“Fantastic Jungle Experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2014

Thomas and his whole team were incredible! I just finished a 3 day trek with them and was an amazing experience. Thomas picked me up from the airport on time as promised in our email convo. We stopped for some local food on our way back to Thomas' retreat, which is approx 3.5 - 4 hrs from Medan Airport. The food was delicious and great "local" and cultural experience. The rooms at the homestay are quite comfortable. Good sized rooms with everything you would expect from a jungle homestay.
The staff and cooks were very acomodating and provided a great level of service. The 3 day trek itself was incredible and saw a ton of wildlife, from Orangutans, to black Gibbons, to Macaques, Thomas Leaf Monkeys and a variety of smaller insects and creatures as well as flora.
My guide's name was Sunny, and he was great! Very experienced and knowledgeable about all aspects of the Jungle. He has a great sense of humour and made the whole 3 days very enjoyable. Sunny was also very patient and willing to stop anytime anywhere for pictures, to watch wildlife or just to relax sometimes and take in the beauty!
The porter and cooks who also helped with the expeditions are fantastic. Very friendly and helpful, and prepare delicious wholesome meals for us every day!
My only recommendation to travelers would be to bring your own inflatable pillow as sleeping conditions in the jungle can be a tad uncomfortable at times, depending on what kind of "mattress" you are used to! But how much can you expect from the jungle?? its part of the experience.

Great Job Thomas and your whole team. Thanks for an awesome time! Hope to see you all again soon.

Matt

I stayed at Thomas Retreat in October last year. The guesthouse was basic but completely fine and comfortable. the food was excellent and Thomas is very helpful and friendly.

The orangutan trek was excellent. Was quite tough on my legs but the guides, food, surroundings all just perfect.

The guides were fantastically helpful. And generated much positive energy within the group.

I would highly recommend this trip to EVERYONE.

I hope to go back there again soon.

We didn't stay at Thomas's place but rather went on a Jungle trek with him. However several people on the Trek were staying and we went back to eat dinner the day we returned from the trek.

This is at the mid to premium end of guest houses. The rooms are spacious, clean and with on-suite showers (and I think sit toilets). The price reflects this at 150,000 Rp however from what I saw this is commensurate with the quality of the accommodation.

The food from the attached restaurant is excellent and priced competitively with other guest house restaurants and 20,000-30,000 for a main.

The jungle trek we went on was truly a highlight.Me and my partner took the 2 dy 1 night option with rafting back. Although feeling fairly unwell Thomas kept up a informative and amusing banter, quickly bringing smiles to the entire group and answering any and all questions. Obviously the point of the trek was to see Orangutans in the wild and we saw upwards of 15, often at very close range. We were also fed to bursting (so there's no need to 'stock up' at breakfast); there are almost hourly food breaks, mostly of fruit but also a rice lunch and then endless tea and crackers at the camp. The evening meal was some of the best Indonesian food I've had and the 'entertainment' Thomas and the other guides put on made it a hugely enjoyable and memorable night. I'm sure there are many excellent guides in Bukit Lawang but Thomas was truly outstanding.

Room Tip: There are 3-7 day trips available where you will really enter the Jungle with a chance of seeing Ele...

Firstly we did not stay a Thomas's Retreat, so can not comment on its facilities but we did go on his Jungle trek and it was a great experience. Thomas and his guides were fountains of information and the food that they prepared for us at the camp and along the trek was exceptional. My wife and I have been jungle trekking in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia and this trek was one of the best. Great fun all round.

Stayed 2 nights at Thomas retreat in conjunction with his jungle trek. The hotel was simple but nice, room was always clean and the staff was very friendly. There is a nice view of the river from the balcony of each room and the restaurant on site offers very cheap meals, the curry is delicious. The only downfall was power would cut in and out but in a small place like BL that's normal and the staff was always quick to get the generator up and going again. We were only in the dark for 10 minutes at the most.

Room Tip: All rooms share the same view and are very similar.

First of all - when you book Thomas over email, do not be put off by his poor written English or him asking for the same information multiple times. Once he confirms your booking everything will be perfectly organized and his spoken English is perfect!!

We stayed with Thomas for 4 days and had an absolutely fanastastic time!! When we arrived in the middle of the night Thomas stayed up just to greet us. We booked a 2 day trek through the jungle. Everything was perfectly organized. Thomas and his staff packed and made lunches for us along the way and cooked a fantastic dinner of various dishes in the evening. The tents are large and easily accomodate 8 people each without squeezing. Thomas has been a guide for over 20 years so his knowledge of the rainforest is great. He knew exactly where we would find some wild orangutans. Thomas and his staff have a great sense of humour which make the trek so much more enjoyable. Their jokes and laughter are so contagious - everyone was always in a good mood :) After the night in the jungle you take a tube down the river back to the village. We also booked white water rafting with him the next day which was a fanastic experience as well. The activities are slightly physically challenging so if you are older and not as fit make sure you let Thomas know. For young travellers there is no question - Thomas is 100% the perfect guide for you.

The rooms are basic but very clean and the food is very good! There are a total of 4 rooms if I remember right and alll face the river. The guys working there play guitar in the evening so its a great relaxed atmosphere. After spending a few days with Thomas it really feels like home away from home.

Things you should bring: Good hiking shoes with grip (if you dont have any - email Thomas and he will provide you with them), a sleeping bag if you tend to get cold at night (Thomas provides thin blankets), lots of insect repellent, swim gear for tubing back the next day.

Thank you Thomas for the great 4 days in Bukit Lawang!

Room Tip: We stayed in room C which was slightly bigger :)

We stayed 2 nights at Thomas place this summer. Its a really clean and comfortable place with a view on the river but not too close to the centre of the village.

We chose this accomodation for one special reason: many other accommodations only have bamboo-cottages and sometimes rats get in at night and start eating peoples stuff. Thomas place is all concrete and paved and very clean so no contact to these anmals at night ;)
