“You want rustic? You got rustic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2012

I was woken up by the cowbells, so this place certainly qualifies as rustic tourism (with wifi). The only reason for staying here is probably to eat dinner at Asador Exteberri. The hotel is a nice walk up hill, but you will probably not find it on your first try here. When you arrive into town and look for it, search for the colorful recycling bins near the church, then follow the road up the hill towards a large house. You will have arrived at Mendi Goika.

If you're eating lunch at Etxebarri, this little hotel up the hill is an extremely convenient place to waddle back to afterwards, and spend the night. It's nothing fancy but has real character (wonderful old flagstones) and was, we thought, rather good value. Service is friendly. The village is a beautiful, tranquil place and there's a pleasant, well-tended path a short drive away along an old railway track, that's perfect for walking off your meal after your siesta!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2007

This hotel, set in a restored stone farmhouse, above the small town of Axpe in Basque Country, is truly a place where "the silence is heard" - It overlooks this lovely Basque valley with the imposing mountains in the distance and the tinkling of bells on sheep grazing in the valleys below. The hotel has a good restaurant, but one of the best restaurants in all of spain, Etxebarri, is in the village below as well. That is why we stayed there -- for the Etxebarri experience. However, as charming as this hotel is, the bed was one of the worst we have ever had -- seemed smaller than a double, lumpy, and with only a single long pillow we had to fight over! We asked for another room but they said all the beds were the same. The bathroom was tiny, and the room dark -- the shutters did open on to a small balcony, but we couldn't keep the windows open at night because the rain came in, so it ended up being very stuffy. Too bad because this hotel is beautiful and the setting is stunning.

  • Liked — The setting and the rustic elegance of the buildings
  • Disliked — The rooms were dark and the bed was terrible
