“I couldn't believe this was a campsite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

Amazing. I couldn't believe this was actually a campsite. There are a handful of sites and they all afford campers privacy. They are very well maintained and designed. I thought I was on a movie set. It was hard to believe it was real and that I was not in a travel channel best campsites of the world episode. The service was great. We were greeted at check-in and a fire was started for us. The next morning a host arrived to start a fire for us as well. The shower was possibly the best shower I've had in my life. The water temperature was great and pressure and seriously birds were flying up to the shower wall. Porcupines paid a visit in the night and punctured the water hoses, but it didn't cause us any real problems. We stayed one night before going to the lodge and it was winter. Cold at night, but hot during the day. I imagine very hot in summer.

This is our second stay at Grootberg and if anything, we enjoyed ourselves more than last time as we had three days there!

The view is absolutely breathtaking - the rooms are perched on the lip of a canyon with verandas from which you can watch black eagles soaring, dassies barking and klipspringers making death defying moves amongst the rocks. The staff are incredibly friendly and the service is excellent. The food has improved to even higher standards since our last visit - even down to sugar work on our puddings!

The rooms are comfortable, but could probably do with a bit of a spruce up as they are starting to look a wee bit tired - but when you have that view it really doesn't matter at all. They have installed solar water heaters since our last trip ensuring a nice warm shower (although the donkey boilers remain for the odd cloudy day).

My husband raved about the rhino tracking trip - I spent the day in blissful isolation on the veranda taking in the view.- highly recommended if you need a day of down time during a long trip.

We'd highly recommend Grootberg as a top lodge in this price bracket and will definitely return there on our next trip....

Room Tip: If you have mobility problems it would be best to request a room near the lodge as you need to go do...

Very disappointing stay. We arrived on a cold day. The donkey wasn't working properly (chimney blocked) so we did not have any hot (lukewarm) water till the following day. Fantastic entertainment area with pool and bar but unfortunately unusable due to the flies. Booked for 3 days. Left after 2.

We stayed at the affiliated Hoada Campsite down the road from Grootberg lodge. At this time there are only 3 sites, but they are building more.

It is camping in the bush, plus a pool and private ablution. No electricity or ice is available at the camp location, so plan ahead for your stay.

We had a great three days, and hiking around the property and swimming in the pool were highlights.

The sites are built into the boulders, which has to make it the most unique camp I have ever enjoyed.

Hoada Campsite (run by the Grootberg lodge 25km away) was one of the highlights of our self-drive tour. The grounds are expansive, and each of the three campsites (more are under construction and I believe will be built by Dec. 2013) has its own (immaculately maintained) shower, toilet and covered kitchen area, all cleverly tucked away between huge boulders for privacy. The staff are warm, friendly and helpful, the bar serves ice cold drinks (a real necessity after spending a day in the scorching heat) and the dipping pool also provides some ice-cold respite for the overheated.

I couldn't recommend this campsite more enthusiastically, it was a real highlight of our trip!

Bungalows are on the rim of a canyon with spectacular views. Room was nice; little space in the bathroom area. Amazing views from pool area.

Service was mediocre at best. We requested wake ups on several days that either didn't come or were late. The staff at the main lodge seemed to lack direction and definitely operated on a clock that wasn't in sync. Food was adequate. The dog migrating periodically through the restaurant and begging at your table was not enjoyable. He even killed a rodent in the restaurant during a meal. Perhaps we should have found that comforting, but most of us found it disturbing.

The rhino drive we booked was awesome. Trackers and driver were first rate. It was a 4x4 excursion to remember forever.

The management and staff were truly excellent in actions and spirit. My wife was unwell when we arrived so the staff immediately offered 100% room service - not a simple undertaking as our chalet was a long walk from the restaurant, and still got the meals to her hot! They came repeatedly to check on her well-being and this in itself contributed to a quick recovery.
The lodge looks into a mini-Grand Canyon, with unbelievably beautiful sunrises, and with a view like this we forgave them the absence of early morning tea/coffee making facilities. For other times there were thermos flasks of really hot water available and a range of tea, coffee and chocolate drinks sachets in the chalets.

I went on the Rhino Drive and saw not only black rhino but also lion and a lot of other wildlife. An afternoon walk was called off because fresh lion tracks had been seen on one of the paths.

The waiting and kitchen staff made up an excellent after-dinner choir, with just as much enthusiasm put in their singing performance as they put into their everyday jobs. We cannot recommend this Lodge highly enough, although the precipitous nature of the landscape would prevent us from taking young children there.

Room Tip: Chalet no. 1 is furthest from the main building, so if you want total isolation go for that but virt...
