“Stunning Lake Kumarakom”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

We drove there from Cochin and then Thekkady as part of a private tour arranged by the hotel. Our driver James was excellent and very informative and what a driver !
At the resort there is an air of calm and tranquility which has a strong resemblance to Balinese architecture. It is a spacious resort, quiet and very relaxing. The meandering pool villas are gorgeous especially if you can get one near the lake. From there butterflies hovered overhead, otters were bobbing up and down in the lake, birds and wildlife were in abundance. The pool was irresistible so we went spent much of the time in it. The houseboat trip run by the hotel is well worthwhile, it is an exclusive trip per couple or family, you are waited on on all the time and meals prepared on board, the bedroom mirrored the one on land, with airconditioning and fan, TV and DVD. The cruise take you across the lake and you moor for the night on the shore edge so you can take a little walk. We had a narrow escape as a huge coconut fell to the ground just by us making an enormous bang, and thankfully we had just returned to the boat. We are told coconuts kill more people around the Indian Ocean than any sharks ! The water in the lake (2nd largest lake in India) is apparently quite pure, it is only about 12ft deep and flows constantly. During the monsoon season completely refreshes and cleans itself but we didnt risk a swim in it.
Service at the resort in the restaurants was occasionally a little hit and miss and often you had to ask several times for things but everyone was so polite and helpful you couldnt get cross ! One waiter Johnny needs a special mention. Food was good, but not gourmet, there was plenty of choice. The Ayurvedic Spa was sensational, the doctor there very helpful and I took some remedies home for my grandchildren's endless colds and coughs. Our internet connection was very hit and miss, and the power seemed to surge on and off frequently, but you got used to it.
Definitely worth a stay if you are in Southern India.

A great place to relax and enjoy. Service levels, rooms, food, grounds and pool were all amazing. The KLR team were all friendly and gracious. As an example, one team member noticed that my son was not eating and he took the time to come over and ask if anything special could be made that my son would enjoy more. I have never experienced this sort of care and concern in a hotel. I was astounded and very impressed.

As you pull up to the entrance after passing through the enclosed gate, there is an attractive wooden sign that says. Kumarakom Lake Resort, with the words posted below: Perhaps the only paradise on earth.
Well that statement pretty much sets the tone for what you’re in for.
You’re welcomed by neatly dressed attendants and your luggage is taken care of and delivered to your room. The reception area is open on two sides, with a beautiful view of the lake and seafood restaurant in the background. There is a large circular ceramic container sitting in a recessed area within the reception area that has colorful flower pedals floating in water and are meticulously placed.
Fresh coconut is brought to you as a welcoming and you can savor the delight of the fresh coconut water. The attendant is happy to split your coconut shell open once your finished, so that you can enjoy the fresh the meat inside.
Once you’re registered you are free to roam around the gardens or head off to your rooms. We chose to take advantage of the daily, afternoon coffee & tea being served by the lake. Every day from 4 to 6 pm they serve free coffee, tea and delicate snacks.
You have to meet Jose’ there, where he will pour you two meter tea or coffee, without spilling a drop! The snacks are made fresh on the spot and they feature: battered & fried banana, coconut & rice cakes and another delicious treat that had an incredible zest to it. You will want to have more.
This is also a great location to watch the nightly sunset, or take the free sunset cruise leaving from the landing only a couple hundred meters away.
Once we finished our coffee, we headed to our rooms and the porters followed us with our luggage. There are several types of accommodations to choose from. We chose the Luxury suites for our stay. The rooms are spacious, with their own hot tubs. Some of them over look the grounds and lake.
There are private villas with their own personal pools or you can choose from the villas along the meandering pool. In the case of the villas by the meandering pool, every room has their own access right off the living room with steps leading into the pool.
Regardless of what you choose, you will be very happy.
The grounds are very well maintained, lush and spectacular.
There is an area on the grounds, that they often have private functions being held. This would make a great location to host a wedding party, or other private function.
Our first night there, we booked for dinner at the Seafood restaurant. There, you have a choice of sitting next to the water or in the covered open air portion of the restaurant. They have a great selection to choose from on the menu.
My wife is not fussy about fish plus she has an allergy to shell fish. With that in mind, she still found something on the menu that she totally enjoyed and the chef was certain to make sure that her meal was not contaminated.
The next morning was an absolute treat. The complementary breakfast is to die for. This is not just an everyday breakfast. This is a buffet that has absolutely everything. You can have eggs if you choose, cooked to order, or absolutely get lost in the wide variety of foods to choose from.
We found that dinner was no disappointment either. You have a choice of ordering from the menu, or helping yourself to the buffet. The buffet dinner is worth paying the little extra, over ordering from the menu.
The attire is casual, so you don’t have to dress up for dinner if you choose not to, but no bathing suits are allowed. I always enjoy getting dressed up a little anyway, but casual pants and shirt work fine. Suit and tie is not required.
During our stay, we got to meet Sreejith (from the food and beverage team). He took pride in showing us what was on the buffet, which features cuisine from various parts of the world. The selection is incredible.
You could have fish cooked to order right in front of you and they would even deliver it to your table. Now that is certainly more than you would get at any other buffet than I have been to.
The chef’s at this resort seem to take great pride in how they prepare their meals. Everything that I had to eat was delicious. You will think you have died and gone to heaven.
Remember Jose’ who served two meter coffee at afternoon tea, well you can have him create your own frothy coffee or tea on the spot, during or after our finish your meal.
There are plenty of staff on hand to look after you and you will find them very pleasant. There is always a smile on their face and they want to do whatever they can to help.
If you are a spa person, well they have just about anything that you want. The girls booked full massages and my buddy & I booked for pedicures. I gotta tell ya, that my friend had never had a pedicure before and he was very reluctant to do so. I think the only reason that he booked was because of me.
The girls and I had appointments for the same time frame while my buddy was scheduled right after me. Okay, old timers is kicking in and I forget the name of the guy that did my pedicure, but he did a really great job. When I was done, my friend was waiting outside and he asked me how it was. I reassured him that he would very much enjoy it.
Off he went, when the room was ready and I waited outside for him to finish. During that time, the girls emerged looking fresh and vibrant. Their massage was a little different as they each had two women working simultaneously on them. Both said that it was incredible.
After about 45 minutes, my friend emerged. The great smile on his face said it all, you could tell that he really enjoyed his pedicure. He said that he had never had one before and that it made his feet feel great. Koodo’s to our guy!
One thing that you must do while at Kumarakom Lake Resort is take the back water boat tour. It is a power boat that seats 6 people ( wide and flat and roof covered ) It only has a 9.5 horse outboard motor on it, so you don’t have to worry about getting tossed out of the boat.
The tour takes you out into the lake to a nature preserve and into the small rivers and tributaries that lead into the lake. You get to experience life as it is on the water. There is tons of birds and wild life that you get up close and personal to. The water lilies are magnificent and it is absolutely a photographers dream. Bringing your camera is a must.
This boat tour runs daily, starting at 7:30 in the morning and lasts two hours. It is worth every penny and if we are fortunate enough to visit Kumarakom again, I would book it again, every day that we are there.
From a photographers stand point, the 7:30 am tour is the time to book, as the morning light is the best and the activity on the water is what you want. ( We went in January ), so times may change as the morning sun rises earlier as you get into the year. Check with the booking agent at the desk for departure times.
The only unfortunate thing about our visit to Kumarakom Lake Resort is that it wasn’t long enough. We had booked for a two nights stay as we were working other things into our trip. I think this resort deserves a minimum of three or four days or longer if you can.
This is one of those spots that you get to relax and just enjoy yourself.
Coming directly from Cochin airport, you can expect a 2 to 2.5 hour drive to get to the resort.
If you had a driver take you to the resort, they have accommodations to look after their needs while they wait for you. So they really have tried to think of everything and everyone.
This is one place that I would love to come back to. I will tell my friends about it and hopefully, they have an opportunity to visit and enjoy their stay as much as we did.
Well done Kumarakom!

We stayed at Kumarakom Lake Resort in January 2013 and cannot rate this resort high enough.
Everything about this resort perfect, from our beautiful villa with private pool, a night spent cruising the backwaters on their houseboot, the gardens, the food, the service, all top class.

The infinity pool is exquisite, will definitely go back. The staff are amazing, best we have ever encountered.

The rooms are clean and well maintained and nothing was too much trouble for the staff

In particular we would like to commend Sreejith and Vaney Cario and their teams.

We stayed here for 5 nights over New Year and were really surprised at how lovely it was. We have a meandering pool villa which was lovely and very quiet. This pool was also quiet, however they really need to put sun-loungers around this area for room guests. The pool is idyllic but there is only about 20 loungers for all the rooms. The service at the pool is a joke, it is so slow and comes in stages, so you may get your chips and then your sandwich 50 minutes later. The standard of food is really good and they are fabulous at catering to allergies, nothing was too much bother. We also spent an extra night on the houseboat which was nice and the service was fantastic. as nice as it was, I am sure you could go out for the day and it would be just as nice. Staying overnight doesn't really bring anything extra. The NY dinner was overpriced and I do think resorts need to give guest another option over Xmas and NY as it is getting ridiculous what they are charging. I would return here though but not for NY!

This is a great place to see Cochin from or just relax. Knocks Marari into a cocked hat.

pool rooms are excellent (although better to have the wardrobe in the room not the open air bathroom). Excellent service levels. Super pool and fantastic views over the lake from everywhere. Perfectly adequate gym. Good sea-food restaurant.

just a few minor things the resort could address: the internet sign on process is a pain, and i would rather it was free and just embedded in the price; virtually none of their wine list was available.

Tips: ask for a large fresh smoothie at breakfast;

Room Tip: best on the south east corner...

We were on a tour to see India. Not s spa vacation. The setting was beautiful. We did not partake in the spa offerings. The meandering pool was very nice. Our room was air-conditioned, but the entire bathroom was outdoors. The service and food in the restaurants was fair. Spa vacation OK. Two day stop as part of a larger plan to see India, no.
