“Interesting history, great guide”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2010

My wife, son and I visited Austria and the Czech Republic this summer. We had a rental car and took a side trip to Krivoklat castle, which is about an hour from Prague down windy, country roads. When we got in we waited in the courtyard for the English language tour. A 50-ish women dressed in medieval costume put on a bird show with hawks and falcons that wasn't bad.

Our tour guide was great. He was also dressed in medieval costume and said that this was his weekend gig, during the week he sells advertising in Prague. After the tour we spent about ten minutes talking to him about living there.

Turns out that his dad and I were on opposite sides of the iron curatin while doing our military service. I asked him to pass the message on to his dad that I'm glad we never had to fight each other!

The castle was the home of the Von Furstenberg family for many years and is well preserved. It is also worth the drive to see the countryside.

“Good for an hour or so”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2010

Stopped here on my way out of Prague driving to Germany. If you're using precious vacation time from Prague for this, skip it. But if you're in the area and looking for something to do, then it's okay. It's pretty cool looking from the outside...really old, built in the 13th century apparently. Inside there's a large courtyard with several activities going on. Folks dressed in medieval garb letting kids shoot bows and arrows, another making coins. Kind of like a medieval festival. It's all free too. They have a tour you could pay for but it was in Czech. Parking is thankfully not below the castle, so you just have to walk a relative flat path for about 200 meters. The cost of parking was 50 czk.

“Surprised by the interieur, in a pleasant way”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2010

This castle is not so impressive on the ousite, but the interior was wauw! The children where very fond of the torturetools and cannons. I was also fond of the amazing library, one of the largest of the Czech Republic and from unknown beauty. To recommenda visit!

“Visit Krivoklat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2005

Take the train to Krivoklat to see the castle. Leave from the Smichov station headed for Beroun. You must change trains in Beroun and get on the train to Rakovnik. It is a nice 45 minute ride from there to the Krivoklat station. It is very nice and non-commercialized. We went in May 2005, and there were only two other tourists on the tour. Admission for an adult was 80 Kc. Tours are in Czech with other language handouts provided. The castle is lovely, and there are many things to see inside such as a small collection of sleighs and sleds. You also get to see the dungeon which includes a rack and an iron maiden.
