“Beautiful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

I’ve just returned from a 7 night stay at Gangehi Island for my Honeymoon. This was my third time in the Maldives so I’ll try not to repeat myself from previous reviews.

The Good

The island is tiny and has a very exclusive feel.
The Staff, as if by magic, know who you are within 2 days of your arrival
The 2 Italian Chefs are fabulous! Food supplies in the Maldives will always be limited, but they did really well, turning out different flavours every day… and they do the best Pizza I’ve had since I visited Italy a few years ago. They will stand there and tell you exactly what the food is.
Do not miss the Desserts! The Dessert Chef made the best Profiteroles I have ever had!
The Deluxe Water Rooms are huge and comfortable. The beds are very comfortable and huge! Rashid the Waiter is fabulous and a credit to the Resort. If you are fortunate enough to have him as your waiter for your holiday you are very lucky. If I go back I will be requesting him.

The Bad

There are a lot of biting insects. I have never been bitten in the Maldives but I came away with 7 very itchy, very large, red bites. I have no idea what they were as I didn’t feel the bite, just the after effect. The Island does spray regularly so this isn’t really their fault.
The Reef isn’t great, however there are lots of very interesting sea creatures of all colours and sizes… we even had Dolphins come in very close to shore which was an amazing, albeit quick sight.
The Animation Team are horrendously annoying! When we were there it was a small noisy woman and a large, untidy looking man (I do not need to see his belly hanging below his shirt!). They are Italian so all activities are aimed at the Italian Guests, which excludes other Nationalities a little, but I didn’t go there for activities. They will approach you at almost every meal, whether you’re eating or not. This is extremely rude and distracting.

Recommendations/Advice

I recommend Deluxe rooms 38-41 as these are in a quieter spot than the others which are right next to the arrival jetty.
Remember to tip your waiter, Room Boy and Bar Staff if they provide a good service. Wages in the Maldives are lower than in Europe and tips are much appreciated by Staff. I guarantee if you tip a few dollars on the first night, you will get a better service. This may upset some people who don’t think tips should reflect service, but that’s just the way it is in the Maldives.
Avoid Male. I’m told that it has got very political in recent times and not the best place for Tourists. Rather, go and visit local Residential Islands as you will get a better feel for the lovely Local people. If you do decide to venture out of the Resort, Ladies, please cover up. Believe me, you will not like the stares if you don’t cover up and the Locals will appreciate it if you do.
If you’re in a deluxe room you probably won’t have sun loungers on your deck. This is only because you have designated loungers on the beach. You may ask for these to be taken to your deck. After all, why pay all the money for a private sun deck and then lie on the beach?
There is an all-inclusive option for drinks which you can pay for on arrival. This was 60 Euros per person per day. We took it, thinking it would be more cost effective, but in all honesty, I don’t think we drank enough to cover it. If you drink a lot of water/soft drinks during the day, it could be worth it, but you could end up losing money.

In Conclusion

I will return to Gangehi Island, I would stay in a regular water room instead of deluxe and I would take a bucket of Jungle Formula!

We booked a Club room which was not totally clear what is exactly meant by this type of room. Now we know that there are 4 rooms of this type located next to each other on the ground floor of a building. In the same building on the first floor the staff is accomodated. Room was acceptable although not the same as shown on the pictures (different furniture, no tv). We also did not have feeling of total cleanliness. On the other hand the island, the beach, the surrounding was spotless.

Gangehi shares it's idyllic setting with most other Maldives resorts, perfect sand, sea and sun... it is a truly tranquil and relaxing place. As expected the marine life is stunning and snorkelling here is almost an 'out of body' experience. The package we had was full-board and included food but not drinks. Water and fruit juice was provided at breakfast but had to be bought, at a cost of €3.50 for a 1.5 litre bottle, at every other meal. Cocktails were €8 and small bottle of Carlsberg €4. The biggest 'downside' to the visit was the extra hour added to local time by the resort, this is done to increase daylight hours to save electricity. I felt this was unfair as it added 1 hour to the jet-lag which, for example, means we were getting up one hour earlier on the day of departure. The only other 'niggles' were that the gym was poorly equipped and the that the Italian members of staff should stop singing in the bar at night. On that note, the whole resort is run by Italians and the majority of guests are too, that did not affect our experience. You should also expect to pay a premium price for all extras, 2 hours of night fishing for 2 people... €81 for example. Overall, almost paradise... a few small changes would give it 5 stars.

we have just returned from 12 glorious days on gangehi island. after a 35 minute seaplane transfer from male we arrived at our destination, a small perfectly formed maldivian island. this was our 4th visit to the maldives and by far the friendliest. the staff go out of their way to make your stay perfect.we stayed in a water villa which was very adequate but not posh, no tv,coffee/tea making facilities, no shower caps and cotton buds but clean and relaxing. the deluxe water villas have all the frills, but hey who needs a tv in the maldives.the water villas are situated on the sunset side of the island. the island is very pretty and has a fantastic sandbank which means you can walk for over 200 metres without getting your feet wet.the diving and snorkelling are excellent, we had 3 baby sharks swimming past our villa everyday along with stingrays, trigger fish and numerous others. the meals are buffet style and taken in the main restaurant and supervised by Andrea the italian chef who is passionate about his work.there is something for all tastes, lots of salads, vegetables, meat and fish dishes and the most delicious desserts.if you want a special dinner go to thari restaurant 150 metres out in the ocean. the restaurant staff are so friendly and i have to give a special mention to Rasheed our waiter who is wonderful, flaminia who takes care of daily stretching, yoga ,beach volley ball, aquafit , elisa who is the islands marine biologist who conducts the daily snorkelling trips around the island and herbert from the dive centre.the diving is excellent around the island.we were there for 12 days in october only 1 of which the sun did not shine. there is a small boutique, all the clothes are made by the resident tailors who will happily clone your clothes for you displaying the 'gangehi' designer label. gentlemen you are allowed in the restaurants in the evening with bermudas and bare feet which is not allowed in all the maldivian islands.if it's a chill out holiday on a friendly island why not give gangehi a try you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: water villas on sunset side of island 32-37, deluxe villas i recommend numbers 38-43 as 44+ do not h...

The resort really satisfied me and my wife. It was only 2 nights to enjoy the resort, too short to really enjoy the whole beauty. I really recommend my friends to enjoy also this resort, it is affordable, it is an excellent one!

If you are looking for a true Maldives escape then this is the place. It's truly beautiful, just visit their website gangehi.com . It's not part of a big hotel chain so don't expect 300 rooms and miles of beaches! Gangehi is a very small island, just 40 rooms each very special, and looked after by a close knit team that will become friends before the end of your stay. Holidays are a time for great scenery and relaxation - but I think also for great food and wine. The wine list here is very good, and very reasonably priced. I understand the chef chooses the wine himself and they bring it in just for this island. That brings me to one of the best parts - the chefs on this island are from Italy - so you will enjoy some really brilliant food throughout your stay. Fantastic appetisers that change continually throughout the week. The reason is that the island is run primarily for the Italian market and only recently has it started marketing in Britain, so you will not meet many Brits there! The primary language spoken is Italian, but they all speak English perfectly as well. The rooms are superb - luxury in a natural way, lots of wood etc., but you'll notice a great attention to detail and quality in the design. The diving centre is very personal, my daughter and I passed our PADI course in about 5 days which was pretty intensive. The diving is very varied and you leave feeling frustrated as there are so many more places around the resort left to dive. One chap on the island was there for three weeks, with three dives each day! Overall, Gangehi scores on all fronts. Scenery & location, food, staff, accommodations and diving. Beaches are small but really lovely - and you can walk out from the island about a mile and just be up to your ankles. Oh - one last thing - the view of the Milky way in the night sky is just to die for... it's like a white cloud which is something I've only seen in a Nasa photo before! Stay up late, lie on your back looking up and enjoy - we saw a shooting star every 10 minutes or so. Get StarWalk for your iPad and realise some of the brightest stars are 500 light years away...

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are well placed as this is a small island, but go for an over the water one if...

We spent 14 nights at an over water deluxe and it was well worth the extra few quid - although compared to many other resorts it was exceptionally cheap! We stayed in villa 41 as well and never heard any noise at all and echo Tortyhale's comments about the double aspect and amazing sunsets - never was up in time for a sunrise!!

Food was absolutely amazing at lunch and dinner. Beautifully cooked Argentinean steak, fresh fish of every variety daily and chicken available every day along with fresh pasta. Puddings are to die for with a selection of freshly made deserts and home made ice cream available at lunch and dinner. Breakfast was a little disappointing but croissants and coffee were fine along with the odd omelette or fried egg!

My partner and I both enjoy our diving. The dives were beautiful, the dive staff lovely, knowledgeable and all speak great English. Watch out for the added extras on diving though - it is not cheap and 12€ fro the hire of a torch for a night dive caught us out!

We also both spent time at the spa having massages and treatments and both the women are absolutely lovely, so absolutely recommend it.

We upgraded to the all inclusive option the day we arrived. This was 60€ each per day which may seem steep but if you intend to have more than a couple of coffees, a couple of soft drinks, a couple of bottles of water and perhaps one or two cocktails, this quickly mounts up. Two alcoholic drinks each (including tax) came to 42€ - you have been warned!!!

The staff, Italian and Maldivian were absolutely lovely and couldn't be more helpful. Don't be put off by people saying July isn't a good time to come - in 14 days we had one night of rain and one afternoon where it rained. Every other day constant sunshine!!

All in all, Tortyhale has said it all and I am at risk of repeating all her comments!! This was a pre wedding moon for us and it was amazing!!

Room Tip: Over water deluxe bungalows work out at about £600 more than a beach for two weeks and are so worth...
