Owner description: It was once the largest copper mine in the British Empire. Today, the Britannia Mine Museum opens up a little-seen world that fascinates all ages. Just like miners did, visitors climb aboard a mine train and rumble into an authentic tunnel. Entertaining guides describe the workings of drills and tools from the past century. Every visit includes gold panning with the chance to take home frequent findings. A captivating 15-minute film re-creates the past and reveals how families turned their isolated surroundings into pleasant experiences. The Family Play Area keeps young ones entertained. A glittering gift shop offers unique stones and carvings. To get there, head north on the Sea to Sky Highway. 1/2 way between Vancouver and Whistler.

“A must to for visitors and locals”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

Have been here a few times, most recently on August 31st. The guided tour is a must-do; it really gives you an overall aspect of the process and history. The guides are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Even with the renovations, everything is authentic, rustic, and a little creepy (part of the draw for me). Our group was 3 adults and 5 kids ranging in age from 2 to 11 and everyone had a great time. Worth the trip for sure.

Even though the gold panning is a little kitchy, I still found myself sucked in and spent a good hour elbow-deep in the water. The kids loved the gold panning.

For locals, check your Entertainment Book for a 2-for-1 admission coupon.

“History at its finest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012 via mobile

Dint expect a long train ride, it's maybe 5 mins long. Wear runners as you do lots of walking. Lots of sights to see but you really need to have some interest in mining to be there. They offer gold panning which my kids really loved but they didn't care much about all the machinery and tools. They enjoyed the trip to the location regardless and thought going in the tunnel was cool. There's a small play area and a tiny selection of food and drink items available.
Worth the trip for the scenery and spending time together and learning some B.C. History. Not a family friendly prices but it's average compared to most "family" rates.

“Eye opening history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2012 via mobile

Had seen a commercial for this on tv and decided to make a visit two days later.

Quite the drive from home, but we thought it was a fantastic experience. The mine tour was incredible. Our tour guide, Lara, was very informative, funny, and above all concerned for our safety. She answered all the questions I had.

The history of the area was great to learn and it really puts our daily life into perspective. The panning for gold was fun. Yes you will find gold, but nothing bigger than the tip of a ball point pen. No nuggets here. The movie is worth a look and all the exhibits are cool.

The tour guide said that eventually they are going to be operating tours of the mill building for adults only. I think we might go back when that happens because that building is really cool inside.

This is a great attraction.

“A must do!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012 via mobile

Drive down from Vancouver for the afternoon, took about an hour. The recently did a $6mil reno, and it shows! The guide and other staff were super friendly, and you get to pan for real gold! Tunnels were pretty cool, authentic, really gives you an idea of how difficult the work was for the miners.

“Friendly, Fun, & Unique”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

Completely unique experience and the tour guide (Laura I think) was knowledgeable and funny. Loved the panning for gold at the end. Special thanks for the cooperation of the staff in planting some gold leafs from the gift shop in my nephew's pan in order for extra excitement. Mining machinery art gallery was also very interesting and fun to wander through. Extra bonus and 5 gold stars to the staff who shipped my favorite sweater to me in the States that I forgot there during the gold panning eureka moment.
