“Harmony not Wash N Go”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

Arrival at the lodge is like dropping into a well paced drift dive, just enough momentum to help you along, but as you leave a realisation that the 3 elements of Diving, lodging and Eco have been harmoniously managed with the Guest in mind.

Diving – one of the best set-ups with a Mother-ship and tender approach allowing for relaxation and critter identification between dives, but the real highlight are the expert guides (Nando & Denny in our case) whose enthusiasm and experience allow you to get the best from what at first looks like a very unpromising diving environment – black volcanic sand - but by the end of the week you’ll be hooked on behaviour spotting and competing (but always failing) to find the smallest shrimp, nudibranch or octopus.

Lodging- we were lucky to only be on-site with a maximum of 5 divers on the boat (only 7 in the resort) but the whole set-up of pre-ordered meals – fixed menu with a great blend of traditionally prepared local dishes – our choice- and some standard western fare as well, lunchtime (on the Mother-Ship) and breakfast dining as well as mini-snacks on return after dining, mostly from a very small kitchen really contributed to making the stay special. From the rooms to the open-style dining area simplicity and comfort were the key-word and they managed to deliver on these consistently across the week.

Eco – from only locally sourced food, exclusion of non-fish friendly prawns and tuna to waste re-usage and fish-friendly diving practises it was really good to see them standing by the differentiating “Eco” practises that made it a way of life than paying lip-service to a set of marketing guidelines.

After over 700 dives across the world this has to be close to the best land based dive operation we’ve been lucky enough to experience and whilst there were any number of potential tripping points the firm hand of Cary and the friendliness of the local staff really showed the best Lembeh had to offer

Room Tip: Very Democratic as all rooms and lodges set out the same with 3 units per section.

Stayed one night and 4x dives. Dives in the strait and only my partner and I were only divers, so had the service to ourselves. Relaxed and effeciat service and management served us well with our requirements. Certainly will recomment Eco Divers at Lembeh as great service providers.
Food, service, cleaniless, washing dive gear and transport was professional and well appointed. Thank to all at Eco Divers at Lembeh. Linda and John from Australia.

Room Tip: Away from town centre, so quiet, but a bit of a walk to town centre

I am a new diver and I have never been to a dive resort before..
Well, I felt like a queen.
Everything was very well organised .
Lovely freshly cooked meals,dives,gear,transportation...everything..
Touches like fresh fruit after the dive, fresh towels, tasty drinks on arrival to the lodge after a long day diving..I wish I had a recipe for the cinnamon tea, it was delicious.
The mother ship was very comfortable. If you were tired you could take a comfortable nap.
The dives were beyond anything one can expect. Staff was helpful and attentive.
We always felt welcomed and well looked after.
Well done.

Room Tip: All room are essentially the same and well described in some previous reviews.

We had a great trip, we were all overwhelmed by the levels of service, both on the dive boats and at the resort. The dive guides were exceptionally talented at finding the underwater critters, as well as looking after all the divers safety. The food was fantastic, cooked fresh each day from local produce bought daily at the colorful local market. We will certainly be coming back.
Highly Recommended.

Eco Divers Resort Lembeh is a wonderful affordable option in Lembeh Strait. We are both avid divers and underwater photographers. My wife and I idea was to dive in Lembeh and find the most unique underwater animals. We certainly did find what we were looking for. We are 42 years old both with over 1500 dives. So here it is:

Diving: Muck diving means... Macro Capital of the world! You are going to say "Oh god... what am I doing diving in this sandy feature-less bottom" but after a little while you will see you first unique and rare underwater animal, and then another one, and then... another one! and you will love it! Your brain will get into hunting mode and underwater animals will be waiting for you to memorized you! Brilliant diving! If you are into big things... NOT YOUR PLACE! go to to Maldives instead. If you are into wall and wide angle photography.. then go to Bunaken... you come here for macro stuff and you (meaning the dive masters) will find it for you to a level that I have not seen before. The resort is in the middle of Bintung, far away from the ocean. We found this not a problem at all... we only stay 4 days, but most of your day will be spent in the water, so you get plenty of time to relax and enjoy the strait... They take you in cars every morning after breakfast and bring your back after your 3rd dive or your night dive. You will be spending the entire day in the "mother ship" which is very comfortable boat anchored in the middle of the strait. They take you in speed boats (15 min rides max) to all the dive sites and bring you back to the main boat for drinks, coffee, snacks, lunch, etc. Their operation runs like a Swiss clock, perfect! No hassle for anything and they take care of the smallest details ever! Wait for you with hot coffee, dry towels in every dive, smiles, hot chocolate after the night dive, the list goes on... the service that Cary and Jim provides is exceptional. They are divers, and they understand divers! Even they dive with you to find you stuff! wonderful. The dive masters have eagle eyes and find the most unique creatures... just ask them what you want to see... and they will be doing everything in their power to find it. They have Nitrox available for $7 a fill, and it is recommended due to the length of the dives... 4 guest max per dive-master and usually no limit in times as long as you are safe. Water... 82/83F a bit colder than Bunaken, a 5mm will be recommended if you are a cold person.

Food: EXCELLENT! Like a restaurant... you choose from a menu what you want to eat for breakfast and dinner and lunch is provided buffet style at the boat. The quality of the food is amazing! Sit down breakfast and diner, fully served by their wonderful staff. Lots of food! You will gain a few pounds here.

Accommodations: The resort is in the middle of the city like we mentioned. It is an old refurbished building. Each building has a common main area (lots of space) and 3 rooms with private bathrooms/showers. Some reviewers found this to be a problem, to us it was awesome! The rooms are comfortable, and sharing the common space with other guest was not an issue... everyone is so tired after many dives that you barely see anyone! Each building has also a camera/computer room where you can clean, plug in, and if you didn't bring a computer, there is one provided to you. Yes there are no views, no swimming pool, no beach and the rooms are dark; but you are only there after for a few minutes until dinner and then to work in your photos or sleep! If you need the view, beach, etc, this is not the place for you.

Overall: If you are considering Lembeh Strait, most likely you are an avid scuba diver and this is a excellent option to dive and be comfortable! The best is the service. No detail is left unattended (how can you put a price to that!); they will pamper you all your stay. The diving is excellent and there guides are top notch. You will see what you are looking for.

Tips:

- There is nothing to do around the resort. We walk to downtown when we arrive as we have the entire day and it was a good experience. Bintung is very poor, but very clean and with very friendly people. They will stop you to take photos of you in the streets and ask you for your name and where you are from. A soccer fan nation! If you want to establish conversation, this is a good way to start!
- Bring cash to tip the staff (rupians not euros or dollars)
- Bring 220v/110v power adapters

Room Tip: All room are the same. We had 4B, it was great!

We spent a week at this dive resort. The concept is unique and we really enjoyed it.

The resort is not on the water but inland, about 15 minutes away by car. We found the trip to and from it each day fascinating and enjoyable as we got to see the local area versus spending all of our time is a resort, isolated from the outside world.

For diving, we take a one minute ride from the shore in a comfortable dive boat to the "big" boat. From the "big" boat, it is a short ride to the dive sites. Intervals and lunch are back on the "big" boat which has power for recharging batteries and wireless internet.

Their motto says something like "All the comfort of a resort while enjoying all the convenience of a live-aboard."

The staff was wonderful, the food very good, and we really enjoyed our week at the resort.

Room Tip: The rooms are all similar: Three private bedrooms each with a private bath, connected to a large air...

if you can find a more diving focused holiday than a liveaboard this is it. Each morning you are taken from the resort to the day boat and thats where you spend most of the day. Its brilliantly equiped - especially for photos - right down to free wi-fi on the boat. the lembeh straight sites we visited were predominantly muck diving sites - very unusual and some incredible macro photography opportunities. The dive guides find the most unbelievable stuff and the skippers are super helpful too. Cary and jim and team are super helpful - even driving me around to find a suitable running route for my morning training - which I realised was definitely not a common Bitang request after not seeing another runner the whole week. The massages at the resort were terrific too - and oh my word - the food - wow!! Delicious. The location is inland and a 20 plus minute drive from the diving - so if you are looking for the more traditional beautiful sea side accomodation - this is definitely not it - no pool or loungers - no views. the cottages were beautiful, comfortable and clean - with computers and great facilities for working on pictures. while smoking was not allowed in the cottages - which as a nonsmoker I really appreciated the "smoking rules" were very relaxed on the boat. Many of the people in my group smoked - so while we were initially told that smoking was restricted to the top deck of the boat - people smoked on the dive boats and on the dive deck - if this bothers you, no staff says anything so you are either left to live with it or you have to ask other customers not to smoke yourself which wasnt great. You are allowed to bring your own drinks along which is awesome and very pragmatic of Jim and Cary who simply ask you not to bring them to the bar and restuarant - other extra charges should be considered if your budget is tight - add ons for night dives, sticks, bunaken, mandarins etc - check first - probably directly with the resort to avoid confusion between your tour organiser and eco divers. All in a fabulous and unique experience - different to any other dive trip i've been on.

Room Tip: cottages each have 3 rooms of 2 each - its really nice if you know all the people in your cottage...

Dear Guest, thank you very much for your recent review of Eco Divers Resort Lembeh. We're delighted that you had such an enjoyable stay with us. If you don't mind, we would like to respond to the 2 points you made:
1) Smoking - as you said, we do inform all guests that smoking is not allowed indoors, either at the resort or on the dive boat and that on the dive boat smoking is restricted to the top deck. As you know, all the smokers were from your own group so you should have spoken to them about it, or at least asked our manager to speak to them, but you did not ask her to do so. Had you done so, she would not have hesitated to speak to them.
2) With regard to extra charges e.g. night dives, Eco Divers clearly states the inclusions and exclusions both on its website (rates page) and in every quote it sends. Your holiday was booked through an agent in your home country, who knew what was included and excluded from your holiday, so it's incumbent on you, the traveller, to check these facts before you pay and book your holiday in order to avoid any surprises once you're in-resort. There was absolutely no confusion between Eco Divers and your agent - your agent was fully informed of what we would not be including in your package.
We hope that this helps to clarify these two points and we thank you again for taking time to offer us a review, as it helps us to improve our service. We look forward to welcoming you back to Eco Divers in the future.
