“Top class b&b”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013 via mobile

A beautiful, characterful farmhouse which makes a most lovely setting for a weekend away. From the moment we arrived our hosts made us very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. In such an old property, you wouldnt expect the rooms to be identical and they are not in any way; all have indivdual decor schemes and layouts so each visit can be a new experience. Indeed, when booking you can view each room and choose exacly what you want. On arriving in the rooms you cant help be impressed with all the thoughtful touches and little extras to make your stay more comfortable, even ear plugs for those who sleep very lightly. This had actually been a worry for me, having discovered the exact location of the property on the morning we set off- it is right on a crossing of 2 major roads. However, the double glazing installed in the bedrooms almost completely mutes the traffic noise and we slept very well, which set us up for the excellent breakfast. Since the restaurant is so highly regarded, we hoped breakfasr would be special, and it really was, everything cooked to order, beautifully presented and delicious - the smoked haddock in particular gained rave reviews from our party. What else is there to say, the gardens are pleasant, and my favourite spot in the house was the garden sitting room - no TV, no music, just peace and quiet. Overall, quite a delightful couple of days, we will definately visit again.

Superb little guest house, very comfortable stay and excellent food in the restaurant. No issue with the noise from the road and non issue with portion size as reported by others. One or two tiny niggles. We were upgraded to one of the larger rooms so it seems a bit crass to complain but one of the skirting boards was quite dusty and a black line edged the carpet below presumably from dust deposits. Everywhere else was clean and tidy......the bed was really comfy.
Dinner (and breakfast) were lovely. Dinner was reasonably priced and well cooked although my mains lamb dish was slightly overcooked. My wife had lobster, she said it was the best she had tasted1 Service was great, all the staff were cheery and helpful from the moment we arrived. Breakfast cooked to order. quality ingredients and quality cooking with cereals, toast, fresh fruit, yoghurts also available.
If we are ever in the area again we would definitely stay here again. Market Drayton is a bit of a let down. Its the home of the gingerbread man but we couldn't find a single shop selling them.

I stayed here as my friend was getting married near by. I booked the twin room, it was absolutely perfect for what I need it to be. There are stunning gardens which was great to sit out and relax in.

For breakfast I had the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast - delicious.

I would recommend this to anyone who is staying in the area.

I had a great stay at Ternhill Farm House. The room was spacious, cosy and really well kept. Clearly there's much pride in the decoration and upkeep. We were slightly concerned by the nearby road but these were unfounded as the double-glazing kept road noise to a minimum. Particular mention goes to the breakfast, which was great!

Yes we returned for a weekend stay and the place just gets better.
The menus change regularly with new and inventive dishes and lots of trio starters and desserts. The cooking by Mike is superb, all meals and breakfasts are delicious. Staff are friendly, attentive and efficient and the welcome is genuine.
We had a refurbished room which was tastefully decorated and just absolutely everything was in the room. Cosy friendly atmosphere and a pleasurable relaxing comfortable stay.
We will return again.

Room Tip: Ear plugs are supplied but you'll have a good nights sleep anyway. No swimming pool or fitness...

I was really looking forward to our stay here after all the excellent reviews but was disappointed with the room Hawkestone. It was quirky and nicely decorated and the bed was very comfortable but what let it down was no view from the windows and the shower cubicle in the bedroom. Might have been ok if it was a quality luxury cubicle with a power shower, but it wasn't. Also being above the kitchen there was constant noise from fans etc. The food was good but again we had higher expectations and some of the portions were very small and having to pay extra for bread for already expensive food was a bit much. The breakfast was good with lots of choice but the thin sandwich bread used for toast was a bit of a let down. The staff are really pleasant and helpful and the rooms and surroundings are beautifully decorated and make it very special place, just a shame as I really wanted to like it more.

Room Tip: I would not choose Hawkestone room

We thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your stay last Saturday.....customer feedback is essential for us to assess and improve upon the level of service we provide for our guests.

We are delighted that you enjoyed the quirkiness of our farmhouse, the comfortable bed, decoration and the friendliness of staff but concerned that your stay was not as enjoyable as expected.

With regard to your suggestion of a power shower in Hawkstone Room, we do plan to upgrade the size of the shower over the next few months, but do not plan to install an individual, electrically operated power shower.
Currently, we have a pressurised hot water system which pumps our water to the same pressure as that of a individual power shower but does not have the associated noise within the room itself. Each shower head is then adjustable to increase or decrease the flow of water.

With regard to the "constant noise from fans" in Hawkstone Room, that room is indeed over the kitchen.
However, the extractor fan is only small..... as we only cater for 20/30 people....and is only operated during restaurant service times from 6.30pm to 9.30pm (when I believe you were dining in the restaurant) and then again during breakfast service from 8.00am to 9.30am (I believe you had breakfast at 9am).
Outside these times any "hum-type" noise would not have been from our kitchen fan.
It was very windy last Saturday night, and being an period property the wind can appear to "hum/whistle"? However, we are concerned that you found it disturbing during your stay and will look into it over the next few days in case there is something we are not aware of.

Sadly, the "lack of a window to look out of" is not something we can rectify. Hawkstone Room is in part of the old grain storage area of the farm and hence has a slopping ceiling which is shown in the photos & floor plans on our website at www.ternhillfarm.co.uk
As a character property, all our rooms are slightly different in terms of size, shape and decor. For this reason, we do provide as much information as possible on our website so that guests can make an informed choice before booking a specific room. Unfortunately, we do not have that provision on booking agents websites like Booking.com (which you booked through). Whilst providing as much info as possible they only use generic room names/types and allow us very limited say in the description of each room.
However, as a result of your review I have now been able to persuade Booking.com to include the details of the velux windows on their site too....we are just sorry that it spoilt your stay.

With regard to your dinner, our ethos is based on using local & home-grown ingredients with an emphasis on quality rather than quantity, but we are very sorry if you felt that our portion sizes we're inadequate.
Previous experience has proved that if we offer bread at the beginning of the meal guests cannot always finish their entire meal. Instead we serve a complimentary, lighter "Amuse Bouche", which on Sat was an Homemade Carrot & Coriander Soup, prior to your starters.
However, for those that do require bread it is available at a nominal cost of £1.50 pp.
With your complimentary Amuse Bouche, 2 Starters, 2 Main Course, 1 Dessert & 1 Eng.Cheeses (selection of 5) your bill for food totaled £51.15.
We feel that this is very competitive with other 2 Rosette Restaurants in this area eg.Goldstone Hall or The Inn at Grinshill and, indeed, restaurant that do not hold AA Awards.

Thank you again for taking the time to post a review & photos and we do hope that you will return for a future visit.....perhaps a different room, but we would appreciate your comments on the improvements we have planned for Hawkstone Room too.

Please do not hesitate to contact myself or Tom regarding this or any future visits.

Kind regards
Jo Abraham

Lovely gay friendly place with some beautiful rooms. Exquisit food, stunning surroundings and staff to die for. When i'm back in that end of the country I will be revisiting. Staff advised me that there was a family staying next door and to 'keep the noise down', followed by a wink - showing that they are completely understanding of their guests and humorous.
