“Fairly clean place to crash after the beach”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2009

Vlore is an up and coming Albanian beach town. The hotels are like those you would find at a low-end beach town in the U.S. The rooms are small, basic, uncomfy beds, few amenities, but right at the beach. New York had a decent restaurant and pool. While I was there a huge section lost electricity including the hotel so I had no hot water and little electricity. It's Albania - they're trying.

The beaches in Vlore range from busy to crowded. They are clean, which is most important. Some are sand, some rocks, some a combination. The water is clean and I swam. The nightlife in Vlore is good, as are the restaurants. Mostly this is a family-type destination.

Traffic was a huge pain. It took us 30-45 minutes to get to this hotel from the center of Vlore - 1 or 2 km away. There is the one seaside road and that's it.

Vlore itself is about 3.5 hours drive from Tirana on good roads. Perfect weekend getaway. There were lots of Europeans coming in from the ferries.

We spent three days in Valore, visiting with a former Albanian family whose roots are in that city. We stayed in the New York Hotel.
Valore is a seaside resort town with an attractive main street, and numerous hotels and restaurants. There is a central hill with a restaurant/hall on its peak with a wonderful view of the city and the sea.
The hotel was better than our expectations, with large rooms and terrace, cable TV, very comfortable. Staff was uniformly helpful and friendly.
Nearby restaurants, mostly variations on pizzerias, serve simple and tasty food.
Infrastructure is lacking, as it is in all of Albania. Traffic is somewhat anarchic, many roads in town are rutted.
Views of mountains and seas are abundant and spectacular.
There is a nearby archeological site called Apollonia, which is worth visiting. However, if you've been to Athens and Rome, Apollonia is not a reason to visit.
The road from Tirana to Valore is mountainous and winding with gorgeous mountain restaurants. We traveled from Valore to Saranda, a southern seaside resort.
Having visited from north to south, our recommendation is to approach Albania from Greece or Corfu, visit Saranda (and the impressive archeological site of Butrint) and Valore, and leave Tirana for future development.

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR BAG AT THE FRONT DESK. When I left my bag at the front desk, because I had a late checkout, they told me they would "take care of it". Instead they took care of my cell phone, and racked up an enormous bill.

BE CAREFUL.

I've been to Vlore on international folk festival in May, i traveld in a group and was participating in festival.
If you like balkan with a mixture of Italian and spanish coast than it's the place for you.
You can see beautifull beaches on the one side and big unfinished hotel buildings on the other.

The food is good, mostly italian food is served with lots of vegetables.
If you decide to go out in the evening there are a lots of beach clubs.
Hotel "New York" where I stayed in is 3 star hotel, it has an opend swimming pool wich is not cleaned daily, but ok. there is a beach near by, few meters from hotel, wich is clean and verry nice. Hotel stuff doesn't speak english, or bearley speaks. Rooms are ok, but prefer the ones with a see view.
All in all it is verry interesting and would recomend to visit to any openminded person willing to explore.

Officially 4* but in reality more 2*-3*.

Unless you really have to stay in the centre of town (noisy, busy, dusty) the Hotel New York is your best bet. It's efficiently run, although the housekeeping and maintenance can go a bit awry from time to time. Receptionists speak passable English and will change money with a bit of notice. The rooms are adequately furnished with satellite TV including BBC World and Aljazeera in English. The rooms with the sea view have a balcony and are to be preferred.

The roof-top pool is fine, though there are no depth markings and is unsupervised. There is a small, shallow, separate children's area with a central fountain. Although the pool is officially open from 10am until 6pm, access is rarely possible before 10.45am as the pool is cleaned each day from 10am. If you intend using a sunbed, be sure to be on it as soon after 10am as possible as the maintenance man removes unoccupied sunbeds if they are required on the small beach across the road. Leaving a towel on your bed is no safeguard against the bed being relocated.

Although there is no catering at the pool during the day, the area is tranformed into a bustling pizzeria in the evening, serving excellent thin-crust pizzas (but no salads, even though advertised) at around the £2.50 - £3 mark.

The ground floor restaurant provides a substantial inclusive breakfast and in the evening serves excellent mainly Italian-style fare at very reasonable prices. The Albanain wine available is good value and very drinkable.

There is a bar extending across the road. Drinks may also be had on the terrace outside the dining room. Ice creams and further bar facilities can be found at roadside tables.

The staff are friendly.

But all the while bear in mind that Albania is still very much a developing tourist destination and that local facilities are restricted and that the quality of the town's infrastructure leaves a lot to be desired.
