“Relaxing Getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

We stayed in a log room for one night. As other reviews have noted, the rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. The wi-fi is spotty depending on where you are on the property. Overall, the Markland is a great value in a quiet and peaceful location by a private beach. It's a beautiful place to relax or stay as a base if you want to explore the Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

One caveat if you visit in the summer. There are 3 log rooms in a cabin "building," so each of the log rooms only have one window in the back of the room. Because that only window is in the bathroom, the cabin was hot and stuffy due to lack of air and cross breeze. In the front of the cabin, there are two doors. One of the doors swing open about 45 degrees so only limited air gets in. The screen also doesn't fit properly so mosquitoes get in. The other door opens completely but has no screen, so if you leave it open then mosquitoes get in. Some log rooms appear to have air conditioners but some do not. Our unit had an air conditioner but there was no cold air. If you're visiting in the summer and the forecast calls for hot weather, the log room may not be the best option.

We stayed in a log room, number 15. Very clean, screened door. Free laundry..well free if you have our own laundry detergent , which I did. Only 1 washer and 1 dryer. The Markland restaurant is very nice but only offers 4 entrees, all over $20 each .
Dinner at Neil's Chowder House in Neils Harbour..lobster dinner with crab& corn chowder. Delicious and only 15.99
I loved the Markland. The outside of the buildings are a bit worn and weathered but our room #15, was immaculate and had a very comfy kind bed. This was the most comfy bed so far while on our trip. Best night sleep as well! The bathroom had what looked like brand new shower /tub combo. If it wasn't new, it was a great testimonial to how well they clean.
I would stay again here in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: Be sure to hike the Whites Point trail, just south in Whites Point, located behind the Two Tittles...

Beautiful picturesque views & amazing private beach. Cabins are very clean and has very comfortable beds and was serviced to have beds made and towels changed daily but we wished there were TV's because the wifi wasn't good... & if they had had a propane bbq it would have been more convenient as it took about an hour to cook on the electric bbq. We did not eat in the restaurant but we did get massages from an RMT which was very relaxing. We would definitely recommend a stay but bring a bug deterrent because the Mosquitos & horseflies were quite the nuisance. Pros & cons but would still give thumbs up.

We stayed at the Markland for 3 nights in a cabin. The pros are the cabins are clean and you have a nice amount of space, plus a small kitchen and eating area. The onsite restaurant was very good. The Seafood Chowder is excellent. The cons are the door on our cabin (4) didnt open/close properly and was a major nuisance in my opinion. One of the window screens had been duct taped in a failed attempt to make it work. The wifi did not work in the cabin. It did work in the lobby area but it was spotty in it at times. There are no phones in the cabins so if you have an emergency good luck. There was no air conditioning in our cabin. It does get warm there at times, so if you get one of those days you are going to sweat. The place has potential but needs some work still.

My boyfriend and I recently spent 2 nights at the Markland Cottages. Upon reserving the one-bedroom cottage, I was informed we would be in cottage 7 as it was located in a nicer area of the property. When we got to the resort, we were in cottage 1, which was a bit of a disappointment, as the cottage offered no view of the water or property whatsoever. The cottage itself was very nice. The rooms were a fair size and the bed was extremely comfortable. With a little TLC, these cottages could be a whole lot better. The deck was quite large; however, you have to bring your own chairs if you want to sit out on it. They do provide a bbq (electric) which was very slow and was full of cigarette butts. I spoke to someone at the front desk regarding this and we received a new clean bbq within 5 minutes. The continental breakfast was decent, muffins, scones, fruit, etc. Cannot comment on the restaurant as I did not eat there. The grounds are beautiful. A short walk will take you to a private beach. Would consider returning in the future.

Room Tip: Request a cottage with an ocean view.

Having had traveled the Cabot trail, we found the Markland literally at the end of the road. Location is amazing and the chairs overlooking the ocean provided an unobstructed and serene space. Cabins were clean, bed comfortable. Cabins do need some TLC. Water pressure in shower was non-existent, windows screens in need of repair or totally missing in some windows. Outside chairs for the small deck would have been nice. Continental breakfast was nice and coffee pretty good. Was able to have dinner one night which was excellent but for the second night, we could not be accommodated due to a family reunion overtaking the dining room. Disappointing. All staff very friendly and helpful. In spite of disappointments, I would recommend to others given that the plus' are greater than the minus' and the location is great for exploring the area.

Explored the northern tip and discovered lovely beaches and craggy coves. If you can, don't miss Meat Cove. Worth the visit and the tricky drive! Beautiful spot for a walk, picnic, bird watching and nap on the beach.

The setting is gorgeous; a short walk through a lawn takes you to a beautiful private ocean beach, where you can walk, swim, lie in the sand, or sit in the two Adirondack chairs. You can see the large expanse of Aspe Bay, with the hills to the north and White Point peninsula to the south.

Dinners are fantastic, with excellent seasonings and locally sourced ingredients. We enjoyed appetizers of carrot-ginger soup, salad with local lettuce and cheese, and mussels harvested that day. The main courses of trout, halibut, and chicken included seasonal vegetables like asparagus, sugar snap peas, and new potatoes. There's also a good wine list and tempting desserts.

My partner and I stayed in a log room and her sister and 14-year-old daughter stayed in another one next door. These are rustic constructions that have been recently upgraded with new comfortable beds and sofas, great linens, and new bathroom fixtures. Very clean and pleasant.

There is an excellent masseuse on site and three of us indulged and became extremely relaxed.

Kim, the manager, was very friendly and helpful. After two nights, we were sorry to leave and plan to come back soon.
