“A fabulous welcome in a beautiful home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2011

We spent three glorious nights with friends at La Grange du Haou.

If you're looking for a beautiful place to stay within easy reach of Pau, the Bearn and the Pyrenees, then this lovely B&B is ideally located. Around 20 minutes from Pau airport, we were given a tremendous welcome by Michel and shown around the house and gardens which he and Nanou have very obviously loved for over 30 years.

The guest accommodation couldn't be more comfortable - a spacious bedroom and a stunning suite - and almost self-contained. Michel has taken over much of the cooking in recent years and judging by a wonderful meal and terrific breakfasts, this is something he really enjoys.

Trips along the Vallee d'Aspe into the Pyrenees, to Salies de Bearn, Sauveterre and Navarrenx were wonderful as was our visit on our last morning (at Michel's recommendation) to the Chateau de Momas - it's certainly far from a traditional 'stately house' guided tour!

For our first trip to the Bearn, Pau and this part of the Pyrenees, Michel and Nanou added something very special indeed. Merci mille fois.

Michel and Nanou Raulin are charming hosts with a gorgeous home tucked away about 15-20 min drive from Pau. We stayed for 4 nights in July (preferred 6 more but they had already booked out way back in February). Michel speaks English well and helped us a lot with our enquiries, he also phoned another B&B in the centre of France to book us in for a future date.

We stayed in The Suite - so so beautiful with views out each window onto lush pasture with gorgeous horses munching away....bliss. The church bell nearby is my new favourite sound - I wish I had recorded it.

Breakfast is very generous that changes slightly each day and a lot is homemade - bread, jams, yoghurt, meat, cheese, sweet cake and even creme caramel (a first for breakfast for us!!) All delicious.

There's nothing we liked the least (perhaps we gutsed out on brekkie too much and had more of the Pyrenees to climb on our bikes to work all the calories off :) :)

Stay there - you won't be disappointed.

Our stay at La Grange du Haou was terrific. Michel and Nanou Raulin are terrific hosts. They both radiate French charm and graciousness. Plus they are both wonderful pastry chiefs. Each morning we were surprised with a new delectable pastry as the centerpiece of our breakfast that also included homemade jams, cheeses, and excellent breads from two different bakeries in different nearby towns. The setting a few miles north of Pau was relaxing with great views of the surrounding country. We loved being in the in quiet French country side while only a short drive to nearby villages or to Pau. Our room was very large with excellent facilities including a wonderful bed, bathroom, and sitting area. Our days were filled with two trips to the Parc National des Pyrenees (hiking both days), a day of horseback riding in the foothills of the Pyrenees, and numerous visits to Pau and the surrounding villages and sights. We had a wonderful stay. Jim and Pam

We chose this place as I have a friend nearby I came to visit. We spent 8 nights here and loved it. It is off the beaten path in gorgeous countryside with great biking and hiking. It is surrounded by horse pastures and very quiet. There are some good restaurants in the area and some nice day trips to take. The B&B is immaculate and beautifully decorated and we had a delicious meal there one night. The breakfasts were works of art and delicious and special with a view out a huge window. We highly recommend this for a quiet, laid back get away. It is about 1 hour north of Pau if you need more activity or an interesting day trip to see the castle and buy chocolates!
