We have just booked a week at particles, this is the 5th time we have stayed there.it is so relaxing, mountain views, fantastic pool,a 10 minute walk with locals tending gardens and goats munching away with bells tinkling around their necks,to the harbour area with lots of lovely inexpensive restaurants.then sip a cocktail Sat out by the sea under trees with lanterns,ah bliss .walk back ( take a torch) or taxis are available hire a car as the scenery is amazing, and you just want to go back again and again.

Firstly I would say the hotel as a building is fine. It has a roof and walls with gaps in them so you can get in and out!
To be honest I've stayed in worse places in Greece.
There is a reassuring whiff of bleach around in the morning and everywhere seems clean.
If you come here don't expect any frills because you will not find them.
We aren't very sociable with Brits on holiday because we live with them all year. White socks and sandals abound here and everyone is very friendly but we like to be where we can't understand a word that is being spoken. We're not stuck up or anything, it's just the change we like.
Breakfast is basic and with the accompaniment of a Richard Clayderman CD every day and the smell of eggs there is the feeling of a care home. I couldn't eat for laughing at the 'Groundhog Day' feel of it all. I made us change tables every morning to confuse people. (Yes, I am simple-minded)
The owner (Basil) walks around watching over his empire in a very business-like manner. He is fine but at breakfast I felt like I would get my knuckles rapped with a ladle if I took too much juice and bread.
We had a car for our holiday we picked up at the airport and if you want to make the most of the island I would say this is a must.
Sami is the perfect base to travel around.
Sami itself was quiet, apparently because the Italian economy is buggered and they get a lot of tourists from that country.
Didn't go round the pool after the first afternoon because I heard someone discussing how much their house had gone up in value! Do me a favour!!
Antisamos beach is beautiful, so stay away!
The room was basic and the shower was very small for anyone other than a child. Clean sheets and towels as you would hope were regularly changed.
The so-called air con got the room temp down to the mid 90's.
Saying everything I like this place and we have booked for another retro-fortnight this year (2014).
Where else can you get all this entertainment, 70's breakfast with music from the era, nightly sauna, and gobby Brits for just over a grand for two weeks.
Who cares when you have everything on your doorstep to make a great Greek holiday?
I would choose this over any all inclusive faux holiday village any day of the week.
It pays to be more independent. Be frightened by driving up the mountains. Give a local farmer with his dog and shotgun a lift. Eat something you wouldn't normally try.
When you get home you will have so much more to talk about than the building you slept in.
I would recommend this place to anyone as the island is the star.

Room Tip: Rooms over the car park or the pool give the best mountain views.

We stayed at this hotel in June last year and having read the good and bad reviews we went with an open mind.

The rooms are basic and are in desperate need of updating, but for the price we paid, thought they were acceptable. We asked for a room with a balcony, as we didn't want to be on the ground floor and that is what we got. So good so far.

Our balcony, however, was above the outside breakfast area, so from 7am every morning we could hear the clinking of crockery and cutlery and the moving of furniture, (even through earplugs). We like to have a lie in on holiday, as we get up early for work every day at home, so being woken up at 7am every day wasn't good.

Breakfast was usual Greek fare: toast, hard boiled eggs, cooked meats, yoghurt, tea, coffee, juice. This was included in the price, but you could pay for a cooked breakfast if wanted. Can't comment on this, as we didn't bother with that.

The main reason for the poor rating is the owners' attitude.

Apparently Stelios and Vangelis, two brothers are the owners.

We tried speaking in Greek to Stelios and he would reply with a one word answer and then run off. He watched everyone all the time with a serious face and didn't try to converse with anyone. We had heard that his English wasn't very good, but he rarely smiled and certainly didn't seem to appreciate our attempts at speaking Greek to him. He was very unwelcoming.

Vangelis seemed slightly better, on the few occasions we were at the pool bar, although he was rather slimy- he greeted young teenage girls with "Hello Baby" or "Hello Darling"! Again he rarely smiled.

Pericles, the owners' nephew who served at the inside bar at night was also surly.

Nina on reception was an exception was very friendly and helpful.

Anyway, the first few days weren't too bad, but then the temperature soared and reached 42 degrees in the day and was still 28 degrees at 11pm. We had the sun on our balcony all afternoon, so the room just got hotter and hotter.

Not enough shade around the pool for the number of sunbeds. Guests were doing the German thing with towels to get beds with shade every morning. Majority of sunbeds were the hard white plastic type. Very uncomfortable.

We asked if we could hire a fan, as we knew from reading previous reviews that they won't put the aircon on until July. Nina told us there were no fans, so we asked where we could buy one and she gave us a few options. She asked us if we thought it was worth it and as we weren't sleeping because of the heat and being woken every morning at 7am, we definitely thought it was. Nina said she was still sleeping with a blanket on which we didn't believe.

It was 33 degrees in our room- we have a thermometer on our travel clock! We asked about paying for aircon, but as the system is so antiquated, they could only turn it on or off in all rooms at the same time and Nina said the reason it isn't put on until July is because Thomas Cook only pay for it in July and August. Ridiculous! We have been to Greece before in July and it wasn't as hot as this.

We had planned on buying a fan, as we were there for 2 weeks, but a couple we had become friendly with who were going home in 2 days told us they had a fan we could have. They had asked at reception and been given one with no charge but told not to tell anyone! On the morning they left, they brought us the fan, which was a godsend, as although it didn't cool the room down, it made it bearable to get ready before going out.

Great, we thought, at least we will be able to sleep now. After a day on the beach, we returned to our room, to find the fan had gone! I was so angry, I wanted to move hotels. Anyway we went to reception and caught Nina on the way. She took us over to one side and told us it was Stelios' own personal fan and the other couple who had left should not have given it to us. I was about to blow my top, when she said we could keep it, but not to tell anyone else and not to give it to anyone else when we left.

It did make it more comfortable, but can't believe in this day and age a 3 star hotel in Greece does not offer fans or aircon. We would have been happy to pay another £100 for aircon. The rooms and bathrooms, although clean are very old. The owners should spend money on the rooms, so they can charge more instead of the multi-coloured fountain by the entrance.

For the last 3 nights the aircon was actually put on from 5pm to midnight, probably because so many people complained and did help,it brought the room temperature down to 28 degrees- lovely, but as soon as it went off at midnight the room became hot again.

Can't believe so many people go back year after year. Have never known such unfriendly Greeks.

Well, have ranted on a bit, so will now tell you about the good points.

-Nice quiet position, about 15/20 minutes walk to the centre of Sami and the same to Melissani beach.

-Sami is a lovely quiet resort with a harbour.

-Best Taverna by far is the Mermaid- traditional Greek cuisine with very friendly service. The rep, Scott kept recommending The Dolphin, but we much preferred the Mermaid.

-Scott, the rep was very knowledgeable and informative.

-Melissani Beach Taverna is great- beautiful position and good food and service with a smile!! This is how a pool area should be. You do have to pay to go in the pool area and the sunbeds on the beach but worth it.

-Antisamos beach is fantastic and well worth the taxi fare.

-Highly recommend the "Fiskardo by night" trip- the included stop at Assos is wonderful.

-Highly recommend the trip to Ithaka- gorgeous.

-Kefalonia- gorgeous.

Only holiday I've ever had where I couldn't wait to go home to be cool. The lack of aircon ruined my holiday.

Love Kefalonia and Sami, but would never go back to the Pericles.

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel!

I bought this holiday as a last minute deal in summer and I have to say choosing to go here was the best decision I made. If you are looking to go to Kefalonia I would definitely say to go to Sami as it is so scenic and beautiful and incredibly relaxing.
The hotel was clean with plenty on offer for breakfast, though it did start to get a bit bland after 2 weeks.
There is the option to rent a fridge for the week for 25 euros, which might be useful as there are no cooking facilities, but eating out is not expensive. There are a wide variety of resaurants only 10 minutes walk from the hotel, all of which have extensive menus. I recommend familia and Blue dolphin. Also if you fancy a nice walk there is a lovely restaurant next to the pond about 15 minutes away.
The excursions are good value for money, I went on the island tour which was a full day excursion and you get to visit nearly the whole island, including both of the caves which were amazing! So if you only choose one excursion make sure it is that one.
The boat trip to the three islands is enjoyable as well and also a full day.
Scott, our rep, was absolutely wonderful and so knowledgeable about the entire island which was amazing and extremely useful, and he held a quiz night on the Monday which brought a lot of the hotel guests together and allowed us to make friends.
I would not recommend this area for families as there is not much to do for children, it is more for couples and anyone who just wants to relax. Kefalonia is absolutely stunning and if you are going to go to a Greek Island then it should be this one.

We visited this hotel in July 2013 with our 4 year old daughter. We had a great time. The hotel is typically Greek, if you've been to Greece before then you'll understand that the rooms are very basic but clean. For the price we paid, around £1300 for the three of us, for two weeks b&b inc flights, we just could not fault it. Admittedly when we first arrived, which was about 9pm we could smell cigarettes in the corridor and it seemed a bit grim, but we were very tired and come the morning, when we opened our balcony door and saw the beautiful scenery we were thrilled. We also had the warehouse view, which wasn't the best but how long do you spend in the room!! It was still a pleasant view with all of the lovely flowers outside. We walked to the harbour every evening, we took the back road, which was a lovely pleasant walk with an abundance of farm animals and the odd kitten.... my daughter loved it!! I wouldn't say this is particularly a family hotel, although there is a lovely childrens pool. In fact during our two weeks I'm sure there were no other children that stayed at the hotel, but it was out of school holidays. It would be lovely to see some swings there. This year we will be going in the school holidays, so I expect there will be more kids :) Breakfast was fine, fresh bread, jams, honey, eggs, ham, cereal, juice and coffee and tea, suited us perfectly. We love a Greek holiday, we have been to so many Islands now and have returned to only one so far (Lesvos), but will be returning to Kefalonia and the Pericles again this year. When you take into consideration the price of this holiday it amazes me how anyone can complain about any aspect of this hotel it is definitely value for money!! If you want a cheap holiday on a beautiful Island, in a quiet hotel, 10- 20 mins walk from a beautiful harbour, where all of the restaurants are extremely reasonably priced, then I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Perhaps ask for a pool view. But there aren't any horrible views really

This was the second time we have stayed at Pericles. We were worried about going back because we had such a fantastic holiday the first time we stayed that we didn't want to be disappointed when returning. We needn't have worried as it was every bit as good and we had a fantastic time again, the only regret we have is that we didn't return sooner. Stelios, Nina and Vangelis were lovely as we're the other staff. Our room was everything we needed and bedding and towels were changed regularly. This hotel is in a lovely setting and is peaceful which is one of the things we love about it. Stelios has things running very smoothly and works very hard to make sure you enjoy your stay. Nothing is too much trouble for him and he has a great sense of humour. Breakfast was adequate for us and we ate down by the harbour most evenings. There are so many tavernas to choose from and you can just sit and watch the world go by. There are plenty of places to walk or you can get a bus to the capital Argostoli or to the beautiful fishing village of Fiscardo or to Agia Efimia. The Fiscardo by Night trip is by far the best trip that Thomas Cook offer and also the trip to the island of Ithaca is really good too. We will definitely be back but won't leave it so long next time. Thank you to everyone at Pericles for making our holiday such a great one. It you want a relaxing holiday on a beautiful island then this is the place for you.
