LOCATION: Emei Shan isn’t a large town, so it’s easy to get around from where ever you stay. Emei Shan Hostel C is in a side street off the main rd, easy to find and an easy walk to restaurants and shops.
We had no problems getting a taxi from the main road in front to the bus station to go up the mountain.
TYPE OF ROOM: We booked a room with a large double bed for 2 on Expedia. $28AUD.
On arrival we were offered room 201, which was lovely and looked exactly like that on the website, however there was construction straight across the road opposite the front of the hotel, which 201 looked over, so we asked to move to the other end of the corridor and were offered room 205.
Both rooms were similar size, however 201 had windows you could look out whereas 205 the windows were frosted as it would look out to the building next door if they were not frosted.
The room was large, clean (given the price you’re paying), and the air con worked well.
We did find the room quite noisy, more so noise from the room above, and people coming up and down the stairs. Not much the hostel can do about that unfortunately.
Added bonus having breakfast included.
BATHROOM/SHOWER: The bathroom was basic with shower, which wasn’t screened (so you would wash down the whole bathroom when taking a shower), toilet and handbasin. The water pressure was excellent.
For the price we were surprised to find they even supplied little sachets of shampoo and body wash.
CLEANLINESS: The room was very clean.
CLOSET SPACE: As the room was so large there was plenty of space for cases and bags, however no closet as such.
TV/INTERNET: There was a TV in the room but we didn’t turn it on so I can’t comment on the selection of channels.
Wi-Fi was available throughout the hostel and there were signs up in the room in both English and Chinese to advise of the Wi-Fi password.
SERVICE: We experienced extremes of service. Staff at check in were lovely, very friendly, cheerful and helpful. Our check in took a little while as there was some confusion with how Expedia works, but this wasn’t a problem at all, it was sorted in no time with a smile from the staff.
On departure we experienced quite different service. At 7.30am the girl at reception had her head on the counter and was trying to sleep. A gentleman connected to the hostel woke her when he noticed we had come downstairs. In a very drowsy manner she asked if we wanted breakfast, it was clear we were interrupting her sleep and really she couldn’t be bothered with us. As soon as she told the kitchen we wanted breakfast she then went back to snoozing at the desk.
After we had eaten we had to wake her to ask to check out, which again she made it clear that she would rather be asleep.
Granted 7.30am is early, however this girl was quite rude which was quite disappointing given how lovely the check in staff had been on our arrival.
OVERALL: Would recommend Emei Shan Hostel C as it’s good value and in a central location.
Make sure you pack your ear plugs.
