“Luxury hotel on the lake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2014

I will echo what everyone else has said about this hotel. It is in a very beautiful setting and the grounds are well kept and clean. It is a good option if you want a slick, luxury type of hotel stay on the edge of Lake Vembanad. The rooms are cool, spacious and comfortable . Breakfast buffet is very good indeed, particularly the south Indian choices . The best part of the evening buffet are the amazing pickles, all made to local recipes. The pools are lovely and everything is very clean. Staff are friendly. We enjoyed the free sunset cruise, the delicious tea snacks and a magical early morning speedboat ride with Reni which was well worth the R2500 price.
Service was responsive and efficient.
We took the hotel bicycles for 3 consecutive mornings and had fantastic adventures exploring the backwaters by ourselves.
These are the pros.
As for the cons :
1. The lovely large jacuzzi in our pavillion room was stone cold and had no mechanism to heat the water . It thus was unusable.
2. Evening buffet was very expensive at R2200 per person
3. The a la carte restaurant food was expensive and inedible. Dreadful fish heated in a gloopy sauce was passed off as Meen Pollichattu.
4. We were conned into paying our final bill in UK pounds by not being given a choice. Beware being simply handed a terminal asking for a PIN and check the currency you are paying.
5. When they have an event it is very disrupting eg loud music until 11pm or one of the restaurants or the evening entertainment being dedicated to the event attenders only. This happened each night of our 4 night stay.
6. The spa is more ayuvardic medicine- centred than pampering type. Not our thing.
7. There is not a very good selection of local trips and taxi prices are eyewatering. Either have your own driver or do some research in advance. We opted for a local village experience canoe boat trip which we booked ourselves by phoning the number on one of the green signs outside the hotel building. It started at a boat dock less than 2 miles away and the hotel quoted us R800 each way for this journey. Even the hotel travel desk lady quoting this had to laugh. We easily hailed a tuk tuk outside for R50. This trip is organised by the local state tour agency, Responsible travel.

So, great luxury hotel and a safe choice. But be aware of the downsides and ideally have your own car and driver to make the best of the area.

We had just a one night stay at KLR having been dropped at the jetty by our rice boat. The welcome was lovely and we were upgraded to a meandering pool villa which was a nice surprise. The resort is beautiful and our room amongst the nicest we've stayed in - spacious, tasteful, very clean, with an incredible outdoor bathroom, and private access to the huge meandering pool. There are a great range of complimentary activities including clay pot making, and chai and snacks on the lawn which were lovely touches. Food was very good, but staff were over attentive - we got asked how our food was 6 times in the space of 10 minutes - I barely had chance to take a mouthful!

I feel the stay was let down by being stung for other services. I understand this is an exclusive resort and I accepted that premium prices would be charged, but I don't see why this should mean charging such extortionate prices for things. A Kingfisher beer was Rs400 and my partner got a few in Kumarakom village for Rs70. We asked for a quote for a taxi to Chertala train station and was told Rs1700 - there's a sign just outside the gate advertising Rs500, and we ended up getting one for Rs300. Food too was quite expensive for what we got, and at a luxury resort, I expect at least some free wifi. They wanted Rs750 for 24hr! The room was actually good value for money, but we couldn't afford the little luxuries which would have made our stay perfect which was a shame.

Room Tip: We had a meandering pool villa. I would say this is a good choice if you want to swim a lot, but we...

I can't tell you how beautiful this place is. You have to see it to believe it. You don't feel you are in a hotel but rather that you are living amidst a beautiful village paradise. The theme is very natural, we're talking the most gorgeous sunsets and natural beauty surrounds you in a very raw form. Don't miss the free snacks and homemade chai/coffee stall they make outside near the bridge. There is a nice game room where you can play pool and carum; a free ayurvedic consultation; excellent room service and food choices; a free sunset cruise with live music; and free pottery/weaving classes; yoga in the morning as well. The only downside we felt was that there are a lot of mosquitoes during dinner -- so you have to either sit deep inside the restaurant, or you can order in house room service. As for the rooms, we stayed at the Luxury Pavilion Room -- had jacuzzi inside the room -- the bathrooms are huge and spacious and clean, and the actual room is even more gigantic. The rooms are beautiful and we also had an outdoor veranda. The doors have an old fashioned touch, with real lock and key, and the theme is very authentic. Will definitely return! Service is great as well, everyone is very helpful and considerate.

Room Tip: Don't forget to opt for in-house room service as a convenient option!

After three weeks of travelling in India, it was delightful to take a break from our hectic itinerary and relax in such a beautiful resort. Staff was lovely, setting perfect (especially our own infinity pool outside our bedroom), special dining room food excellent.

Room Tip: Definately villa with pool

After a less than stellar visit to Periyar, we told our driver to head straight for our next hotel. We didn't realize we were going to be at such a lovely resort. We were greeted warmly, given an amazing room, with the biggest indoor jacuzzi I have ever seen. We had our own terrace. The grounds were lovely, the food excellent, service was wonderful. My only recommendation would be to not get the buffet unless you can eat a fair amount. It was expensive, everything we tasted was excellent but neither of us ate enough to make it worth it. They have a lovely menu. Tea in the afternoon. A wonderful place.

An amazing experience. They know how to treat their guests!

Had booked a Heritage Villa with Private Pool. Big, Clean, Authentic Wooden Style Rooms, Open to sky shower. Nice and clean plunge pool with jacuzzi.

Wanted to stay 3 nights but could get reservation only for 2 nights, though kept trying for the 3rd night till the end.

everything of this resort was amazing. Right from the room, dining area, food, greenery, lake, infinity pool. the best part was the staff - their courteousness friendliness and their endeavour to serve the guests instantly. We have a 2 years daughter who would never sit at one place for any meals, the staff at their multi cuisine restaurant were so friendly with my daughter they would take care of her while we could finish our meal.

Its a huge property with much open spaces and nice located sitting arrangements that would face the lake, the green land etc. The best location to have a relaxed and peaceful evening is the lying on the hammock next to the infinity pool.

Would definitely like to come again.

PS: If the management is going through this post, hope the drain in room number 111 inside the plunge pool has been fixed. I got a cut in my toe and bled because of it. I had complained at the front desk.

The hotel has real quality and we should have had a great stay but.... We had Room 125. All windows are overlooked by paths or public areas. The room is at the public buildings end of the meandering pool and had nowhere private to sit. As we had to keep the blinds drawn a lot, it was dark. We asked to move but were told there was no availability elsewhere in the hotel. Room 127 onwards are ok and a lot more private.

The seafood restaurant was lovely but the food was not brilliant. We have had better elsewhere. The ambience of the hotel is great, it is well maintained and the backwater trip is interesting. We have seen more imaginative swimming pools.

An oddity was that Trip Advisor is blocked by the guest's wi fi agreement with the Hotel! Why? It is not as if anything bad is being written! Would have loved this hotel if we had been in a better room and feel disappointed. I am not coming to Kerala again, so this was my only chance! It was blown!
