“Run for the owners not the customers?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2013

Quirky place, but overall it feels the people running it don't care.

The food is very variable. It is far worse than I (an average cook) cook at home. Service is erratic and I felt little interest in making me as a customer feel satisfied. I ordered curry one night which has made me feel ill and was a skewer of dubious tasting chicken with a plate of yellow goo which had a 'don't eat me' smell.

Lamb cutlets one night were okay but served wiuth stringy home grown beans with almost indigestble skins that I had to spit out on the plate rather than swallow. Gravy nice but again if you pay for it then surely it should be edible for the guests.

The courtyard room was freezing and seemed to have no heating. I had another room the night before in the house which was okay.

The owner, I think he was, clearly recognised the curry was not right because he came over to say it wasnt perfect 'but there you go' without me even saying anything. This felt like he didnt care enough about me as a guest to replace or refund it.

Overall it feels like a good lark for the owners who for whatever reason think the guests are just sort of there to enjoy the abience of the old furniture and so on.

I actually feel ill now and so need ot go to bed!

In ten years I have made a negative comment twice. This is the second!

What a disappointment. The rooms were tired and grubby. When I arrived to collect our key on the second night there was no one at reception and after a 10 min wait we went to the room and used our car key to get in. some security! the bathroom was dirty and towels stained and threadbare. The hotel has SO much potential!, it has a great situation and could be lovely.

Overall it's a quirky hotel with friendly staff and a great location. We enjoyed sitting in their ornate parlour reading the papers. The downsides were possibly the most uncomfortable pillows we have ever encountered which led to sleepless nights and us both grumpy. This is not ideal for a romantic trip away! Other than that our room felt very tired with a depressing bathroom and wallpaper hanging off the walls. Breakfast was just about ok but undrinkable coffee. Dinner was a real let down, which is a shame as it is a great venue and should be heaving. But overall it is not bad value for money.

We arrived at the hotel 21st September after booking in June as we had a wedding to go to 10 mins away .First the manager couldnt find the key so we said not a problem we will go and have a coffee and come back we got back to find he had gone home not left the key or any instuctions for the staff so they tried all the keys eventually we got in the room to find someonelses i pad clothes toiletries etc The guy who got us in said it was an ignorant traveller who had gone out for the day so he took all the stuff out and said we could stay. How he had the key to the room !we sat in there deciding what to do when we pulled down the bed the sheets had not been changed they had obviously double booked , so we packed our stuff and told them we were leaving awww said one women WELL THAT HELPED then a guy come from the kitchen said probably a German ! oh and this only happens because we are popular !! well hopefully not so after a few people read this review ,no help what so ever We had to find somewhere else to stay and arrived late for the wedding .If you make a mistake then it is up to you to put it right not for us to have to drive all round Malden trying to find somewhere .There were signs up saying staff needed i would say Manger needed and staff training in customer service .

Stayed at the Blue Boar on a Sunday night, found the pub attached to the hotel full of very friendly staff and customers. The pub brews it's own real ale which is a very nice, and it is decorated with charm, a proper old fashioned pub. The hotel doesn't serve food on a Sunday night, but there are plenty of places nearby. The hotel has public rooms decorated in grand if slightly shabby style and the bedrooms are fairly basic but very clean. However the beds are very comfortable and the rooms quiet so a great night sleep was had. The morning after a wide selection of tasty breakfast available.

I've lived down the road from The Blue Boar for most of my life, it's a great pub- full of history and friendly staff. Me and my husband chose to stay there last night (our wedding night) and were booked into room 16.
We booked in just before 11pm, the room was quite small for a Double but suited us perfectly. The bathroom was clean. The floors and ceilings were wonky but we like that kind of thing! The only downsides were the town clock opposite that chimes quite loudly every hour and the size of the "full english" breakfast. There must have been a teaspoon of each thing, and about 5 baked beans! On the whole if you love a place full of history, old paintings and quirky furniture, this place is for you.
