When in the Secunderabad, Ranigunj area, off MG Road, for over the past three and a half
decades, the first choice which comes in the minds of any famished soul, is this modest Gujju joint called Shree Shyam Nivas. This humble, enigmatic place with a dozen tables, seating close to fifty odd diners, at one time, occupies the street-level of an arcane, undistinguished building, in a nondescript bylane of Pan Bazaar, near the Gujarati Jain Temple.
The simple, pure vegetarian place has a legendary reputation for providing fresh, healthy, hygienic, good, tasty, hot, Marawari food cooked in ghee, that is copious in portions, yet very affordable. Their menu has under twenty items, not many bother to browse, as the perennial favourite is the their Thali, which is a wholesome feast of flavours, coming in an array of small katoris. There is a choice of five types of rotis, which come with three curries, one dal, some ghee-dripped rice, paapad, chutney, pickle, curd and sweets. All this unlimited, for a paltry Rs 100 or Rs 80 for the in-house residents.
The lunch and dinner time rush is a sight to behold. The place, a favourite among the local
Gujarati and Marwari business community, is always swarming with regulars at both times. The
service in this neat and clean eatery, is excellent, swift and efficient. It looks like, all are addicted to the great tasting food, coaxingly served with a generous heart, in an atmosphere suffused with the lingering aroma of pure ghee. One rarely gets seating, without a short wait.
A must have, in the summer mango season, is their famous "Aam Ras". This stimulating, pulpy magic, is priced at a meagre Rs 25, and is blended from a selection of the king of fruits, grown in abundance around here. It is an amazing hit, and many are known to consume two to three of them, during the day, as it is so irresistable.
They also have a cheap priced, lodging section with 22 non-ac rooms, priced per night at Rs 380 for double occupancy or Rs 200 for single occupancy.
Shree Shyam Nivas is a 'Must-Go-To-Place' if you are in that vicinity. It is an experience in taste, that will remain with you for a long time.
