“Xmas Break”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

We have just been on second visit to the rixos sungate. This time for one week on 6th December, 3 boys aged 12, 9, 6. We visited in the summer and where impressed by the facilities of the hotel and numerous things to do, so decided it may be worth a visit over Xmas. We had initially booked two rooms but were upgraded to family suite, consisting of a separate bedroom and a large sitting area. Again like last time no complaints about the room very large and comfy.

One complaint we had was that even in the winter the rooms were quite warm, but the air con is set to not blow cool air over winter months. Cost saving, so i found it to warm at night to sleep.

We expected the alot of the facilities of the hotel to be not open but thought they may put on more of an effort with regards to entertainment for the small amount of guests that were there. The main buffet again was of good standard, and only two of the al carte restaurants were open. But because no other snack bars were open it got very boring. The hotel shud really let you have more access to the al a carte restaurant or include room service of the Xmas period. Towards the end of our stay they closed the main buffet hall and moved everyone into the restaurant and reduced the size of the buffet. we where glad this was toward the end as we would have been very disappointed.

To summarise I don't think its worth coming to this hotel in the Xmas as it can be a bit boring and the staff don't go out of their way to make the experience that great. This was my one main complaint in the summer. With less guests they could have focused on customer experience and made you felt special. However I would like to say thank you to Angelina on the guest relations desk who was always helpful and fantastic.

Save your money and come in the summer to get the best out of the hotel.

very good atmosphere, suitable for singles and families. Active personel, polite staffs. very good entertainment for whole day till night. clean rooms, clean swimming pools, many restaurants for each taste.
The only disadvantage of this hotel was the time for checking in. it took about five hours to make the room ready.

I loved this place very much with a few reservations.
Room was excellent, very nicely decorated, large and very comfortable.
The facility is almost excellent, very large set of pools, you never get bored. Well looked after.
The see is OK, there were 3 bays, and portside docks, I believe better option to enter into the sea than directly from the beach.
The night shows were excellent, professionals perform. The downside is finding a good place may be an issue and there is VIP concept that may annoy some. So if you want best place or some special treatment you have to pay extras. The standard is already very good but some may find this VIP concept odd --as I do, but I don't bother much, I don't understand why some people pay extra to isolate themselves from other people during holidays, for me it is a punishment :) --.
The meals are very good. Service is very good.
Just note that you have 1 reservation right for the a-la-carte restaurants, and use them, if you want extra you have to pay extra.
Bars are very good, they work like a beehive.
The drinks are not limited, you can drink high quality brands. I don't drink too much therefore dirinking good quality is more important for me :o)))), so 5 stars for drinks.
Animation team is OK, as expected. The water part was one of the most
I was surprised that tennis courts are free but you have to pay for he rackets and balls, This is very odd really, so bring your own rackets and balls if you want to play. I raised a complaint for this...
The Russians dominate here, good part is the ladies are always dressed like in a fashion show even during lunch time or at the beach, so you feel happy to see so nice ladies around. The downside is some are mostly men may lack manners, they may empty the open buffet big plates and even they don't eat all and chuck them out to trash, without thinking the others, kind of rude and selfish, they have way to go...
Overall if you think you deserve a premium holiday I think you will find what you seek here. Strongly recommended.

Room Tip: I don't know much how to pick a good room. My room was quite large and good, my friends rooms wa...

We stayed in Rixos Sundate from October 7-19. We booked a King Suite, and requested for a high floor. They gave us a room at the first floor, beside a smelly toilet and with a view of a tree. After my husband fought with the receptionist, we were finally given a King Suite at the 6th floor with full sea view, it has 2 huge verandas, one for sitting and one for sunbathing. It also has a jacuzzi with full sea view, and bedroom at the corner with floor to ceiling glass walls with view of the sea, pool and Taurus Mountains. It was just breath taking! But in the morning, we noticed that the AC is not working properly. It is colder outside than inside the room, so you cannot really stay in bed til late as it is like a sauna. We had to leave the veranda doors open all the time but still it doesnt cool down to a comfy temperature.

Though the hotel is saying that some of the restaurants and facilities will close in November, when we arrived on the 7th of Oct, Mermaid, Cactus and the buffet restaurant in the main building are already closed which was so disappointing. Also the main building is desserted, lights are turned off in many corners, the piano bar is always empty and Pino restaurant is closed, the whole place is depressing.

The guest services staff who are supposed to provide assistance are the most unfriendly staff in the whole resort. They cant see to be bothered. They are only friendly to Russian guests. When I approached one of them one time to ask about a show, she first sighed and she looked annoyed when she answered me in her very poor English.

The majority of the staff dont speak English and are sooo unfriendly except for a very few. I noticed that the staff there are working for 12 hours a day. The waitresses during lunch are waitresses in the ala carte restaurant in the evening. maybe that's the reason why most of them are so unfriendly because they are so unhappy.

During our stay we paid extra to dine in their ala carte restaurants like Olivia (Italian), Aegean (Greek/Turkish) and Bonzai (Sushi). You will have to pay $20 per person for Olivia and Aegean and $30 for Bonzai. We loved the food so much in Olivia (specifically the Beets and Squid Risotto) that we had dinner there 6x during our 12 nights stay. The Chef de Cuisine is just wonderful, she comes out everytime and greets all the guests and since she sees us everytime, we became friends, and she makes the risotto even more special when we order. If ever I will go back to Rixos, it will be because of Olivia. The Aegean's food was very tasty especially the Calamari and sea bass, we ate there 2x, the service was hit or miss. And in Bonzai, the $30 reservation fee is just a bit too much because you are already in an all-inclusive restaurant, I hope they will just make it $20 in all restaurants.

The buffet restaurants have some good food, but it becomes redundant. But since we dont eat dinner there, we were okay having lunch in one of the buffet restos or in the alara snack house.

In the Lotus Bar, sometimes service is a little bit slow, it is true that they prioritize those who tip them. So we occassionally tip them 10euro, most of the guests are so stingy, so that makes a big difference for them as they really work hard for not much money. Our favorite bartender is Ismail who is very friendly and made sure that we are sorted at the bar.

When we just arrived there were 2 rainy days and we got sooo bored. They cancelled all outdoor activities and entertainment and didnt provide any alternatives. Instead of cancelling the show in the alara area why dont you take it to one of your halls. Why dont you put a pianist in the piano bar? Or you can show more movies instead of just showing 2x a day. You need to keep your guests entertained regardless of the weather situation.

While we were there, we were able to watch a really nice dance show and circus. And the cocktail band was really nice. But the rest of the nights were lacklustre. The entertainment finished as well very early, 11pm in most nights and 12:30am in some which is so add for people on holiday who can definitely stay up longer! The Chaors Disco was most of the days empty and the music is quite redundant.

The animation team are actively teaching fitness classes, but the instructors are amateurish in their ways of teaching. One russian lady was teaching yoga with her eyes closed half of the time, and not providing alternative poses to beginners which is very important as you have participants with different fitness levels. Another russian lady was teaching kango jumps and trying to get the participants to spin jump which is very dangerous. I quite enjoyed the aqua aerobics though. And also I really enjoyed training in their gym as they are equipped with technogym, but they need to add more channels to their cardio TV.

Another thing, the hotel is hosting loads of conferences, they had 2 huges ones during our stay. The thing is they suddenly make everything crowded, restaurants, Lotus Bar and they are there in their business attire which doesnt fit at all to the resort setting and they are staring at the people in resort wear!

The housekeeping lady who is cleaning our room was the friendliest staff in the whole resort. She really took a good care of our room and of our requests.

Overall, I had a good time in the resort. I enjoyed the jacuzzi in our room and the risotto in Olivia. If I will go back there tough, I will go back probably during summer so everything is operational.

Room Tip: Spend extra for the King Suite room, it is totally worth it!
