“Trip of a Lifetime!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2013

I recently returned from a 5 day trip at Punta Teonoste. The staff was very friendly, the location was amazing and the overall experience was a once and a lifetime opportunity. It is a bit of an experience traveling from the airport in Managua (long, dirt roads) and if you are expecting a smooth ride, you will be disappointed. Once we arrived we were amazed at the beauty of the property and the stunning beach. If you are looking for a place to escape from your daily life, this is the place to go. Don't expect many modern amenities in your room but that was part of the charm. The outdoor shower and bathroom was very unique and relaxing. The manager of the resort was very attentive to our every need and the surf instructor, Emir, was extremely helpful and drove us to a variety of local beaches during our stay. Deniz, the bartender was a great host during our stay. If you are looking to get a glimpse into a different world while visiting some of the best beaches on the planet, Punta Teonoste is a great choice!

Just got back after a 5 night, 6 day stay with three childhood friends. The 4 of us had an amazing stay. The key is to book all inclusive. The food can get expensive on an individual basis. The all - in allows you to order to your hearts content. Also know your earth geograpgy when ordering. The steaks are OK, but the ceviche (house speciality) was delicious. The snapper, grilled sea bass and catch of the days grilled or thrown with tomotate and pasta hit the spot. stay fish - chocolate crepes for desert , best thing on menu

For breakfest we started every morning with a fresh fruit salad for the table. we also had fresh fruit smoothies, yum + fantastic way to start your day. I got the omelette most mornings but don't sleep on the cinammon french toast.

The all-in food is key. Also vital is a surf package. we did the beg. And because of this had our very own driver for the entirety of our stay, emir (u da man!). 3 out of 4 had never surfed. And every morning we hit a new, incredible beach. They were private, holes in the wall, free from life itself ! And even if your can't surf which we couldn't, get some lessons, and even if you can't get up, cruise a few waves in on your belly or knee's. You have to enjoy the waves, and the numerous beaches ensure you'll find easy ones to glide on.

The all inclusive includes airport transporatation - u don't want to rent your own vehicle. remeber this is a 3rd world country, why do that to yourself? The drive was great. some of the reviews are negative only because they made the wrong decisions, this isn't a do it yourself type of thing. The drive from Managua to Punta was wonderful. We stopped for an outdoor latrine half way there, and monkee's threw mango's at us. Ah doom! It was fantastic.

The stars, and views from the lobby bar of the gigantic sunset's are worth it in spades. We had a villa, another key when booking. There were three beds upstairs and one queen down. Our pad even had a name, Cilantro. I got so drunk the first night, I left dinner, and got lost, I ended up in the bosses (Roberto :!) bed in his villa. They sent a search party and were wicked nice about it when I was finally discovered. One of my patriots in his bed upstairs encountered some bites the first night and we simply doubled up on the queen and stayed away from that net for the rest of the time. The last night I fell asleep outside on the hammock my alarm clock was the sunrise. It was special.

There is no TV, and the shower water does not get hot, remember your on the equator, just shower when there is still light, it's luke warm, not cold and feels so great. Shower and air dry, the breezes are guranteed. There is also no dance performances or room serivice - this is a trip opposite of the lame cruise crowd.

The horses and fishing trips I'd stay away from unless you are an accomplished rider and have the stomch to go after big snapper in deep, rough waters. Me and my buddy puked our faces off, we were not ready. However the afternoon soon flipped when our man and guide (Dennis, holla!) rallied us to a near by fisherman's bar right up the dirt road. we hit the juke box, mixed with the locals and danced baby! It was if I may say, legendary.

We also hit some more "gringo" spots, we absolutely loved the fact English was rarely spoke at our resort. Americans are easy to find, the driver again is key. The hotel magnifico was perhaps one of the best day drinking spots on earth. it was great to have a schedule, and such a proper place to return to. I can see from the reviews this spot might not be for everyone however we found it to be a one of a kind spot to be return to. Big shout's to Roberto, Denis, Emir - also watching the baby sea turltes hatch and race to the water for the first time was cool - we bet on them made it fun.

throw caution into the wind and have a stay to remember

Carl E Easton aka Charlie Paradise PS: massage was money + go the thermal springs at night :) - hit a local bar and play the juke box

Arrived at this place after what seemed like a very long drive on a gravel road. It has a spectacular lobby, bar and restaurant area facing a nice pool and an amazing beach. The staff seemed friendly and helpful, but then they took us to our room, and that's where the problems began. The rooms, in separate grass hut style, are small, very dark, improperly secured, and HOT. I can live without air conditioning, but at least fans that circulate air would be helpful. And add to that the numerous Mosquitos, ants and other assorted insects that share your room, coupled with ripped mosquito netting, intense heat and hard beds, it all amounted to a rather unpleasant stay.

This was a bitter sweet experience
The facilities were unique, pleasant, clean and fun.
The beach and location were to die for if you are looking for a place of solace. Often we could walk the beach for hours with seeing no one. The beaches were clean safe and great for boogie boarding and surfing.
The winds were strong often making the walks on the beach a little painful
The food menu was limiting and expensive....$27 for one crepe with 5 prawns in it, the crepe came with nothing else.... Very over priced
We were there for 13 days, the food was boring, very overpriced, extremely limiting, although there was a lot on the menu often they were out of the item.
It would be a necessity to have a car to go out to eat... The location and beach was spectacular
There were no beach chairs
The disappointing part were all the turtle poachers, at this rate they will be extinct in no time
The massage was wonderful
The staff was very limiting in promoting any side trips and were less then helpful
Our shoes were stolen 10 feet from the security guards, by poachers
We listened to abba for xmas and they did offer new years special but no one knew what the special was nor what it was going to cost... We had no choice, so we were there hostages
Demand good mosquito nets

Room Tip: Bring in food option and water... Be self sufficient, consider anything else bonus

The Good: Beautufil beach, and nice quiet.
The Bad: No air conditioning, no hot shower, no TV. They got a full menu, but every time I order something, they were out. For instance, their dessert menu list a few choices, they were all out; for 2 days they only had cheese flan; the next day only brownies. The food quality was average, nothing spectacular.
Punta Teonoste goes on the list of "been there, done that" and will NEVER go back; their prices are ridiculous high and you don't get much.

Room Tip: If you want confort, this is not it. Not AC, no hot showers, no TV. Bar las VERY LIMITED options.

We arrived at night and were very pleased the staff waited for us. The place is not easy to find since there is only a small yellow sign informing you where Punta Teonoste turn off is from the main road (so ask for directions before hand). Once you make the turn it is basically another 20 miles of mostly dirt road. The road is under construction, so in a year or two it will be a smooth drive. Once you arrive the view is speculator and will take your breath away.
I read the reviews and most are accurate with the description and expense. For an upscale establishment one does expect more, but that did not deter us from having a wonderful time and experience. We did pretty much have the place to ourselves. Maybe because of the time of year or the distance from the town is what prevents more people from staying. The hotel we were informed is under new ownership and slowly upgrading/improving the place and staff. It was obvious with the staff, rarely were we asked if anything was needed. Once the meal was served no one ever came back unless you asked them over. With the all inclusive package, no alcohol beverage is part of the amenities, but at least they make it up with the food variety.
Some of the staff member do go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and pampered and will gladly accommodate most requests you have.
I highly recommend taking the trip to the Hot Spring Pool. Better go now before the place is eventually turned into a resort area. Such a delightful package...the natural hot water, the pate, bread and wine. Since we were the only ones, we were allowed to stay longer which was phenomenal.
The bungalow we stayed in was a bit unusual. The bedroom is up a rounded staircase and there is absolutely no privacy if you want to change, so leave your luggage downstairs. It would be more appropriate if there was a screen and curtains, but the bedroom balcony is all open to the outdoors. As for maid service, only if you ask for it.
It’s still a wonderful place and well worth the adventure. We did get a discount because of the off season; otherwise for the expense, the establishment is quite high for the area and amenities.

1. The beach and the sights are amazing. The scenery's tranquility is only interrupted by the crash of waves and the singing of colorful finches. The cliffs very cool and there are tons of places to walk. If you want to surf give it a shot, but be careful as the tides can become quite violent. Also, I have never seen more stars in my life. I believe I counted 5 shooting stars in one night.

2. Biking around the immediate area is recommended if you are adventurous. They need to get new bikes (the ones they gave us were old and did not work well at all). There are a ton of very strange, but quite excellent looking mansions around the area. There are also some of the poorest, but nicest people you'll ever meet. (do speak Spanish)

3. The food is so-so. Some meals were splendid and some were quite lacking. There are few options for vegetarians. Drink lots of Tona (which is a beachy, crisp lager full of flavor)

4. The lodge and the Cabanas are flat out awesome. Well constructed, each cabana affords amazing views of the foamy surf. Often times the horses will feed just outside your room affording some great pictures. While we were there we had them move the main bed to the second floor (northern cabanas). The outdoor showers is very cool also. The rooms are quite clean and very comfortable.

5. The service is very good. They are obviously new at the whole resort game, but they work very hard to please you. At times they seemed terrified.

6. Walk the nature trail. While it comes to a dead end, it is cool to see what they were originally going for but failed to complete.

7. Check out the hot springs. You'll hang around some locals and the staff of the hotel will make you feel special with tiki torches and wine.

8. Watch out for the turtles. They are ever present and very cool to see.

9. Ride the gentle, well-kept horses. Watching the Sunset on horseback is extra special here.

10. I really would like to know more about this place. It is interesting in the sense there are some plans that were attempted but never completed (the nature trail). I understand this, in parts, is a Swiss owned venture. I would not be surprised at all if this was a front for a money laundering operation.

Room Tip: Ask for a Cabana to the north of the lodge. Buy water and before you get here (its out of control ex...

Hello GozerTraveler,

Thank you very much for all the compliments. Indeed our resort is a very special place where you can relax, come to yourself and enjoy nature.

Concerning surfing and the waves, depending the time of the day and season, waves are from 1 meter up to 4-5 meters and that makes Resort Punta Teonoste the best surf location resort in Nicaragua making it up to your skills which waves you prefer to ride. We have a great surf teacher available on request, who has also great experience working with children. After a day of surfing and if needed, we can offer a good massage from our Spa, where several Spa treatments are available.

A Swiss/Nicaraguan family, who decided to build this resort throughout the years, owns the resort. Slowly up, from one villa to sixteen in total, the whole resort was completed finally three years ago. The Club House is a beautiful indigenous structure with Restaurant, Spa, Lounge, Bar, Yoga and Reception area. We are now in the process of updating our villas again, as an ongoing process of updating our resort to service our Guests the best we can.

Slowly our resort receives the international appreciation for our conservation work for the Turtles, exceptional Kitchen and great Surf experience. Our staff is from the area and as they say in the country side life is very "sana" here in Nicaragua, means they are friendly and almost shy. Therefore, their English is not that good, but it is improving and slowly they feel confident to speak it and communicate better with our Guests.

Surf & Turtle Resort Punta Teonoste is ready for international Guests, who love Surfing, Turtles, Nature tours and good kitchen. You may ask our kitchen to make something special, especially for you and your partner or family, they love to do that, our staff loves to take care of you!
