Awesome location but the lodge is now a tired old lady that is crying for a refurb. Poor service in the restaurant where the waiters also seemed to be preparing the meals !? Peeling paint, salt grime in the luxury rooms and scuffed corridors throughout. One to be avoided until under new management.

Room Tip: Ask for a room far from the bar, drunken fisherman carousing each night can spoil the wilderness exp...

Thanks for a most enjoyable stay at your resort. The waterfront room was beautiful and so tranquil. The food was really good and the staff were so pleasant and welcoming. Had a lovely time and will certainly come there again.

We loved the location. Unfortunately we did not get a room with a view(much to our disappointment). Our accommodation was neat and lovely. We arrived on Friday and unfortunately the dirtbin had not been emptied and although tea was left for us, coffee was not provided- All of this was rectified the following day. Yes , I am going back again.

We had a very pleasant stay at the lodge. Staff were very friendly and helpful and this is a great place to relax in piece and quiet. Didn't get to fish but apparently it's really good. Was nice to go at such a quiet time.

I think all exceeded expectations especially reception on arrival. Service for lunch met but did not exceed. The locals in the bar on Saturday night made so much noise and shouting that other guests complained.

I am posting this notification highlighting the blatant dishonesty , lack of hospitality and appalling sanitary conditions my family and I experienced at the Breede River Lodge for the duration of our stay between the 05.01.2014 and 08.01.2014.

We were levied a rate of R2000 per night an eft of R6000 was paid in full on the 31/12/2013 into their bank account which was way before occupation.

Upon our arrival at the Breede River Lodge in Witsand on the 05 January 2014, we were informed that the resort converted our unit ;what was previously a conference facility into a ten sleeper apartment?

When checking into the unit we noticed that the electrical earth leakage switch kept on tripping, as soon as we turned on any electrical appliance being the kettle , television etc..., we immediately called the reception desk and informed them of the electrical fault.

The owner(maintenance manager) appeared shortly thereafter with a hair-dryer in his hand, advising that the wiring of the fridge could possibly be wet and proceeded to personally dry the affected areas with said appliance.

The attempt made by the owner clearly didn’t work and our electricity remained inactive for the remainder of that day ( day 1), with us having to call him continuously from our cell phones as the unit did not have a phone linked to the reception; throughout the day we kept asking him to resolve the matter. After several failed attempts by the owner who was also the "electrician/plumber/maintenance manager" a professional electrician was finally called out to assess the problem, he immediately informed us that the geyser element was faulty and that the owner is fully aware of this problem. The electrician thereafter disconnected the element which resolved the (tripping) electrical fault ; when we enquired with the owner if the unit had sufficient hot water stored by means of external solar penals, he assured us that the solar panels installed to the property stored sufficient energy to generate warm water for the entire family of 10 people for the duration of our 3day stay.

This clearly was not the case as we had absolutely no warm water to bath inn for the entire 3 days, coupled by the fact that temperatures dropped and the area experienced it's incremental weather conditions.
The second morning we informed the owner that there is NO hot water at the apartment , he informed us that he was unable to come and check and he sent through a representative named Henny to assess the situation. It was apparent that Henny had no knowledge as to the functionality of solar panels, a fact which he openly admitted. He informed us that there is only one electrician servicing the entire Witsand area and that he too was unable to come out to the unit.

There was a total lack of interest shown by the owner and representation.

We had six children in our group, ages ranging from 6yrs to 12yrs of age and I maintain that hot water is not an unreasonable requirement, considering the rate we paid as well as the fact that the Breede River Lodge has a "3 star" rating ?

Furthermore, the property was infested with cockroaches and insects; there was a constant damp, pungent stench in the unit which affected our children’s allergies to such an extent that they had difficulty breathing in the evenings. The final straw however, was when the roof started leaking on the second day of our stay due to the heavy rains. We were forced to put out containers and bath towels throughout the unit to catch the rainwater pouring through the thatch roof, too late did we realize that the loft was also leaking and that the children’s beds were wet….

After finally throwing our proverbial toys out of the cot on the 3rd time of living in unpleasant surroundings, the owner informed us that he would be refunding us a portion of the rate we paid prior to our departure (08/01/2014) from the lodge which is now 15 days ago. After following up with Johan (the owner) on the 10/01/2014 as to when he will be processing our refund as promised by himself, he went back on his word and advised that he has decided not to refund us any longer and that I should have my attorney contact his attorney which he had no details of?

It is apparent that the owners ( Johan) intentions were not sincere and honest and we strongly advise anyone contemplating staying at this establishment not to consider vacationing at this resort.

We are in the process of lodging a formal civil claim against the owner and have alerted the local municipality health department to inspect the resort as it is a health hazard.

We stayed for one night, hoping to get a feel for the place for future longer visits. The lodge is spectacularly well located up on a hillside overlooking the river mouth / estuary. Balconies open up to great views. The buildings are all well designed with the views in mind. The restaurant also shares these views. Restaurant serves good food at good prices and excellent service. I was hoping to have a kitesurf and rent a board from the activity centre there but this was not functional and there was nobody there despite, or maybe because of, a decent SE blowing. No problem, I'll bring my own equipment next time, but where the lodge really disappoints is in the basics - some maintenance was needed e.g. broken poles on the balcony railing that our daughters would have been able to fit through, random nails in the wall that look like there may have been some art there at one time or other, light bulbs missing, out of order notices on the heating, etc. The cleanliness was an issue: the patio table still had stains of the previous party on it and cutlery needed a second wash. Worst of all, one the downstairs beds had been peed in and the linen not changed. When I phoned reception, I was told offhandedly that housekeeping had gone home and he was not prepared to change the linen himself. He would see what he could do, he said, but he did nothing, so we visited him to expedite the delivery of clean linen which we then fitted ourselves. We then tried to sleep with both neighbour's TV's clearly audible through the thin walls. Not what you would expect for R1000/night. Witsand itself is great though and it would not take much for this lodge to up its game and be a great place to stay.
