“KLR-The King of Backwaters”

The Kumarakom Lake Resort is a very good resort and is also very close to nature. I went to this resort during winter last fortnight and hence had almost no problems with the humidity and other weather problems faced often by the people visiting here.there were no insects as well. Travel agent , Antilog Vacations , fabulously arranged the 6 day backater tour selecting nice hotels, houseboats decent drivers etc at very reasonable prices & just as expected

This resort is a vast resort with sprawling green cover all around and serves an absolute treat to its guests. The beauty of this resort is also unmatched. The lagoon of this resort is also very good. They also have house boats docked up in their backyard. The rooms at this resort are also very well maintained and also boast of all modern amenities required. Even though the rooms have the look of ancient times they do not lack in any facility.

The staff here is also very good and tries its best to help us in every way possible. The balconies attached to the rooms are also big in size and provide an amazing view of the central pool and the green cover of this resort. This resort also has good cottages attached with a personal pool that exudes privacy and leisure. This resort never fails in providing facilities for every age group and hence is a famous resort among masses.

The Jacuzzi is also very refreshing. The spa facility is also very good and not burning a hole in the pocket!! Their rooms are large enough to accommodate upto 4 people. The food here is also very good and worth trying. The room service is also very efficient and is immaculate too. The in house dining is good too. The only drawback I saw was the distance from the airport as I had to commute a lot to reach here. Except that, excellent resort.

We had a great three night stay here. This is a true hideaway from the busy commercial world we're all surrounded by. Kumarakom has a very special and unforgettable flair to it. The place brings to mind a beautiful India of old. The resort sits on acres and acres of lush green, with every building telling its own story as a part of one of the traditional homes of prominent Keralite families; brought over here and then rebuilt as a part of the resort itself. The wooden architecture is absolutely exquisite and reflects the beauty of this state.

And really, whether you're a family, on your honeymoon, or just coming to relax, this resort has something for everyone. We stayed in one of the lovely and very well kept villas and loved those late night swims in our own private pool. My little girls also enjoyed doing pottery, fishing and the afternoon snacks and sunset cruises were definitely favorites (all complimentary). And I cannot praise the staff enough - they were wonderful with our kids and my little one talks about them even today. And we loved the dishes, ranging from vegetarian, to all kinds of fish and meats, with most being dishes popular throughout India and a number of Western dishes as well. We also appreciated the calm and serene nature of the place; taking it in through evening walks in the gardens surrounded by the small ponds and quaint bridges. Really I cannot say enough about this place as our experience here has been nothing but pleasant and enjoyable and we would love to be back again.

We had an overnight stay on a houseboat in this resort. The whole experience was awesome until we went to bed. We had a one bedroom boat with 3 dedicated staff - two drivers and a chef. The food on board was spectacular exceeding our expectations. The staff in general were pleasant but unobtrusive - I would have liked a bit more commentary about the back waters have breath taking views which made it unnecessary. The breakfast was served in the hotel - also great and we had no issues with service.

The main problem was the air con unit in the house boat bedroom which didn't work. We pointed out that the bedroom was very hot before we set off. We hoped it would improve with time aboard - it didn't. The room was sweltering this hampered sleep. When we arrived back because everything else was so good we didn't complain but the boat staff must have let the hotel management know. They we very apologetic and comped our wine with out us even asking!

The resort looked stunning we would definitely stay there in the future.

Room Tip: On airboat check air con before you set sail!

The resort calls itself the last paradise on earth…any resort that claims that has a hell of a lot to live up to….
So here we go. First the good points: A nice room, very clean and with a good air-con opening up onto a small patio where you enter the meandering pool. The resort location on the lake is quite pretty and the lovely breeze in the afternoon was welcome. The food in the restaurant was excellent. Afternoon tea & snacks on the lawn whilst watching the sun set was a nice touch. As was the late afternoon cruise.
Critical points: most of the resort is pretty much developed and each space allocated. If you want to get away from other guests or staff for example there is nowhere to go but the confinement of your room or patio. When we visited there was a wedding on the Sunday afternoon, the organisation of which (building the gazebo, putting out chairs, tables, catering) made the resort noisy. The bathroom is outside which means during the night you have to go out, put the light on and hope that the mosquito's don't get you!
Alcohol in the resort is prohibitively expensive (625 rps for a glass of wine). If you spot a group of French people drinking beer then you know there is a problem with the wine. Even at a boutique hotel in Fort Cochin a glass of wine (320 rps per glass) was half the price of what was charged here. Service in the restaurant we slow, you’d be lucky if you had your morning coffee by the time you’d eaten your breakfast. This was not a one-off incident, but occurred throughout our stay.
Upon checking out at 5am staff insisted on doing a room check which involved counting the items in the minibar, lifting the plastic lid off a can of peanuts to check the seal had not been broken. At this stage I had already responded to the question from reception if we had used anything from the minibar. In my experience, these things are always done on trust. It just showed that Kumarakum does not know its customers very well.
So going back to the first sentence of this review, this resort does not live up to its superlative claim. Having stayed in resorts in Thailand and the Maldives where we could not fault a single element of our stay we feel that Kumarakum has some way to go to know what their international guests want.

We had a wonderful stay here for 2 nights. The resort feels large enough to wander around and very safe. The beds were so comfortable and the outdoor bathroom was a wonderful twist. Every detail has been thought through and is always perfect. Staff are extremely helpful. There is so much to do (no extra fees either) such as fishing, boat rides, pottery and weaving. The pools are wonderful. I highly recommend this place!

If you are visiting kumarakom, nothing better than staying here. It's ultimate luxury. The rooms are well done maintaining a fine balance between traditional Kerala architecture and modernity. If not the meandering pool villas, take the villas with the private pool. The resort provides a complementary boat ride around the vembanad lake. On the boat ride they have a gentleman who plays live flute, plus the sunset, makes this an amazing experience. The spread on the buffet is too good n if u love seafood, you'll flip. Although I went there in Jan 2012, I'm raring to go again.

What can I say ? Team Kumarakom have got everything right, we spent 3 very memorable days here in the last week of January. The feeling one gets from the moment one steps into the resort is 'We Care'. The personalised attention given to each guest is something that needs to be seen to be believed.
Food quality is very good, there is daily entertainment in the evenings, a sunset cruise and an excellent spa.
Staff is extremely courteous and friendly, and willing to walk the extra mile for you.
All said and done a resort we will definitely be back in sooner than later.
