“Miles of sandy beach practically all to yourself”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2012

Playa Esterillos Este is, I understand, one of the few white sand beaches on Costa Rica's Pacific coast. A new highway puts it just 2 1/2 hours from the San Jose airport. We were able to spend our last night at the hotel and had an easy drive the next day to catch our 1 p.m. flight home--much better than staying in an airport hotel or in San Jose. The grounds are lush and shady, with hammocks and lounge chairs on the grass under the palms, and just beyond, the pristine beach and sparkling water. An architect and artist designed and decorated Alma del Pacifico, using stucco and vivid colors and lively works of art. The bathrooms are huge. We spent our days snorkeling and hiking and then retreated to the spa for truly expert massage. The dining room is open air and the food is very good. Don't miss the ceviche! I went with my sister and daughter, but this would be a fabulous spot for a honeymoon.

Room Tip: All of the rooms--10 or 12 in all--are private, walled casitas facing the beach. There's no such...

From the moment we arrived it felt like a true vacation and a perfect place to relax. We had a garden room and it was incredibly quiet and private. The fact that every room has a router meant perfect wi-fi signal which was awesome. The staff are wonderful and the grounds lush and beautiful. We loved walking on the beach in the mornings. There are two pools, one of which is a proper lap pool which we loved. The hotel is a bit secluded which means you have to drive a bit to get to another restaurant. We ate all meals at the hotel and after a few days would have appreciated a wider slection or daily specials. The food was good but certainly not the best we had in Costa Rica. The location is perfect for a secluded getaway which is what we were looking for so would definitely return.

We purchased five nights at this place through Groupon and what an amazing deal. We upgraded to a villa with a plunge pool which my son loved. The resort is small and secluded, but so beautifully maintained. The villa was more than large enough for me, my husband and our two teenagers. I've never been to a beach with so few people--we felt like we had our own private beach. The pool area is also lovely. I just can't say enought good stuff about this place. Only downside is its quite a distance to other places like Jaco and Manuel Antonio.

Room Tip: Its worth upgrading for the beach front villas with a small plunge pool.

We have been to this resort before and will be returning again and again for years to come.
1)The rooms are very private its like having your private villa with a plunge pool
2) The entire staff is 5 STAR all the way
3) Attention to detail was taken to make our anniversary very spectacular
5) Beaches are very beautiful and secluded
6) All the food was excellent including the room service
7) The grounds are like being in a tropical paradise
8) Location is close enough to all the Costa Rica night life as well as all day trip activities.

All I can say is this place is a must stay if you are traveling to the southern pacific side of Costa Rica.
A special thanks to the front desk ( Ricky and Evelyn )for making our trip unforgettable

Room Tip: A must get room is a oceanfront with pool

From the moment we arrived, I was giddy with delight. The grounds are spectacular and spectacularly kept. The colors are breathtaking. Our villa was magnificent. I never thought I would ever be able to afford to stay in such luxurious accommodations. Better even was the privacy and isolation. This hotel is true barefoot elegance. The staff could not have been nicer. They felt like family by the end of our stay. The food was not only delicious and fresh but very affordable. The kids menu had a ton of choices, each priced at $5. Towels were plentiful and replaced often. Beach chairs were delivered wherever you wanted them. Everything was spotless and cleaner than any hotel I have stayed in. I am relatively well traveled and this was in my top 3 hotels ever (up there with the likes of Mala Mala, South Africa and the Pousada in Obidos, Portugal). I cannot say enough about how delighted I was with our entire stay in Costa Rica, but especially the beauty and tranquility of Alma. Pura Vida!!!!!

Room Tip: Villa #12 has a separate living room from bedroom so our family of 5 had plenty of privacy. Also ha...

We enjoyed our stay at the Alma del Pacifico as much as we did the first time we were at the hotel three years ago, when it was the Xandari. We chose to return because we liked the idea of staying at a relatively small, intimate and isolated hotel and yet being able to drive to a number of busier and more built-up locations. Others have described the comfortable, large and well-appointed rooms. The hotel is conveniently located about halfway between Manuel Antonio and Los Suenos and unlike many other parts of Costa Rica, the roads are very good and the traffic light so that it is only 30-40 minutes' drive to each location (and less than that to Jaco, which is a popular town for vacationing students and surfers). Manuel Antonio is of course well known for the activities that it offers. Los Suenos is the location of a bustling Marriott, which is not our thing, though there are a number of restaurants in the area that we enjoy, as there are in Jaco. The Alma del Pacifico is a great location if you are enthusiastic bird-watchers, as we are. You can enjoy seabirds and warblers while having breakfast in the restaurant or walk around outside the front gate of the hotel and see dozens of different species in the fields and trees nearby. We were amused each evening by a large mixed flock of Baltimore and orchard orioles that came to spend the night in the tree outside our room. Wildlife trips were very convenient -- in addition to Manuel Antonio, we enjoyed Carara, which is one of the premier birding sites in Costa Rica and the mangrove forest in Isla Damas near Quepos. We also enjoyed hiking at the Rainmaker Forest Reserve (also near Quepos) though there were very few birds in the afternoon when we were there. The hotel desk staff was very helpful in giving us directions to get to these sites and, when we requested, arranging for a guide.

Room Tip: We stayed in Villa 10, which has a plunge pool overlooking the beach and we greatly enjoyed watching...

My husband and I stayed here in February, and we were extremely happy with our choice. The only negative is the 2 hour drive from the airport, but that is the case for most resorts we found...and we found it well worth the travel. Alma is situated on the most serene stretch of beach. The hotel is very private and quiet and the rooms were spacious and outfitted with very unique decor and features, such as an open shower that can even be opened to the outdoors. The food at the restaurant was delicious, especially for dinner. We also had a couples massage right on our patio facing the ocean. Most memorable, perhaps, though was the service. The staff were all so pleasant, accommodating, helpful, and truly appreciative to have our business. They arranged everything from our excursions to airport transfers to meal recommendations, when we cared to drive off-site (Manuel Antonio, about 30 minutes away, has some fabulous options). We hope that you will visit and enjoy your stay at Alma as much as we did!

Room Tip: We adored having our villa facing the ocean. All rooms are private villas, some face the ocean, som...
