“A break on our honeymoon trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

Together with my wife we decided to make a stop in the historical city of Verneuil sur Avre, where a major battle took place during the 100 years war. A friend had recommended us the Hostellerie Le Clos and we greatly enjoyed our two nights there. The staff is very welcoming and creates an atmosphere of familiarity. The king-size beds are extremly comfortable and a lovely french breakfast was served to our room. Our dinner was a gastronomic experience worth mentioning. The food was delicious. So all in all we can truly recommend Hostellerie Le Clos for a week-end among lovers.

Verneuil-sur-Avre is a perfectly delightful and charming town and Le Clos is the place to stay while visiting there. The service of the hotel is excellent and the food sublime. We were there in off moment and the owners did everything they could do to amuse and serve us. Delightful gardens. Wonderful place to stay

We got off to a bad start as soon as we got out of our car after an 8 hour journey, as the manager said that we had had only reserved for two people when we are a family of five. Clearly this was not the case and I showed him the correspondence we had had in which I had clearly stated the names and ages of the whole family. Rather than being apologetic he insisted on trying to sell us an additional suite at full rate. As it turned out all five of us could easily be accommodated in the original suite so we had no idea why he had made such a big deal of it. Dinner was very formal in the true French tradition. The dining room is beautiful but we didn't think the food matched the surroundings nor the very high prices. They were trying too hard. The hotel is also situated right next to the busy ring road, which of course you can't see in any of the pictures! All in all not a great experience.

We had a very disagreeable experience with the manager of this hotel. Although we never made a dinner reservation we were yelled at, abused verbally, and demeaned in front of many hotel guests when we returned from an evening of sightseeing. Since we never made a reservation we never showed up for dinner. Instead of continuing a fight with the manager I paid for a dinner ($175US) that we never ate. We cannot recommend this hotel.

My husband and I stayed at the hotel with our 6 month old son at both the start and end of our holiday down the coast to break the car journey from Calais.

From the minute we arrived, we were extended great hospitality and thoughtfulness. For example - there was concern from the owners that the conservatory room we had originally booked on the night of our outward journey might not be warm enough for our son so we were moved to a suite in the main building. When we returned at the end of the week, we were warmly welcomed and found a hand written card in our room which was a lovely touch.

Dinner in the restaurant was fantastic (and within range of the baby monitor!). Having breakfast served in our room made the morning a much more relaxed affair and we left with a smile! An excellent hotel.

As new parents of a five month old we decided to break our journey from the South of France back to Calais with an overnight stay in a hotel. We were restricted by our search somewhat as we were using a blackberry and could only partially read/see the information! We ended up choosing the Hostelerie Le Clos and we really feel we lucked out!
We arrived slightly frazzled and our first impression was wonderful. Eric and one of his team were straight out to our car to greet us and help us with our bags. On seeing the baby Eric immediately changed our room as our request for a travel cot had not made it to them (the limitations of the blackberry evident!). He said that this was no problem and arrived within 5 mins in our room and set the cot up. Our room was gorgeous and so quaint. Eric insisted we join them for dinner which turned out to be included in our room rate (news to us-blackberry again!!)
Eric told us there was no problem bringing our baby to dinner who remained sleeping for the first two courses of our fine dining experience. Eric and his team told us there was no problem having the baby awake in the dining room but we felt it unfair to the other diners so took turns to eat our remaining courses –all wonderfully tasty- while the other walked the baby around the reception area. We eventually admitted defeat by desert and asked that it be taken in our room –which again was no problem.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and have vowed to return soon!

We said we had often paid more and been disappointed..the service at this hotel surpasses all our expectations!

This place is fantastic. We planned it as a place to break a journey, and it was perfect. Due to problems with the ferry we arrived very late, but they kept our table, took our bags and gave us an extremely warm welcome, even though I looked like a tramp. The food at the restaurant is phenomenal : we had a salad with a savoury sorbet that is the most delicious thing I can ever remember eating. The room was stylish without being chintzy, and they served us a great breakfast in it. It felt expensive, especially with the weak pound, but it was definitely worth it. If you feel like pushing the boat out, you will not be disappointed.
