“Beautiful grounds, disappointing service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

Idyllic gardens on the Indian ocean let down be lack of attention to cleanliness, dated rooms and poor food. Fixtures, linen etc. desperately needs upgrade. Beach-side security were asleep. Would struggle to recommend despite the average (but not cheap) price.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms not worn extra cost, barely see the sea.

Three nights, business, sea-side cabin

+ Great surroundings. Beach in front of one's nose.
+ Nice staff
+ Good food, nothing spectacular but prepared well. Prices are for tourists though

- Rooms are basic
- Holes in the bed nets which is not good in these regions with high malaria transmission! Please check room 105.

All in all, good value for money.

Very nice relaxing garden with scattered bungalows providing pricacy. The beach is a landing beach for fishermen but nice. Hot water works. Food is excellent. Staff very friendly. Nice place to cool your head off from the heat of Dar es Salaam's corporate life.

Stayed 3 nights at the end of a month long safari. Arrived Dar domestic terminal at 4:30 pm from up country. Took until 9:00 pm to reach the hotel. Awful journey in the dark. Advice, if not local don't attempt this drive at night when most of the 5 million people in Dar are trying to do the same. Hotel was really great about late arrival and served dinner even though kitchen was closing. Food was good. Beachside rooms are not because beach is actually public so the rooms are in the gardens. Rooms extremely basic with double bed, two bedside cabinets, two hard chairs and canvas deck chairs on the balcony. No screens so necessary to use the AC and can't really enjoy the balcony. The gardens are beautiful with colourful blossoms on the trees but nowhere to sit and enjoy this. Presume that this is also the campsite in season. The beach was full of rubbish and it's a shame nobody seems to care. The water was hot and at least here you can sort of swim. Very little to occupy three days in Bagamoyo. The sights can be done in one day. On the bright side the staff were really friendly and helpful. Just beware the "Tuk Tuk" tour guide. He's more expensive than the original quote. Shopping cheap but more stressful and pushy than at The Slipway in Dar Es Salaam.

We stayed here for camping for 1 night. There aren't a lot of places to camp in bagomoyo, but the price of 12 dollars for camping is to much. It was the highest price in all Tanzania and the website give different prices (maybe it should be updated). The ablutions aren't that great (poor shower with cold water, the toilets waren't clean) and the staff wasn't that helpfull (we asked about an electrical lead to extend ours and kept on waiting). It is a beautiful garden where you can camp and there is lots of shadow, but for the price, we expected a lot more...

Stayed at Travellers Lodge both with family and with a big group of 50 people. Evrytime it was a very good experience. There are almost exclusively pros: Staff is very helpful and friendly, food is excellent: local food as well as international (I remember the Bolognese ;-). The manager speaks both English and German, and the location is great and close to nature (often you see Mungos): the hotel area is a big garden, the beach is very beautiful (because the are a lot of fishermen with their boats it is not the cleanest, but good to swim for adults and children, lot of fauna to explore at low tide.
The 2 cons: payment only cash (that might cause some trouble because the only atm machine in Bagamoyo often is out of work) and there is no pool: but that is not important because of the beautiful beach.
You should go on a snorkel trip by a traditional dhau to a sand bank that is only accessable at low tide - around 1 hour by boat. Bagamoyo has a lot of old buildings to visit too - use Tuktuk (or Bajaji) for exploring the town (markets, old mission, ruins of Kaole, crocodile farm...)! When planning airport transfer take care for the traffic: at night you need around 60 minutes (maybe even less;-), during the day it might take you several hours!
The hotel offers free beach towels and free WiFi at the restaurant. To resume: it's the perfect place to start or to finish your trip to Tansania when arriving or leaving via Dar es Salaam.

We camped here as we were on a self safari. The price was double of any other campground we stayed at. If it was the same price as other camps we would not complain. But the shower was very weak, I nearly fell through the loose toilet seat. Service and staff was good. I asked if I could wash my truck and they washed it for me. Of course I did tip the lad who washed it. Maybe the rooms are a better place to stay if you come here.
