“Our Adventure”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2011

We met Eva last year when we stayed at Bukit Lawang, she has had a lot of bad luck with flooding & fires so I was keen to take my friends back there to eat & give her a little support, unfortunately, I was very disappointed, her little resturant was unattended most of the time. Hopefully things here have improved. :)

“Fabulous Indonesian food - try the gadogado”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2011

Tony's Restaurant is in the strip of shops that you walk through along the river. It is recommended in both Wikitravel & Lonely Planet, however we did not know that when we went there. We had been looking for a place in town to eat and were disappointed with the options, but this place was pretty much the only one trying. They had four tables in a little riverview room with plants and actual table clothes. It was this bit of effort that drew us in - and we are glad we tried it.

The food was great, plus it was a fab place to sit and watch the river action. We ended up eating here several times. They get written up for their pizzas, but we never tried that - Indonesian food in Sumatra is just so very good, why get what you can have back home??

The gado-gado was excellent. As was the chicken skewers. The "tacos" are more like empanadas and are interesting (I had one with tomoatoes & cheese inside) but again I would stick with the Indonesian - that is what really impresses. And if you like spicey - ask that they make the dishes "Indonesian Spicey" it is hot but in a totally wonderfully adictive way.

The service at Tony's is slow as it is a one person kitchen, so don't arrive hungry, but just plan to enjoy the view while you wait. You can even get a cold guiness in a bottle - served with a straw! Or try one of their fruit shakes, the tomato shake is very natural and good.

Tony does not work at this restuarant, he is based at the one they have in Lake Toba. His sister runs this one. We did see the facility in Lake Toba and it was lovely, but a ways from where we stayed so we never made it there. They do have several guest rooms for very cheap in Lake Toba, they look nice from the outside, but would only suggest staying there if you get a motorbike. The restaurant and guest rooms are on a hill overlooking a bay - great views, but perhaps not the best for swimming in the lake.

We really enjoyed our meals at Tony's in Bukit Lawang. We will eat here again when we return to the area. It was good food and good value.

“Best Pizza in Bukit Lawang”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2011

We had 3 pizzas here and all were good. They are pan fried pizzas I believe rather than oven baked. The crust is nicely browned and crunchy. Good taste and toppings and nice friendly service.
