“Top hotel for ski holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

This is a beautiful hotel with fantastic amenities for a very relaxing break. We stayed here with friends and family for a wonderful week of skiing.
I just want to add a big thank you to Chris and the staff for making our holiday such a pleasurable experience.

We stayed for a week to ski in the GrossGlockner resort with our sons. This hotel exceeded our expectations in many ways. Very friendly hosts and staff, superb wellness facilities and excellent food. Rooms are very nice and spacious and very well maintained. It is very nicely situated at the foot of the GrossGlockner, the highest mountain of Austria. Do not expect crazy apres ski after skiing but do enjoy wonderful selfmade pastry and tea when you come back from the slope. And then a serene wellness session to revitalize. There is a nice swimming pool so younger kids enjoy themselves too. The ski area in itself isn't the best in the Alps but the hotel makes up a lot for that.

Room Tip: There are new design-style rooms, very nicely done! We had a family room, a bit more traditional but...

My husband and I with two teenagers 14 and 17 all had a great time at this hotel so much so that both girls said it was like staying with friends. The food was great, situation amazing, and there was lots to do. We went ski-ing and took part in two walks organized by the hotel, one snow shoe and the other a nature walk where we saw amazing animals and learnt a lot about the area. It was lovely relaxing in the pool in the evenings or the sauna or the outside jaquzzi. Nothing was too much trouble for the delightful family who run the hotel.

The Tauerwirt was a wonderful base for our hiking vacation. The food and service there were exceptionally good (more below), and the peaceful setting on the doorstep of the Hohe Tauern National Park (literally, no more than a 2- or 3-minute walk from the Dorfertal Valley trailhead) made for an ideal starting point for day hikes in several directions.

Part of what we liked so much about this family-run hotel was its relaxed style. Programs (e.g., talks about the area, movies about Austria, wine tasting featuring regional wines, etc.) were offered almost every night, and the inn organized day hikes for anyone interested -- but, there was never an expectation that we "must" participate; everyone was welcome, but "attendance" wasn't taken.

We also appreciated the top-notch service. Christoph (who usually managed the front desk) was incredibly helpful in suggesting day hiking ideas, printing out trail maps for us, and telling us about the history and sociology of the local community. He and his three older siblings all help their mother run the inn (the father died a few years ago), which has been in the family for three generations.

The food at the Tauerwirt was great. Breakfasts included at least four different kinds of homemade yogurts, wonderfully fresh whole grain breads, lots of regional cheeses, fresh fruit, etc. Dinners included either two or three entree choices (including a vegetarian option). Each was artistically presented and featured locally grown produce, locally caught fish, and other local products. An afternoon "snack" was available, too.

Our room was also very nice -- spacious bed, plenty of storage space, nice bathroom, great view from our small balcony, etc.

This part of the Tirol (a valley at the foot of the western side of the Grossglockner, Austria's highest peak) is a bit off-the-beaten path, which, to our minds, only added to its appeal. It's a very peaceful area, with hiking trails going up numerous side valleys past waterfalls and rivers to nearby huts. There's also a cable car that operates seasonally (we were there in the last few days of September, and it was still running)) from Kals/Grossdorf up to the Kals-Matreier-Torl, a 2200 m summit that's a great starting point for alpine hiking (including the Panoramaweg trail that, unfortunately, was closed when we went up there after an early season snowfall the night before).

We highly recommend Kals am Grossglockner as a base for a hiking vacation -- and if you go there, we strongly recommend that you stay with the Rogl Family at the wonderful Vital-und Wanderhotel Tauerwirt!
