My wife and I knew for over a year that we were going to go to Ti Kaye for our 10th anniversary, and we hoped that everything lived up to the hype. We are happy to say that it did. Our stay from May 25-30 was excellent.
Airport Pickup: Our Delta flight was a little late getting in, but it only took us about 30 minutes for landing to the time we left with our luggage. The Ti Kaye driver was waiting for us just where he said he would be. He took our luggage to the van, passed out water, and we were on our way. Everything you have read about the roads is true. They are very curvy, and we had to stop so that another guy in our van could get sick on the side of the road. After about 90 minutes we arrived at the famed Ti Kaye road, and it was everything we had read about. Bumpy and jarring, but I think someone prone to motion sickness would get sick on the main roads before the Ti Kaye road.
Check-In: We were met promptly by the Ti Kaye staff, who ushered us straight to the bar for our welcome drinks. Pilgrim was there and went out of his way to make a special drink for the guy who got sick, which made he feel better. The whole check in process was very smooth, and when we were ready to head to our cottage, we were escorted there and shown everything we needed to know.
Cottage: We were in cottage M (Mele), which is the one we would have picked if we could have reserved a specific cottage in advance. So we were very excited when we found out we were put in this cottage. The person showing us the cottage said he felt it was the best cottage in the whole resort, and it was everything we expected it to be. The view was superb, and the plunge pool was awesome. The water temperature in the pool was perfect, and was warmer than the ocean. We spent every afternoon in our plunge pool. The only slight complaint I have is that the mattresses on the bed could be a little more comfortable.
Beach: Everyone knows about the stairs, and if you have done your research then you have no right to complain about them. We knew we would need to go up and down the stairs, and had no issues with it. The beach itself was wonderful in the morning. Very quiet and serene. We spent a lot of time lying on the beach with our bucket of Piton beer. Good stuff that beer, and goes down so easy.
If you want to snorkel off the beach, then go to the right side of the cove because there is much more over there. We saw lots of fish and even a sea turtle.
We also did some kayaking, and if you are up for an adventure, there are some private beaches to be found about 15-20 minutes south of Ti Kaye.
Once the afternoon comes around, the boats start to pull in. If it is cruise ship day as Wednesday and Thursday were during our stay then the beach gets very crowded. At one time we counted six catamarans in the cove at one time. This did not bother us as we just moved from the beach to our private plunge pool in the afternoons.
Food: We had no complaints about the food at all. Breakfast was great each morning, and I ordered an omelet each morning. There are also other hot and cold choices to choose from as well. All our lunches were down at the beach restaurant where we had sandwiches with the local chips which were great,
Dinner each night was wonderful. One thing I liked about the service was that it was very laid back. I never felt like we were being rushed. Some might take it as slow service, but I felt my food was getting time to digest between courses. So many times in the States, your main course comes up very soon after the appetizer, and I liked eating at a relaxed pace. I would definitely recommend the Voodoo Chocolate for dessert.
Wednesday night was the manager's cocktail party from 6:30 to 7:30 followed by the buffet dinner. It was pretty much open bar with all you could drink wine and rum punch as well as finger foods. This was a good chance to meet and talk with other guests. We ended up eating dinner that night with another couple we had just met (Hi Tina and Mike) and had a great time. The buffet itself was great followed by the fun dancing afterword to the local band where all the staff joined in. We ended up closing down the bar that night with some other couples, and only left when they turned out the lights on us.
Tours: We did two tours with Serenity Tours. A private land and sea tour and the zip line tour.
While expensive, the private land and sea tour was the highlight of our trip. John and Sherma picked us up promptly at 9am. We knew immediately that we were among friends, and we all hit it off from the start. We started off with a stop at Plas Kasav to see how the bread was made, and then headed in Canaries where I had the chance to mangle the Creole language by trying to order two loafs of bread with butter. The fresh bread was delicious.
We then proceeded deep into the rainforest where John took us to a very private waterfall. He gave us all the time we wanted to swim and enjoy ourselves. After that we headed to the volcano where we had our own private tour, which was pretty cool.
Lunch was at the very good Beacon restaurant overlooking the Pitons. We could not have asked for a better view or food. John and Sherma joined us, and we all had a good time.
Next the sea portion began, and we made two snorkel stops as well as the stops at the bat cave and the tunnel of love. I would definitely recommend snorkeling at Anse Chastanet, as there were lots of fish that were quite different than what we saw at Ti Kaye.
We then got off in Rodney Bay where John and Sherma took us all over the northern part of the island. It is amazing how much more developed this part of the island is compared to the south. It is almost a different world up there. We also got to meet John and Sherma’s family, and everyone was very nice.
After a very rewarding day where we felt we got to know the culture and people of the island, we returned to Ti Kaye exhausted at 6pm.
The next day John personally picked us up for our zip line tour. It was about an hour drive, and he got us there between the cruise ship crowds. This meant that it was just my wife and me at each tower. We were finished in no time, and it was a blast. There were 7 towers in all, but John said they would have about 13 before the end of summer. After a snack of some awesome Creole bread, John drove us through Dennery before dropping us back at Ti Kaye at 12:30.
I cannot recommend Serenity enough. They really took care of us from start to finish and we truly felt like we were part of the family by the time we left. Tell them Matt and Karen said “Hi”, and be sure to ask Sherma how much she likes pork. :)
Bugs: I think I got bit no more than three times the whole trip., and I think those bites happened the night we went down to the beach about dusk. The first couple nights I put repellant on my ankles, but after that I figured I did not need it for dinner.
Weather: We had some showers one morning, but they cleared out pretty quickly. Every now and then we would get an afternoon shower, but the rain was gone pretty quickly. Even after the rain it was never humid because there was always a nice breeze blowing to cool things down.
Resort Overall: The place is just quiet and beautiful. I really have no complaints. Katie, the manager, went out of her way to talk to everyone each night and seemed genuinely happy to talk to everyone. She never came across as just going through the motions.
They are currently in the process of building the spa which will have a jacuzzi overlooking the ocean as well as massage rooms, and some other amenities. They are also going to be putting in a tennis court before the end of the year as well. Apparently Katie and the chef are big tennis players.
As has been mentioned in previous posts, this is not a resort for a couple that wants to party the night away. Once again, if you’ve done your homework, you know this going in and have no reason to be disappointed. With the exception of the Wednesday night cocktail party everyone pretty much went back to their cottage after dinner. This is place to come and relax, which is exactly what my wife and I wanted to do.
