“Very nice place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

we recently stayed here with our two and a half year old and 5 month old. Our two and a half year old loved the place, he spent his time running around the garden after the peacocks, hens, dog, checking out the fish in the fish pond. The place is so quiet and safe. The owner, Reiner is around alot as he lives in the same complex and spends his time tending to his gardens and looking after his animals. We didnt get to taste his food as I felt he is probably more comfortable with German visitors rather than our group of Irish/Australian.

For native English speakers - this place is kind of magical. It's a farmstead about 20 minutes drive from Siena. It has a number of one, two and three bedroom apartments that are simply furnished, but very clean and comfortable, with bathrooms that have decent showers.

What makes it so great? It's a fantastic example of just how little is needed to have a wonderful time. It helps that's there's a big open space invites kids of all ages just to hang out together, kick a ball around, play on the trampoline, play badminton or (in the communal dining area) play table tennis. But the real star of the place is the river - three minutes walk down a path through a field, the path lined with lime trees, you come to a shaw of woodland, beyond which is an almost biblical azure green, clean, freshwater river. It's quite possible to spend the whole day here, lazily swimming, building rockpools or wandering around.

Siena is an easy reach, less crowded than Florance, and was a hit with the kids. It doesn't take much investigation to find a lot more of interest besides dotted around the Italian countryside. Finally, the host Reiner cooks four times a week, and the meals are both tasty and good value.

A few points to note:

1. Take crocs or other waterproof sandles for the river - the river bed can be slippery and hard on bare feet. Simple flip-flops aren't likely to be enough.

2. If you've very small kids:
a) the kitchenettes don't have microwaves. Hot water is available from the coffee machine in the communal dining room.
b) chickens and peacocks roam free, and can leave droppings on the hard paved areas.

3. The sockets are old school Italian vertical three pin. Adapters to German style two pin are available, but they convert the two pin to a vertical orientation, so your plug sits on its side. That's fine for most things, but liquid electric mosquito deterrants won't work.

4. The nearest town likely to feature in a satnav is Rosia, from which Stigliano is signposted (coming from Siena it's on your left about two thirds of the way through the town - pass a Fiat repair shop on the left and you've gone too far); from Stigliano, Podere Campalfi is a pretty easy to find (locally posted signs point the way).

5. Though I understand this was unusual, every other family staying during our two week stay was German. On the nights Reiner cooks, all are seated at the same long table. Everyone we spoke to was very friendly and had really good English, but there might be something of a cultural gap not every Brit would welcome.

6. Finally, Tula, the pet dog, is unbelievably patient and very kid friendly. However, other dogs were staying with families while we were there. If you're not really a "dog person", it might be worth either checking with Reiner whether dogs are expected, or thinking carefully about whether it's the right place for you.

Overall we had a great time and I'd happily recommend to other families.
