“We laid down our heart in Moyo Mmoja Guesthouse & Bagamoyo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2012

We are a group of 4 friends who went to Bagamoyo for four months for doing our internship. We stayed four months in the guesthouse Moyo Mmoja (Kiswahili for 'one heart'). We are sure this is the best place to stay when your are in Bagamoyo. The staff is very friendly, they will help you with everything and will answer all the questions you have. Moyo Mmoja is situated in a great area of Bagamoyo, it is located in a quite area, but it is still near by the citycentre of Bagamoyo. The guesthouse has all the things you need to feel you right at home: a kitchen with all the things you need (cooking plates, an oven, a bread toaster, a fridge, a freezer, a coffee making machine, many pans, glasses, plates...), a living room, a veranda, a roof terrace, facilities to do your laundry, your own room... You also learn to know other travellers who are staying in Moyo Mmoja, what is really nice. When you stay for a longer period it is really cheap to stay here. We would definitely recommend Moyo Mmoja, because we felt very welcome over there and we loved the staff. What some travellers said before is indeed true: Moyo Mmoja is a home away from home! You will love it :). Kind regards, 4 Belgium girls

Nice and quite guesthouse with many volounteers staying for a few month. Also good for staying just a few nights. Rooms are clean and spacious containing a huge bed,a cupboard, a fan and a bathroom. Ideal base for exploring Bagamoyo. Friendly and helpful staff.Chilled atmosphere and great breakfast.

Stayed here for one rainy night on a two-day trip from Dar... this is apparently the only real tourist-oriented place in town (except for the expensive new Millennium Resort in the post office). It mostly caters for volunteers or other people who stay a bit longer than the usual tourist, so if merely travelling through you might feel a bit like an add-on... That said, the place is o.k. value for money, has good communal showers, a lovely roof terrace, and staff are very friendly. The setting is nice, too, in a leafy, quiet lane ca. 10 minutes walk outside Bagamoyo - staff take care to remind you that it's unsafe to walk there after dusk anyhow. Oh, and make sure that you bring a) lots of mosquito repellent and b) something to eat - there's a kitchen for self-catering, but no restaurant (nor anywhere close by).

I stayed at Moyo Mmoja for three months in 2011, doing fieldwork for my master thesis. At Moyo Mmoja I felt at home right away. I can without any doubt recommend this guesthouse. It’s located in a nice and peaceful area of Bagamoyo, yet close to everything you need. There is a lovely outdoor area, nice view from the roof, a shelf where you can find all kinds of treasures in the form of left-over books coming in all kinds of languages. It’s great to have a kitchen with everything you need and more space than just your room – this is actually a home. And best of all; the staff is very welcoming and nice! The money you leave here will also make someone very happy; because Moyo Mmoja is an NGO and the money from the guesthouse goes to their projects. I hope that I will come back to Bagamoyo one day, and then I’m coming back home to Moyo Mmoja.

Although not along the bach, the walk is only a short distance from this wonderful guest house....
So close to all amenities, in particular, Baga Point, where many of the locals gather and enjoy each other's company.
Never have I felt so good about the people as I did in Bagamoyo.
This Guesthouse was my favourite place to stay, as the staff were all very attentive and informative.
The luxury of the kitchen was a great bonus....There was also the option of having your clothes washed and hung to dry....honestly, my clothes never came as clean as they did at Moya Mmoja...thanks Momma Jackie...
One can olny feel safe with the Mosai guards keeping a watchful eye at night.....
Missing this place and the super friendly staff.......

Moyo Mmoja in undoubtedly the best budget accommodation in Bagamoyo. The rooms are great - big, clean, comfortable, well kept, with mosquito nets and fans. You can even get your own private "bungalow house" if you want. Staying at Moyo Mmoja is actually better than staying at one of the impersonal hotels, irrespective of cost, because the staff are so great there. The warm staff will instantly be your friends and expose you to a side of Tanzanian culture you would never have seen staying in a big hotel. They can also give you great tips of things to do in Bagamoyo - a fun, relaxing town. Most importantly, all proceeds from the guesthouse go to fund absolutely essential services for the most vulnerable individuals in Bagamoyo. Even though rooms are very inexpensive at Moyo Mmoja, a little money goes a long way in Tanzania, so your small room fee will do much to help those who need it most.

If you are anywhere near Bagamoyo, you should definitely stay here. The staff is helpful and friendly and the price can't be beat. I've actually rented a room for months at a time while doing volunteer work and Moyo Mmoja truly has become my home away from home. Their kitchen allows you to prepare your own food if you so desire, which is great when you want a break from ugali or rice and beans. There is also a cozy family room to relax in and a great front porch where you can unwind and listen to the crazy sounds of Africa. And, to top it all off, the proceeds from your stay at Moyo Mmoja go to homes for orphaned children!
My only disclaimer is to remember that this a guesthouse and not a resort. The rooms are simple, but clean. You will find a mosquito net, bedding, towel and fan, but you will not find AC or hot water. If you are looking for affordable, clean and friendly, then this is your place. If you are looking for luxury, try one of the beach resorts and pay western prices.
