“The only place to stay in Kupang”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2013

After moving to Lavalon due to having a bad experiance at another hotel we fell in love with the place. Edwin, Emry and Jeremy are brilliant. What Edwin does not know really is not worth knowing about. We stayed for 12 days and had the best time they really know how to look after you. The food is great and they even make their own Burger buns for the home made burgers, Best in Kupang. We are coming back in 6 months and this is our first port of call.
The rooms are clean with hot water and you get a free pancake and juice for breakfast. And the wifi is the best around.
Thanks Edwin and the crew see you soon..

I was forced to stay in West Timor four days, waiting for my Timor-Leste visa. But thanks to Lavalon, it was a most pleasant stay. Lavalon Bar is THE place where backpackers meet and have fun - along with crazy retired Australians, who settled in Kupang. Edwin Lerrick, the owner, really sacrifices himself for the tourist and is working hard to make the hostel even better. Enjoy clean accomodation, cheap and tasty food and fast internet!

I was one of the first guests in the rooms of the new Lavalon Hostel and it was just perfect. The rooms were not quite finished yet but the owner Edwin let me stay anyway. The bed was the most comfortable one on my whole trip and I appreciated a "real" bathroom. The ocean view from the porch is stunning and I had more than one very nice chat with other tourists on the handmade bamboo tables and chairs in the bar. The Wifi helps and the pancakes in the morning are delicious and famous already. Edwin can help you with everything you possibly need and has a lot of interesting stories to tell. I will be back..

Me and my friend stayed at the Lavalon Hotel in September 2013. The room is the best we have had since we arrived in Indonesia, brand new king size spring mattress, a.c and fan, amazing hot shower and a window that opens right to the sea. Edwin, the owner, gave us all the information we needed for our travels around Timor, booked us flight tickets (for the exact same price quoted on the airline website), rented us a motorbike for 50,000 a day and prepared for us mouth watering beef burgers. The new addition of Mexican hammocks on the balcony is a real treat. There are 2 rooms and a dorm which also looked really nice so try to book ahead. If you weren't lucky enough to reserve one of these rooms you can stay across the road at the Lavalon B&B, which is also owned by Edwin and has simple rooms with shared bathroom, and wait until the nicer room becomes available. The restaurant outside the rooms has free wifi, really good food (already mentioned the burgers) and free book exchange.

Room Tip: Both rooms are exactly the same and have a double bed, the dorm has 4 beds

My friend and I stayed at the original Lavalon hostel, not the new one located at the bar/ cafe that overlooks the Ocean. We spent a week there and grew accustomed to both places and were extremely impressed by the helpfulness of all the staff. The older hostel, whilst not being the best looking of places, was very cheap (working out at about £2.50 p.n. or 40,000rp!). The beds were fine, especially in the dual bedrooms and the bathroom/ shower rooms were a cultural experience to say the least- they are quite literally a bucket with a water basin, It's a good experience and is to be expected for the price. The new manager is also a tour guide so get on his good books and he'll give you some mega pointers as to where's good locally and around Timor. IF however the idea of slumming it cheap doesn't do it for you head to the Lavalon bar which has been fitted with some bedrooms and is a lot cleaner looking and more western overall. Prices as far as we were aware are the same.

-Both places do bike rentals but the bar is cheaper.
-Edwin at the bar is a top source of Info.
There are loads of shops near by but if you want to save cash ask for the massive pink supermarket and theyll point you the right way.
BUY MOSQUITO COILS. :)

Room Tip: Try and book ahead, otherwise they may move you from room to room.

Due to Lonely Planet's top picks of hostels, we chose the Lavalon Hostel as the place to stay. The rooms have 2 beds and a shared bathroom, but for $5 it was a decent deal. Then we walked over to the hostel's seaside restaurant to use the free wifi and met Edwin, the owner. He told us the building we planned to stay in will be demolished in the near future, since the cafe also has a few rooms (and he is in the process of adding more).
Intrigued, we asked to look at the rooms. There are currently 2 privates and 1 dorm room. Everything is brand new. The mattresses in the private rooms are American standard. The ones in the dorms are thick European standard. Everything was high quality. The private rooms come with a bathroom - brand new European standard toilet and shower fixtures. I was slightly disappointed we hadn't seen it before we dropped our bags off at the other building.
After noting the longing in my eyes, Edwin finagled a way for us to move our things into his new rooms, which are fantastic.
We're in a private room, with an ocean view from the window. Privates start at 100,000 Rp for fan; 200,000 Rp for AC and 250,000 for AC plus hot water. The dorms are 50,000 Rp with a shared bathroom. The ambiance has the iconic seaside feel.
Edwin couldn't be more accommodating and inviting. He chats with you like you're old friends. He goes out of his way to make your stay an enjoyable one... and to make sure you're well fed!
We couldn't be happier to stay at Lavalon.
