“Little piece of heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2014

We stayed at Gangehi for 12 nights having been to Constance Moofushi and Reethi Beach before.

This island was for us the perfect maldivian experience.

For us snorkeling is very important and the snorkeling options are excellent and although I had two encounters with an aggressive trigger fish we saw some amazing sights and the coral garden is simply beautiful.

The island is very quiet and laid back but with everything you need to get away from it all. We had two sessions at the Spa and it was very good, there is also a library and gym if you need it.

The food was amazing, the two italian chefs with the help of the local chefs produces some outstanding dishes, the chef responsible for the desserts is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet and his creations are simply wonderful! Our waiter Nadheem was also outstanding.

We stayed in a club room and it was perfect for us. The beach and your numbered loungers are a minute's walk away and the room was very comfortable appointed and more importantly affordable.

The biggest asset of Gangehi is the wonderful staff. Everyone is friendly, helpful and professional and made us feel very special.

We had a wonderful holiday and this is one island we will happily return to.

We stayed a week in Gangehi in November 2013. Upon our arrival (after 24 hours of traveling) we were expected to wait in reception with the other new guests and pay our bill. Since the island is remote communications links are not reliable and we had some fussing with various credit cards before payments went through and we were free to go to our bungalow. Not the best of welcomes.

The island is small and intimate and attracts mostly couples of varying ages and small families. It's currently managed by Italians who are friendly and provide a range of activities and evening entertainment. the island appears to be efficiently run and staff are friendly and helpful.

Our bungalow (number 1) was spacious with 2 bedrooms, each with en suite bathroom and 2 decks. The bathroom is great with a walk in rain shower. Despite being the closest bungalow to the reception area it was rather private and surrounded by tropical plants.

One of the outside airco units was quite noisy (I struggled to sleep) and one of the interior units dripped water on the floor. The hotel staff were quick to respond and repair the unit and clean the room.

The buffet style restaurant offers a variety of Italian anti-pasta's and dishes as well as deliciuos local Maldivian curries and fish dishes. I really enjoyed the fresh fish as well as the ice creams (some very creative flavours). We opted for an all inclusive (meals only) however you're still expected to pay for drinks during lunch and dinner.

I was sent a spa menu via email before my trip and I was looking forward to a few treatments but found out upon arrival that they were no longer on offer - much to my disappointment. The spa treatments I did have were quite average.

The dive shop is run by a group of friendly Italian ladies and if you're a first time diver or nervous I'd recommend doing a discover scuba with one of the ladies as they are very patient teachers.

Highlights of our stay - watching baby reef sharks in the shallows during breakfast, the organised snorkelling trip and the free yoga lessons on the deck overlooking the sea and best of all the sun, sand and coral reef. Oh and being able to go barefoot all the time : )

It’s been a couple of days only that we came back from Gangehi Island. This was our second time in Maldives, in Nord Male atoll as well. We’ve chosen this island in the last moment, mostly for its reasonable value-for-money and great feedbacks left by customers.

The resort has met our expectations. Our stay was great and we would recommend it definitely! In a couple of words pluses would be: Quality of food and staff at restaurant, Warm Italian staff (at the Diving center as well), Local reef (beware I don’t have that much xp to compare), Island configuration (beware this is small!). Minuses would also be: Management implication and a lack of animations.

The house reef was stunning and absolutely nice! We saw there a manta, couple of turtles and obviously plenty of different fishes. The reef was nicer that in Kuramathi island, even though we almost see any reef sharks (too bad). The configuration allows us to spend many time snorkeling in safety conditions. One comment regarding Male Atoll (not especially this island): from my xp, corals and reef were much nicer in Philippines, but Maldives cannot be compared with the amount of life and fishes: this is astonishing!
Coming to the Albatros diving center now: A bid thank to Domi, who was very warm and professional, with a perfect French btw. All Italian divers were very kind and the material in very good condition. Prices I cannot nudged but I would said fair for the Maldives. Dives were great. Again I have better memories in Philippines but this is not because of the diving center, of course!

We have tested the first evening the “A la carte” restaurant… We were alone and I keep an unforgettable experience. The lobster we had was awesome, and the local staff very nice. We then choose to ‘Full board’ option and have tried the buffet the following day for lunch. This was so great that we finally stray with it for the all week. The buffet is managed by 2 Italian cookers and a couple of local cookers as well. The food was absolutely awesome! They make a great effort to propose original things, always with this Italian spirit that we all like! And what about the desserts? Even in top-luxury islands I am sure you won’t find better! Quality of ingredients, tastes… Awesome! (only the fruits were so-so – same for cocktails at the bar).

Here we had a couple of minor examples were we did not find a strong management in place. It seems that a leadership was missing somewhere. Some examples: You want to know all activities organized day to day and all possibilities at your disposition: help yourself because nobody will show it to you. The spa? We didn’t came because from the pictures it seems that only men were doing massages (was it the case? I don’t know). Also we had to ask management not to leave the local staff playing Volley-ball from 11 to 12pm (very noisy when the pitch is right behind)…. This is so obvious that they better play at 5pm and not at night, how come should a customer complain about that? Last example: the late check-out. It took us some nerves to finally understand whether it was possible and when our plane would finally leave the island. It seems that you always have to complain and ask again and again to be understood!
Maybe a European responsible at management side would have avoid some of this miscomprehension, and would gain to create kind of a binder between all the nice staff we have for diving, food or animation. Also regarding animations, there are some and they are ok. It is just that people looking for lot of stuffs to do after dinner might be disappointed (this was not our case!)

A big thanks to the doctor in the island! It was great to see that illness is not treated as a business. For 15 euros only I’ve been followed by the doctor during all my stay, medicine included, regarding an ear infection. This is much more than fair! (iIn comparison I had to pay 60€ in another island only for a consultation).
Coming to the room itself to conclude: We had a bungalow on the beach. It was large and comfortable, just a couple of meters from the sea. Bungalows are not too close from each others, as it could be in some other islands (mainly with water villas), and privacy is well respected. We would have expected a better bathroom accommodation (lack of light, a bit used) as well as a more effective cleaning service, but it was great is the overall!

We spent one week on Gangehi Island in December 2013. The island is embedded in a beautiful (though partly dead) lagoon. The sand "tongue" on the west side of the island is awesome for a relaxed walk during sunset hours.

We had beach bungalow 14 - which is positioned perfectly. The beach in this part of the island is beautiful and you are (often) protected from wind during this time of the year.

Food is great with focus on different kind of fish meals. Breakfast just misses a bit of variety. You can have your omelette prepared fresh, but you just have the choice of 4 ingredients .. but it was fine enough.

Lunch and dinner are quite cool - sometimes literally "cool" (temperature of rice as an example)

Take advantage of the offered excursions - it's worth it! On our last day we did a "Manta Check" - and we really came accross a "family" of 5 Mantas - what a snorkeling experience!

Staff is smiling most of the time, but sometimes you can't tell the difference between honest friendliness or the hope for more tips.

Chef cook was nice, as he prepared special meals for my fiancé who suffers from several food intolerances.

Formerly exclusively Italian, Gangehi Island Resort has still an "Italian flavor". Sometimes the Italian staff acts a bit rude or arrogant towards international tourists. Now under Swiss management, people from different countries come to visit Gangehi Island.

In general, we had a great time on Gangehi Island. If you go there, don't miss to watch the night sky (and I really mean night ... 03:00 - 05:00) ... it was just amazing!

Room Tip: Check beach bungalows 13,14,15,16

Gangehi is a samll island with few activities which can be scary for some but don't be! You will be never bored! We stayed 9 days and I would be very happy to stay a month!
The food is just Incredible (Matteo & Matteo, the cook, are from Italy, use only fresh products and condiments from Italy) the prices are VERY REASONABLE which is rare in Maldives (25€ for excursions, 5€ a cocktail etc...) but I advice to go for all inclusive.
The beach is a paradise (and we met people there who went to 4 or 5 resorts before and said it was the most beautiful beach)

Water villas are worth it, just avoid the water villa 30 (on the beach not water since the Tsunami) and the beach villa 2 (next to the diving center which start the boat at 6am)
They clean your room perfectly twice a day and change beds and towels every time.
The staff is nice, some communications issues but nothing which can disturb your holidays.

When you compare all prices in real luxury resorts, this one is really the best in term of quality/price and the food is just INCREDIBLE!!!!!

Room Tip: Avoid water villa 30, beach villa 2. Go for deluxe water villa if you plan to stay on your private t...

My wife went to massage at the Ginger spa within the resort and being molested by an Indian male therapist during the massage.
The therapist touches her breast intentionally without my wife permission. I clarify with other therapist within the resort and found out that the massage that my wife taken shall not touches her breast.
We complaint this incident to the management, but they do not investigate and keep protecting their own staff.
We felt so helpless and file a police report once we reached Male. Hopefully the police will help and do not let this incident happen again in this beautiful country.

Gangehi, General Manager at Gangehi Island Resort, responded to this review, December 18, 2013
Ginger SPA at Gangehi Island Resort has a team of female and male professional therapists.
Our guests can choose if they prefer to be treated by a male or female therapist at the time of booking. Both are extremely professional and have been working with our Resort for many years to the satisfaction of all customers.
We have received the complaint of the guest and have immediately investigated the case: the Guest has booked a full body massage with a male therapist and the treatment was clearly described in the brochure.
The guest could have asked either to be treated by a lady therapist or she could have explained to the therapist who treated her that she didn’t want to be treated on her breasts. However the guest did not say anything until after one hour that the massage was completed. We insist that our therapists are extremely professional and would never do anything against the will of a guest.
We are extremely sorry if the guest was not happy with the massage, however we do think that there has not been any mishandling by the Resort’s staff.

Gangehi island resort is a smaller resort with a relaxed atmosphere. The garden villas are very pleasant and set in the trees close to the beach but more private than a beach villa. The room was large with a good bathroom, a/c and a private bathroom and an enormous comfortable bed.
The buffet breakfast was good. The large bar had comfortable seating and also deckchairs by the water for a relaxing evening drink. There is also a more expensive bar and a-la-carte restaurant by the over-water villas which we did not use.
The water here is very shallow so more adventurous swimming is done from the snorkeling day trip boats available at the resort.
There is wi-fi in reception and the bar, plus a PC in the Library which is faster. There are many books in Italian in the Library and a very restricted selection in English, French, Spanish and Russian, for whiling away the hours.
We only stayed 4 nights (our booking) but many guests were there for a week or two. A sea plane was necessary to get there ($US420 return from Male) which adds to the cost for a short visit - otherwise the infrequent ferry to nearby islands takes many hours. Buffet dinner was 40 euros and lunch 30 euros which must also be factored into the cost.
Overall a pleasant, relaxing stay but (as true for most of the Maldives) not a cheap place to stay.
