“Wow!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

The lookout itself is just amazing, the views are breathtaking, so as the road heading up to Stegastein. Driving on this road is an adventure itself. At the lookout you will find perfect silence, and a nice view to the surrounding mountains, the Aurlandsfjord, Flam and Aurland itself.

Well worth the 10kms drive, it is a must see!

“A must do on route - great walkout lookout”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2012

This is a great lookout over the Hardangerfjord. They did a nice job building a sort of jetty on the mountain with glass at the end - so you can actually look down. Leave your vertigo at home as the lookout moves a bit.

One of the great futures is the toilet with a view - pick the last toilet in the building and you can enjoy a marvelous vista while relieving yourself.

The road further up mountain is also well worth the drive - My estimate is it will take you about 2-3 hours to drive up and back through the tunnel.

“Incredible views, but not for the faint of heart!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

We drove to Stegastein from Aurland on a lovely, misty Saturday, looking forward to seeing the fjords from above, but the road to get there was an adventure all by itself! The one-lane one switchbacks steeply up the mountain with blind corners and sheer precipices, and only the occasional turn-out to avoid oncoming vehicles. It really was fun in a taking-your-life-in-your-hands kind of way, but be prepared!

Once we finally made it to the top, we were rewarded with the feeling of being on top of the world. Even on a cloudy day we could see for miles and miles, and felt it was well worth the harrowing drive.

the fjord from the water is wonderful but to see it from above is beyond description; and the road to go to Stagastein is unbelievable

“Excellent fjord views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2012

The Stegastein viewpoint, located up the mountain between Flam and Aurland, gives you a spectacular view of the fjords and is well worth the one hour outting. If you don't have a car- and you really don't need one in the fjord region- you can easily book an outting to the Stegastein viewpoint through the tour office in Flam. The office is located in the same building as the Flam railway ticket office. You'll ride in a 10-12 person van up to the viewpoint, stay as long as you like, then ride back down. The road is narrow and windy...but you won't be the one driving on it! We came to Flam on the last Flamsbana of the day (leaving Oslo at 4:09pm), stayed overnight, and then on the next day the tour office booked us on the ferry from Flam to Gudvangen with a bus return to Flam followed by the van ride up to Stegastein viewpoint. Leaving Flam on the 11am ferry to Gudvangen, we were able to do all that before catching the afternoon express ferry to Balestrand at 3:30pm.
