“Excellent Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2014

A Serene and beautiful location on backwaters. The villa with swimming pool is an amazing architecture. The highlight is the bathroom with open sky. The food is excellent. You don't miss the Ayurvedic Massage there. Finally, the wholesome experience becomes wonderful only because of the hotel crew there. Awesome friendly people! I am waiting to go again soon...

The taj kumarakom is a resort set on the banks of the Vembanad backwaters. We traveled as a family of 6, with my mother (75), sister (50), daughter(8) and nephew (16) in December 2013. The resort is fairly small with only 28 suites on site. The check in process was easy and the staff are very welcoming, but apparently includes a tour of the property with detailed explanations of the ceremonial aspects of their rituals and facilities. It was very sweet and probably directed towards the indophile tourist, but being a goal oriented American, I was slightly impatient with the drawn out process.
The rooms are semi detached rustic themed cottages overlooking a pond They were very comfortable, but as with most places in India, including the "luxury" hotels, the infrastructure is good but the finish lacks attention to detail and maintenance is sub optimal.
There are lots of activities for all age groups, including fishing, boating, geese, fish and turtle feeding, pottery and yoga classes and ayurveda spa services. The activities director is excellent and really makes an effort to engage the kids in activities every evening. The manager is very interactive and makes an effort to chat with each guest at least once a day.
The food is good and the wait staff are very pleasant and eager to please. Room service is a little slow, particularly for morning coffee and tea, but this may just be the general indian obliviousness to time.
It is a little on the pricey side, but this seems to be par for the course in India where basics are considered luxuries and a Raddison is considered a 5 star hotel.
Overall I would definitely recommend this place and would certainly stay there again.

So on Christmas eve my aunts and uncles decided to go to Taj Vivanta for Christmas dinner, while the property is very beautiful the dinner was a total disappointment. 1. The food was just very very average and 2. we got a bill of appor $600 for 5 adults which was ridiculous. The evening was just not worth this much money. We would have been OK if the cost included some cocktails or entertainment but there was nothing worth it. We came back feeling cheated about the evening. I travel a lot and have seen many great hotels but nothing left me feeling this cheated. I would not recommend Taj in Kumarakom to anyone.

When me and my wife decided to have a relaxing vacation with no site seeing or scheduling days with holiday agendas especially with our one year old infant, we started searching for resorts where we can just go relax and throw away our watches, hide away our cellphones and not log in to our e-mail, basically sign out from our busy schedule for a while and we hit the jackpot with this resort.

This is the closest you can get luxury to meet nature and get the best of both worlds. This is a beautiful property with just 28 rooms. So you will never feel it crowded and you will always feel the service personalized. It is situated on the shores of a massive lake, which looks almost like a sea and is also situated next to a bird sanctuary

We had booked the basic cottage for 3 days and the check in was a breeze and we were taken to our room in less than 5 min of entering the hotel. However there was some work happening on adjacent cottage to us and we were not concerned with the dust/sound from that work, so when we spoke to the general manager next day and raised this concern we were immediately offered to be moved and were upgraded to a Villa

The rooms have this rustic/authentic design reflecting the heritage status of the hotel. From the furniture to electrical fittings everything is old school. The rooms have a TV with limited channels and a stocked minibar. The Villa has an outdoor bath + shower and a sit out area facing a small lagoon.

Food is excellent, while the breakfast buffet is nothing out of the ordinary in terms of the spread, everything tasted good, what we really enjoyed was the seafood during lunch/dinner.
The seafood is outstanding and we really enjoyed every single seafood dish that came out of the kitchen. There is no buffet option for lunch/dinner which we felt was a good thing as we went a little adventurous with the menu. The traditional live music/performances complimented the dinner very well and created a very serene ambiance. The in room dining was also prompt and food always hot. What we also liked were the special something’s we received every day, a couple of home made chocolates left behind by housekeeping or the free desert that we received or simply the ice cream and fruits served near the pool area. We really appreciated these small gestures

Activities in the resort included boating in the lagoon, feeding the geese, rabbits, fishes, some pottery/clay workshops, evening boat rides with tea and snacks. The hotel also celebrated special occasions of their guests like anniversaries, birthdays with cake cutting which is a very nice touch. They also had some fun activities organized in the evening for all the guest which included tug the rope and a modified version of musical chairs

Overall we had gone with the aim to relax and be pampered and Taj Vivanta had met our aim. Special thanks to the General Manager Jayanta Das and his team for making our visit a very memorable one

I traveled with high expectations because of several reasons- Taj property, great reviews on trip advisor, kerala and so on. The place is nice but one does not experience Kerala ( as expected). To begin with I had booked it because reviews said there were activities for kids. To be honest, it was very basic and run down approach to kids. It seemed like they were targeting kids who had not seen ducks or fishes. It was a very unenthusiastic approach to planning for children activities. Cycles are poorly maintained and the activity area is run down. The staff tries to do its best to please the guests. The gift shop was boring ( considering the range of things Kerala produces, you could have bird nests, plants, coir baskets). Between 12.30 to 5pm there is nothing much to do. The diya lighting speaks of tokenism..perhaps its being going on for many years now without much change. The place could do with improvements in interiors, landscaping and improvement in activities at the resort. One evening we did have some action thanks to a birthday party and the boat ride on the Vembanad was the only solace. On the whole, a disappointing holiday. Food was average and so was the spa.

Room Tip: Room facing the lagoon is a good option..atleast you see the birds and their activities.

The welcome was brilliant typical localized welcome with Coconut Water and Palm Leaf Necklace. The Rooms were strategically placed around the lagoon area. Bakers bungalow was majestic. The Sunset Cruise is a sure to do which is followed by Chayakada. The Deluxe villa is a awesome room to stay that comes with a open bathroom where you bathe and admire nature at the same time. Also as the Taj shares a wall with Kumarakom you will get breath taking views of different migratory and Indian birds Kingfisher, Cormorant, Pond Heron, Egret to name a few. Children too will enjoy themselves with the Mr Ragreean who is in charge of the activities these include Geese, Fish & Rabbit feeding which happens inside the premises of the hotels other activities include row & paddle boating. Meeting a local fisherman who takes you to through the canals of Kumarakom is a must do. Speed boat ride from Taj Hotel to catch your flight from Kochi will leave you spell bound. We would like to thank GM Jayanta Das & Mr Aaron for being so courteous and helpful during our at the Taj.

Room Tip: Lagoon Facing rooms with open bathrooms.

It is a very unusual hotel..on a heritage old site. Has a small lagoon inside where diya lighting is done every evening. The rooms are fabulous and the best was when they upgraded us to villa. the whole house is a room..and is awesome..with old styled dressing tables to old big clock. It is indeed a very different experience. The evening beside the lakes are great and really enjoyed the classical performances happening over dinner dining area.
