or can say poor. Fruit was nice. We paid 80 USD per person for new year eve programme incl. food. Food was like everyday and feel we are cheated.

Island is very suitable for pictures with coconut trees and palm trees. So be ready for nice pictures. Sun sets are magnificient.

For us 10 days was a bit much. 7-8 days is ok.

Take your flippers, take your mosquito repellent, take your sun screens. You got burn even when it is cloudy.

And enjoy the silence.

Stars are very beautiful and bright when it is not full moon...

Very good swimming, snorkeling and romantic evenings waiting for you...

Room Tip: Definitely North side better

we have just come back from Fihalhohi Island resort and have mainly warm words to say. we stayed at a water bungalow which was amazing. very clean, good aircondition, and the pleasure of sitting at evenning watching the sea and the fish- absolute paradise. the house reef is very accesible with lots of fish but very few soft colorful corals. a word to the manegement- you should put a big sign warnning people not to touch or to step on the corals. we saw some broken corals and people walking over the coral table.
the sand on the beach is clean and white and the water clear and warm. the buffet style restaurant is good. i am a vegetarian and used to have very little choice' but this time it was different, and food is plentiful and tasty.
in my opinion the gem of the island is its diving club. very professional, very good service with a lot of attention to safety and very friendly. there are enough dive sites around to keep a diver busy for 2 weeks. i thourouly enjoyed the diving.
all in all for a reasonable price you can have a very nice holiday. i certainly recommend the island to divers and non divers alike

Room Tip: if you can' choose a water bungalow or upgrade when you reach the island

My husband and I have recently returned from a wonderful 2 week holiday to Fihalhohi resort and had the most amazing time.

The island is circular and we managed to snorkell all the way round and has a wonderful house reef which is full of life. You can see all manner of fish life, rays, sharks, tuna and octopus. We stayed in one of the water bungalows which was a delight, spacious, well maintained and furnished, tea coffee facilities, air con, bath with a view over looking the sea. There is also a large private sun deck, table and chairs and steps into the water.

Our main aim was to relax, chill out and scuba dive and we certainly managed all three. I had seen a negative review about the dive centre so was a little apprehensive but my fears soon disappeared within about 10 mins of booking into the dive centre. The dive centre manager Winnie was on hand and was efficient, helpful, informative and huge fun making the booking process easy. The dive centre has brand new equipment which is well maintained, nitrox is available, boxes and storage for your dive gear if you have your own which is secure, classrooms for courses. Dive sites were very varied classed from easy to advanced with dhoni boats for 20 divers but never felt overcrowded. The dive team has good knowledge of sites, give briefings on each dive site before every dive and the boat crew will help you should you need it. It was an absolute pleasure to dive with these lovely people and although they haven't been there very long they run a tight ship with exceptional professionalism and we look forward to diving with them in the future.

The food was great and varied daily with great service form all the waiters especially our waiter Usama who was an absolute gem with a wicked sense of humour and great English. We visited the spa on numerous occasions and each time was exceptional the girls are amazing with very strong hands for such petite ladies, we can definite recommend the massages.

Many people have commented that this island is a " budget resort" but that's certainly not the experience we had and this was our fourth visit to the Maldives ( diff islands) and will definitely be returning again in the future.

Many thanks to all the staff who made our holiday so wonderful but especially the dive team Winne, Hucky, Erna and all the team keep up the good work and hopefully see you next year.
Thanks Alan& Kathy( Southampton.)
