“Crowded, foggy”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2012

The hordes climbing the mountain were overwhelming. After hiking up for an hour, we also took an hour to descend the mountain because of the queues. And this was a foggy rainy day. There must be better views along the way up - don't focus on getting to the peak.

“One word: Majestic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2011

One of the top Buddhist holy grounds the massive statue of Samantabhadra is simply majestic. Weather was cloudy and cold we were lucky it didn't rain as it rained the night before.

“Beautiful if you can get to the top!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2011

We began the visit badly following a night in one of the worst, dirtiest hotels we have ever had the misfortune to stay in. The drive up the mountain to the park entrance and then to the cable-car station is up a typical tortuous but beautiful mountain road. You begin paying cash out again to get the car into the park then later there is a police check-point manned by distinctly unwelcoming, unsmiling officials where everyone other than the driver has to get out and proceed through a turnstile arrangement before being allowed to get back into your car. Fortunately there was not much traffic and this did not take long. We then got to the "real" entrance, parked the car and began the climb through the usual barage of Chinese Tourist Shops in pouring rain. There are quite a few monkeys to be seen on the way up, they are pretty well behaved and can be very amusing! Despite having taken medicine for hiking at altitude my wife still became quite ill and only just made it to the bottom cable-car station, it really is a good strong walk uphill. The cable cars each hold 101 people at a time and so although the lines were very long we only had to wait in line for about 15 minutes to board but it is a crush with everyone wanting a window view and the Chinese are not known for their patience and good manners in this sort of situation. Think of a 101 person rugby scrum without a referee and you will not be far from the mark. Once at the top station it is a relatively short walk up to the steps leading up to the temples. You can buy insense sticks at a booth here and pray on the way up.
It is a tradition here to take a padlock up with you and fasten it onto the railings - you and the love of your life then throw all of the keys off into the void to signal that you will remain together always - really nice idea!
Pay to get back into the cable car and then walk bak down again! There are "Sherpas" who will carry you up and down if necessary - my wife took advantage!
Again a beautiful place spoilt only by Chinese tourists spitting everywhere, throwing litter and smoking despite notices to the contrary............
