“Fantastic guesthouse with a fine breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

Stayed at The Bell in Maldon for one night after fleeing a caravan site and looking for something cosier. The owner Liz was extremely accommodating at very short notice. Our room (the twin) was comfortable, with nice touches such as bottled water and welcome chocolates provided. There were two highlights to our stay at The Bell - the first was the very cute Pomeranian dogs who are kept away from the guest areas but are happy to socialise if you wish and are very friendly. The second was the top quality breakfast, as good as any you will find, with thick slices of bacon in the full english plus fresh strawberries and freshly squeezed orange juice.

Maldon itself is a lovely place to explore and The Bell is in a great setting next to the Blue Boar pub. We managed to explore several pubs in Maldon and real ale drinkers won't be disappointed. All in all a great if brief stay.

Very handily placed just off the High Street and opposite the Blue Boar which has a quaint outlook and a good micro brewery.

Only 10 minutes walk from the Water front and park.

The building is nice and clean, parking can be accommodated off site.

Liz the land lady is a bit eccentric which adds to the charm of the place.

Our room, room 5 faced the Victorian Vicarage at the back and the Blue Boar at the front, with a walk in wardrobe and old but comfortable furniture. The bed is large and very comfortable. Off of the bedroom is and unusual bathroom, furnished with and sink against one wall and a bath that stretches across the end wall. The only downside is the old fashioned gold hand shower. Off of this is the toilet and bidet
.
Breakfast is in the basement. Very good menu. Full English plus, fruit, fruit juice, bread, toast, jam, honey, tea and coffee. All locally sourced. Liz likes to sit and chat over a cup of coffee with guests after they have eaten. There does not appear to be any hurry for you to leave which makes breakfast very relaxing
.
Would happily stay again.

Room Tip: choose room 5 and have a drink in The Blue Boar

Very friendly welcome from the hostess Liz, lovely clean rooms and comfy beds. All the little touches you could think of in the rooms. The dogs were so cute and very well trained. We stayed in 6 & 7 which are a double room and twin room respectively that share a bathroom. Both were well equipped and clean. Be prepared for lots of nooks and crannies in this very interesting guest house. The stunning breakfast is served in the basement and consisted of many choices, fresh fruit, cereal, kippers, kedgeree, full English with a choice of scrambled, poached or fried eggs, croissants, rolls, brown and white toast, freshly squeezed orange juice, proper coffee and tea, phew, enough to feed an army and all served beautifully on a proper laid table with good linen.
You definitely can't go wrong here, highly recommended

Room Tip: Room 5 looked enormous and would be ideal for that special couples weekend

A memorable weekend! On arrival we were welcomed into this wonderful old building and told that we had been upgraded to the superior bedroom (no 5), which was lovely as we had already decided to ask to stay an extra night. This room is massive, with walk in wardrobe and huge ensuite, the duel aspect made it beautifully airy, even on a sweltering hot day.Breakfast is served in a lovely dinning room on a table groaning with fresh fruit and preserves. The choices for cooked breakfast were extensive and mouth watering - only the best good quality produce was offered. The friendly little dogs are well managed and kept away from the guest areas, but you can meet them if you want to in the garden. This somewhere I would certainly recommend to my friends.

Only four guest rooms (two en suite and two sharing a bathrrom), so expect to meet your fellow guests in the comforatble lounge, garden or dining room. Also expect to meet the owners four Pomerian dogs. You will be given a door code so that you can come and go as you please. There is limited parking so book it in advance. The breakfast is legendary and generous. Full English and any combinations of that or Kedgeree or kippers are available - order the day before. Good value, a fine location and a warm welcome.

If you are looking for a quintessential English B & B in Maldon, then The Bell has to be it.

What to expect? Well to begin with a very warm welcome from Liz, the proprietor. On our arrival Liz offered us refreshments which as it was a nice day we were able to enjoy in the idyllic, walled garden. The parish rectory is on one side of the wall and the church the other, all of which adds to the generally calm, peaceful atmosphere.

Our rooms were terrific. My husband and I had room 5 - I think possibly the largest room. It has large windows at either end, allowing maximum light into the room. It is fitted with a walk-in wardrobe and a large ensuite bathroom. The bedroom was extremely comfortably furnished with a beautiful feather duvet and huge number of pillows. We slept very peacefully indeed. Our daughter had room 4 which was also well appointed.

Why here? This B&B is run like an extension of your own home. There are books, and art work and music in abundance; you really feel like a member of the family and at breakfast it's great to meet fellow guests and discuss the activities you've all been enjoying through the day.

On the subject of breakfast I can assure you, you will be delighted. A full English breakfast which is a treat: croissants and breads / toasts with a big selection of cheese, jams and fresh fruit such as strawberries. There was a choice of fruit juices and a ready, steady supply of tea and coffee with choices of skimmed or semi-skimmed milk. We could have had kedgeree if we wished but we opted for the delicious bacon, sausage, mushroom, beans, eggs (cooked exactly how YOU like them) poached, fried or scrambled...am I making you hungry? My husband is vegetarian and Liz made no fuss about this and prepared him a wonderfully cooked vegetarian version which he said was perfect.

The Bell is very well situated for the town centre, but off the high street so wonderfully tranquil at the same time. You'll be able to access all of Maldon's attractions very easily from this B&B. When we're in the area again, we will definitely be staying at Liz's place - we felt like we made a friend.

One last thing to say, if you like dogs - there is another attraction as Liz has four wonderful 'pomeranian' dogs (a small breed so no need for alarm) in residence. They are an absolute joy and should not put you off making a booking. They have their own quarters although they do come and greet new guests.

All in all a very happy time and excellent value for money.

Exellent welcoming place to stay. The breakfast makes you feel you are in paradise. We spent to nights here with more family basicly the place was occupied by our family.
Liz is realy making all her guest welcome and likes to get to know all the members of the family.
We were able to get two cars parked as well and that was helpfull over the weekend.
A big thank you to Liz from Johannes and Fernanda Koopmans, Marcella Eddy Ben and Megan
