“Pleasant stopover”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2012

We stayed for one night while passing through on a tour of the region. The staff we met were very friendly and relaxed. There's free parking to the rear. The hotel is a little bit tired, but it was reasonably priced. One the first floor we found the free wi-fi signal a bit weak, but it worked. And the room, while simple, provided everything we needed for a short stay.

Room Tip: On the main square so a good choice for a very short walk to bars, cafes and restaurants.

We arrived at this hotel tired after a long day of driving, and were immediately welcomed into the charm of this small, country-style hotel. A quick shower, a stroll round the beautiful village in the moonlight and back to the hotel for a typically French 3 course dinner, and then to our simple, comfy room for a sound night's sleep. The hotel is quaint, friendly and very comfortable and the village is a treasure. We climbed to the Chapelle du Roc the next morning, returning in time to enjoy the Saturday market in the sunny square, before continuing on our way. If you're anywhere near Castellane and want to experience local hospitality and sample the charm of small-town France, this is where you'll find it.

I've just read a couple of the lower ratings reviews and must say that we stayed here for three nights and didn't have any bad experiences. Our front bedroom on the first floor looked directly out onto the town square, which was suprisingly quiet at night. It was a comfortable room, slightly faded in the fashion of a lot of the older hotels, but comfy and clean. The breakfasts were typical French, croissant, bread and coffeee, and above average for quality. We did not eat in the restaurant, as there were plenty around the square to try, so we can't comment on the food other than breakfast. The staff were uniformly pleasent, and helpful - when the receptionist spotted my netbook she set up the Wiffy (WiFi) for me immediately. Even a fairly noisy wedding party on the Saturday night was not enough to cause concerns. All in all, good value

Dear ’Ma Petite Auberge’.

We were staying at your hotel the night between the 30th and 31st of October among 11 other Danish people and we all had a ½ pension included. Everything was excellent and we all enjoyed our stay. We had en excellent diner and breakfast and appreciated your hospitality and kindness.
So from all of us – thank you so much!

The Danish group and Rohmann

When my wife and I got to Castellane, this hotel was already "complete", but after our terrble dinner experience in their restaurant, we felt lucky that we didn't spend the night there.

Just like the previous reviewer from Kent, we were told by a man, who turned out to be our waiter (but most likely, the proprietor himself), that the better tables were "reserved", and were designated to sit at a table right by the opening to the hall way. When this "waiter" took our order, he used his accusing finger to point at us and said curtly, "What do you want?" What was fortunately with us was, that we didn't wait too long for our food. But, he served my wife's dish to me, and vice versa. Later we also noticed the same scenario happened at a neighboring table. After we paid our bill and were walking out of the dining hall, the waiter was walkng right behind us, taking dishes into the kitchen. He didn't say any "Thank you", or "Goodbye", or their French equivalent. He just followed us out, as keeping his watchful eyes on unwelcome intruders.

This surprised us because, previously, we have had good experiences with the waiters in France. And in all the other countries we have been too, we never met his equal. It really dismayed us that all this had to happen in France, the elegant France.

It was our last night in Castellane and six of us had a meal at Ma Petite Auberge. Although there were tables available in the main dining room, they insisted on putting us in the annexe which had no charm whatsover.

We ordered from the 4-course set menu. It took 2 and a half hours to serve us the first 2 courses. Both of which arrived cold - I had to send my main course back to be warmed up. They also came out with a fish main course which no-one had ordered. When we pointed this out, they insisted they were right as they had written it on our order. No "So sorry we will get it changed for you". The food was very disappointing in quality - just all pureed on the plate and my daughters (who had lamb chops) could eat their meals in five minutes!

We asked for the cheese course to arrive the same time as our desserts (in order to speed things up as we were on a time); to this the service was completely non-existent as neither course arrived. Exasperated we asked them to make up our bill just for what we had eaten and drank. They would not and insisted we paid the full price. Things became heated and they threatened to call the Gendarmerie if we did not pay the full bill. We felt we had no choice but to pay as we were struggling with the language barrier.

Maybe we were unlucky and just caught them on a bad evening. Just beware if you decide to eat here. We noticed other French diners were also made to wait and one couple left their meal unfinished.

We stayed only one night in this hotel.
We forgot our passports and other papers in the last hotel; the lady of this hotel did every thing to help us. Most important is that the guests feels comfortabel. The hotel rooms are original. Lovely.
When we are going to France again we want to stay in this hotel again. BenCo from Holland.
