“That Magical Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2013

I recently visited Dunagiri Retreat with 5 other friends and on the whole it was an amazingg trip!

I think some of the most uniquely significant things about Dunagiri Retreat would include its beautiful architecture (which is so close to nature, with the use of locally available stones and wood, and it feels as if every peach tree and rose creeper is perfect in its setting), breath-taking views (like the sunrise, sunsets, the mountain valley and the extensive green cover), Piyush uncle and the entire staffs caring and warm hospitality and absolutely delicious mouth-watering Indian food!
Activities around the place that we enjoyed were the long and short treks to the Dunagiri temple, Pandu Kholi and various caves. The bonfires at night and the night safari made the trip even more special.

We stayed there for a total of 4 days during which we taught the children who came for 2 hours after their regular school. For the rest of the day we usually went on treks or stayed in and played carom or frisbee. Honestly, I cant wait to go back to Dunagiri and relive that magical experience.

We were looking for a quiet and peaceful place for a family holiday.
Had zeroed down on a quaint little place in himachal , done our tentative booking there, and suddenly came across this website of Dunagiri.
And it was as if we were destined to go there, everything started falling in place and finally on a nice day of sep we were there.
Actually words are not enough to express the experience of Dunagiri. Still making an effort after almost 9 months of returning from there .
The place was serene and peaceful. The vibrations, wonderful.
The rooms were simple and elegant and all that one needed was provided for.
The food was finger licking. Panditji is an excellent chef. The Ginger honey tea can easily make you forget your favourite Jasmine tea.
The surroundings just beautiful. The harmony between human beings and nature is so obvious here.
3 nights went off in a blur. Next time it has to be at least 10 days.
An experience which will be with us for a long long time.
Looking forward to going back to this tranquil sanctuary alone, to spend time with myself.
The initiative of Piyushkumar, has all the things in the right place
His way of returning back to the society by organising a nice lively and warm teacher - Kalpana ji to come and teach the kids from the surrounding villages for an hour in the morning was so touching. Not too many people think on these lines today.
Dunagiri Retreat is somewhere we would love to go again and again.

In my whole month in India, this magical retreat sanctuary was my very favorite part of the whole journey which was great to begin with.
One can feel the love in every inch of the property and we were blessed with the most wonderful host Pandajit, who cooked for us the most divine cuisine, brought special tea to us first thing in the morning along with wood to warm our room all the way into the night. My friend and I felt like we were Goddesses in Paradise.
Of course, being so close to Babaji's cave and being guided there and able to sit/meditate by myself for an hour and half in my short visit was the icing on the cake for me.
Piyush has created a magnificent home away from home for all of us who seek to connect with the majestic nature of the Himalayas and the Spirit of Babaji and all who came in his contact.
Duganiri temple near by was also a very magical experience. I honestly can hardly wait to return again and again for years to come. A true Gem :))) Anna Krajec, Laguna Beach, CA.

If you're looking for real peace and quiet, with literally no other civilization near about, this is your spot.

The resort is a small set of cottages nestled in the hills in Dunagiri, which is about two hours away from any town of note (Ranikhet). Their idea of a welcome drink is juice made from local flower pulp. Their idea of a table cloth is pressed leaves and flowers from the garden around, neatly arranged in patterns under a plastic sheet. And their idea of entertainment is the exquisite view of the hills, lush greenery and nature all around you.

The whole resort, from the location to the building to the furniture, is extremely organic, as if it were just part of the surroundings, not a man-made structure erected within a jungle. The staff are extremely friendly and make you feel like you're in their home. The menu is home-cooked vegetarian food, that's simple but wholesome. The rooms are clean, the beds are warm and privacy is exceptional. The one bother is that while the bathrooms do have geysers, they can't manage a whole bucket of hot water, so you will need to ask the staff to bring in a hot bucket for you before you bathe. But given how friendly they are, it's not a bother.

I do need to point out, however, that there really is nothing to "do" here except take in your surroundings. There is one temple down the road which is a 400 step climb up, and you could go on treks or walks in the general area. But that's pretty much it. Also, there are no TVs in the rooms, either. So in case you're looking forward to a list of tourist attractions, this will not be your cup of tea.

That said, the bliss you experience is hard to put into words. You hear nothing but the sound of birds. At night, there is pitch darkness around, no twinkling lights except the stars. And the peace it brings you is fantastic! Head here if you're looking for a break from everything and some time to catch up on your reading and enjoy nature at its finest.

Room Tip: The rooms attached to the main building have a better view, and if there isn't anyone else aroun...

Ten days was too short a stay. I could have spent a month, and hope to do so another year. Where to begin describing how special Dunagiri Retreat is? I wanted silence and solitude for a spiritual retreat in the holy Himalayas. Here I found the perfect hermitage for my sadhana.

Location. Architecture. Original art. These three play together exquisitely. The five elements: earth, water, fire, air, akasha; ground and center harmoniously in the building, the room and the place. Although alone, I felt safe and undisturbed. Panditji, Giriji and the rest of the staff took care of me like a respected elder in their family. Overwhelmed with gratitude for their kindness, I don't begin to know how to thank them. Though I speak no Hindi, they understood and provided all that was needed.

Other guests came and went. There are enough outdoor places to rest, meditate, walk, play, be alone, or meet new friends. I spent much time in mantra, or resting in meditation gazing at the incredible views; snow mountains to the north, rolling Kumaon mountains to the east. I also took the walks to mountain tops, sages, temples and caves. The drivers who took me to the trails, and the guides who walked with me were great.

Never miss the dawn. Be out there to see the sunrise. Pandiji brings chai. The sky brightens, waves of mountains stretch before the eyes. Peace settles in the soul, and all makes sense again.

Dunagiri is an extremely green and serene place and provides excellent options for jungle walks and treks. The place also has a lot of historical and religious importance attached to it.Dunagiri Retreat with its cosy cottages and food that tastes just like home food, is the sole retreat in the area.I lived here for two days with my family and it was a completely different and a nourishing experience. Also one must know this place is not a typical commercial hotel/ resort.Only guests who can appreciate and care for natures beauty and are spiritually inclined should visit this place. They dont entertain any walk-ins.One must also understand that this retreat was build with the aim of generating employement and sustaining lives of people of the village. All the raw materials for construction and the man power have been sourced from the village itself. It is no less of a social organisation working for the welfare of the people.
Thank you very much Piyush and his crew for having us here and for the warm hospitality.

We have visited a good number of hill stations around the Kumaon/ Garhwal region over the last few years..... Very few places visited thus far comes close to Dunagiri Retreat, for the sense of bliss that we experienced.

The place clearly looks a labour of love of Mr.Piyush. He has developed the place more as a large home than a commercial resort. Each design/ piece of furniture seems well thought through, keeping in mind the guests that he would have. He is the epitome of the Indian belief of Athithi Devobhava.... The same thought seems to be imbibed in his assistants as well. Panditji and his hospitality is something words can't express sufficiently. It needs to be experienced. Giriji assists him very ably and seems always ready with whatever guests want.

We spent a few days in November 2012, my wife and I will always cherish every moment we spent at the lovely place. We hope to return to the Retreat once more in the future.....

Mr.Piyush's initiative in holding morning sessions to help children study and learn Yoga is well appreciated and was a novel experience.

Our sincere thanks to Mr.Piyush and his team for taking such good care of us.
